We called to book online, and the operator told us to just proceed as walk-in. When we arrived at reception, we were suddenly told there were no rooms available.

 

We complained because of the wasted time and false expectation after specifically calling ahead. They then suggested another hotel beside Solaire. While we were already there at Seda, the manager from the first hotel suddenly called saying that, apparently, a room was actually available after all.

 

At that point, I got irritated and raised my concern to the manager directly. It honestly made me wonder if this was some kind of strategy between the two hotels.

 

Now they’re offering free upgrades and free early check-in and late check-out. The experience already ruined the trust for me. 

My star is ⭐️.

This is my first bad experience after my fourth time staying at the hotel.

Flying In

The first hour in Manila is the first impression of the city, and Solaire has engineered it.

Most international carriers from Europe, the Middle East, and North America land at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 — the older international building, where the Filipino-passport queue moves briskly and the foreign queue asks for twenty to forty minutes of your evening. Beyond baggage claim, the Solaire driver waits with a placard bearing your name in Roman characters. The meet-and-greet is arranged at booking; Korean-, Mandarin-, or Japanese-speaking drivers are dispatched on request.

The car is, almost always, a Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series. The climate is set; the water is cold; the morning broadsheet is folded in the rear console. The route is the NAIA Expressway south — elevated, swift, Manila Bay's reclamation district unfolding on the right like a long architectural model under construction. Twelve minutes, port-to-porte-cochère.

Guests arriving at Terminal 3 — Singapore Airlines, ANA, JAL, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Korean Air, Asiana, the bulk of Asian directs — face a slightly longer drive of fifteen to twenty minutes. Those landing at Clark International Airport, eighty kilometres north, transfer in ninety minutes to two hours via NLEX-SCTEX.

The approach onto Aseana Avenue gives the first glimpse of Entertainment City, the master-planned district occupying what was, two decades ago, open water. The Solaire silhouette rises bay-side, two towers distinct against the late sky. A fifty-metre approach drive leads to the porte-cochère: doorman in tailcoat, valet stand staffed, the lobby's glass doors waiting at the end of it.

The Multilingual Welcome

That the front desk operates in six languages is not incidental.

Solaire's staff — at front desk, concierge, gaming floor, and Sky Tower butler service — handle Korean (a meaningful share of the foreign clientele), Mandarin and Cantonese, Japanese, and the Bahasa lineage of Indonesian and Malaysian with workable fluency. Sky Tower restaurants carry Korean-language menus; the Korean expatriate concierge team coordinates food deliveries, tour-operator referrals, and translation across retail, medical, and service interactions. For Chinese guests, the Mandarin concierge handles the equivalent. For Singaporean, Malaysian, and Japanese guests, the English is fluent and the specialist coverage functional. The cumulative effect, for the foreign guest unfamiliar with Manila, is the engineered absence of friction.

At Solaire

The glass doors part. The air is cool, oxygen-rich, scented faintly of citrus and polished leather. Your shoes meet marble. The lobby opens directly onto a window wall facing Manila Bay, and at six o'clock the West Philippine Sea sunset pours through it, gold and salt-bright.

To the right, the gaming floor. The low electronic thrum of slot machines beneath the higher clack of clay-composite chips on felt, the percussion of dealers calling card and no more bets, the soft chime of a payout three rows over. The carpet absorbs the light; there are no windows, and there is no clock. Cocktail servers move through in matched black; the bronze rail catches the chandelier.

To the left, the dining and entertainment corridor. Past Finestra — modern Italian by Chef Josh Boutwood — the air shifts. Yakumi's grilled-yakitori smoke, layered with citrus and ginger. Red Lantern's Cantonese-Sichuan: fermented bean, smoke, garlic. Strip Steakhouse's binchotan. Four cuisines reach your nose before the corridor ends.

Straight ahead, past the weekly floral arrangement, the entrance to the 1,800-seat Solaire Theatre. Hotel registration splits two ways: Bay Tower at the main desk, Sky Tower at its own — separate entrance, separate elevator bank. Once Sky Tower guests step through, you do not see them again.

The Hotel — Bay Tower and Sky Tower

The Bay Tower holds approximately five hundred rooms in the original 2013 building, in categories rising from Deluxe through Premier Suite. The bay-view rooms command the property's signature shot — the sunset behind floor-to-ceiling glass, the carpet thick beneath bare feet, the linens Egyptian-cotton weighty.

The Sky Tower adds three hundred rooms in a higher register: larger footprints, dedicated check-in, a private elevator. The Sky Tower lobby smells different — the property's scent design recalibrated for the ultra-luxury tier (an Aman, a Bulgari, a Mandarin Oriental reference). First-time guests typically book the Bay Tower Premier; repeat guests return to the Sky Tower.

The Gaming Floor

Hundreds of table games — baccarat dominant among the Asian clientele, with blackjack, roulette, sic bo, poker, and Texas hold'em. Chips are clay-composite, weighted in the hand, which is why the click-clack across the floor carries that specific percussion. Dealers read black tie, white gloves, and the unflinching composure that distinguishes Solaire's floor culture from its neighbours.
