Back To The 70's

Does anybody remember typhoon Yoling? As I recall, the typhoon hit Metro Manila directly with over 250kph center winds. We lost electricity for over a month. Electric poles came crashing down almost everywhere in the metropolis.

Yes, that 1970 howler was probably regarded as the strongest back in the 70's and it made landfall in Luzon. I was barely 2 years old that time so I've no absolute recollection. But my parents and siblings remembered this and they described it as a period when the sun never came out for the longest time.

My first recollection of a strong typhoon was Didang which came around May, 1976 if I'm not mistaken. I remember getting stuck in the house for two whole days not doing anything. Even the newspapers didn't get to print anything back then as floodwaters prevented the writers from sending this over to the Port Area where most of the publications' offices are located.

We lost electricity and water for a whole month as I recall. But being a kid at that time, it was really no big deal.

I distinctly remember our American neighbor living across the street screaming at the top of his voice "Lights!! Thank God lights!!" when electricity was restored after the month long brown out. The guy was just so happy.

I miss the old American television programs of the 70's like Hawaii Five-0, Quincy Medical Examiner, Kojac, Petrocelli, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy, Three's Company, CHiPs, Different Strokes, The Love Boat, The Waltons, WKRP in Cincinnati, Welcome Back, Kotter, and many others.

Yeah today all we get on local television are the usual song and dance routines during lunch time and foreign tele-novelas dubbed in Tagalog in the early evenings.

I only watch the news on local television to know what's going on in the Philippines.

But then, Marcos still got what he wanted, courtesy of the P5 coin which came out in the mid-70s:

It's amazing how many people don't even look at old coins when paying. I, for one, just hand off coins based on what they look like based on size and color. I never really notice the tiny details such as who's on the coin, year of the coin, etc.

There were two types of 25 centavo coins being circulated back then. The first one was on its way out while the second photo was more popularly circulated.

Those were the days when the coins were quite heavy. I surmise the 0.25 coin back then would weigh the same as the P1 coin today...

This was probably the best and most recognizable coin back then...

Ever wondered why coin-throwing was a fixture back in the PBA circa 80's? Coins like these are thrown onto the court, with the referees or the opposing teams as targets, and if you get hit with one of these on the head, you'll suffer a gnash or a wound...deadly weapon indeed!

But if you manage to avoid serious injury, then consider the coins as tips.
