Police: Wrestler strangled wife, smothered son

Shocking details continue to come out about the apparent double murder-suicide of professional wrestling star Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and 7-year-old son Daniel.

Lt. Tommy Pope of the Fayette County, Ga. sheriff's office, said in news conference earlier Tuesday that authorities believe Benoit asphyxiated his wife on Friday evening at their home in suburban Atlanta, then similarly killed his son sometime Saturday before hanging himself Saturday night. Authorities previously told the Associated Press that Benoit strangled his wife Saturday and smothered his son Sunday, before killing himself Monday.

Pope said anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home, although authorities believe he had a valid prescription. They also said that bibles were found beside the bodies of both Benoit's wife and son.

Nancy Benoit was found in an upstairs family room with her wrists and feet bound, wrapped in a towel and with blood below her head, said Scott Ballard, district attorney for the Griffin Judicial Circuit, which includes Fayette County. Daniel Benoit was found in his upstairs bedroom. Benoit hanged himself using the cord from a weightlifting machine in a basement weight room, Ballard said. No suicide note was found.

The findings of a toxicology report are not expected for several weeks.

Benoit, 40, was discovered dead in his home by Fayetville police Monday after he failed to show up at two scheduled matches in Texas over the weekend, including at World Wrestling Entertainment's Vengeance pay-per-view event in Houston Sunday night. He cited a family emergency as the reason for skipping the shows.

After friends in WWE received several "curious text messages" from Benoit, and WWE officials were unable to reach him, the sheriff's department in Peachtree City, Ga. went to Benoit's home to check on his family about 2:30 p.m.

After maneuvering through two German shepherds that guarded the home, police found Benoit, his wife and child dead in three separate rooms in the home, according to WAGA-TV. The Wrestling Observer newsletter reported that Fayette County police are operating under the theory that Benoit killed his wife on Saturday, son Daniel on Sunday, and then killed himself Monday at his home – a mansion surrounded by stone walls with a gravel road leading to double iron gates.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the details of the incident may "prove a little bizarre" when they come out.

WWE scrapped its scheduled live, sold-out Monday Night RAW program in Corpus Christy Monday night and sent fans home. In the show's place, WWE chairman Vince McMahon and the WWE announcing team introduced a three-hour career retrospective that included several highlights from Benoit's 22-year career, as well as emotional testimonials from fellow pro wrestlers.

McMahon reportedly broke the news around 4:30 p.m. Monday to a locker room overcome with shock and grief. As news of authorities' suspicion that Benoit killed his wife and son came out, WWE scaled back their tribute to the former world champion on the WWE Web site. The company is scheduled to hold its regular television tapings Tuesday night.

Benoit, a native of Edmonton, Canada, trained in Calgary and made his pro debut in 1985. He plied his trade in Japan for years before become a fixture on the American wrestling circuit in the mid-1990s. He joined WWE in 1999 and won the company's world heavyweight championship at Madison Square Garden at WrestleMania XX in 2004. He was widely expected to win the Extreme Championship Wrestling world title at Sunday's pay-per-view event.

Benoit became romantically involved with the then Nancy Sullivan, who worked as a pro wresting valet under the name "Woman," in the mid-1990s while she was married to another wrestler, Kevin Sullivan. The Pro Wrestling Torch newsletter said the marriage was known among wrestling circles to be volatile.

Benoit had two children from another relationship that were not in the home during the deaths.

hindi kaya cause na to ng too much drugs sa katawan ng mga wrestlers???

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa....

so bizaarre

grabe na yan....

A cut from Foxnews.com:

Police ruled the death a double homicide-suicide and are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths.

Authorities said they found prescription anabolic steroids in the home among other legal prescriptions. Steroid abuse has been linked to depression, paranoia, and aggressive behavior or angry outbursts known as "roid rage."

"There was a lot of prescription medication that he had received from doctors with what we believed to be at this time legal prescriptions," said Lt. Tommy Pope of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

Wrestler strangled wife, suffocated son, hanged himself in weight room; police offer no motive

By GREG BLUESTEIN, Associated Press Writer

June 26, 2007

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine pulley, authorities said Tuesday.

Investigators found anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscle man nicknamed "The Canadian Crippler" was unhinged by the bodybuilding drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage."

Authorities offered no motive for the killings, which were spread out over a weekend, and would not discuss Benoit's state of mind. No suicide note was found.

"In a community like this it's bizarre to have a murder-suicide, especially involving the death of a 7-year-old," District Attorney Scott Ballard said. "I don't think we'll ever be able to wrap our minds around this."

The Montreal-born Benoit was one of the stars of the WWE wrestling circuit and was known for his wholesome family-man image. His wife, Nancy, was a wrestling stage manager who worked under the name "Woman." They married in 2000.

When he won the world heavyweight championship in 2004, Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) hoisted the belt over his head and invited his wife and child into the ring to celebrate. Asked by the Calgary Sun that year to name his worst vice: Benoit replied: "Quality time with my family is a big vice. It's something I'll fight for and crave."

Despite those appearances, Nancy Benoit had filed for a divorce in 2003, saying the couple's three-year marriage was irrevocably broken and alleging "cruel treatment." She later dropped the complaint, as well as a request for a restraining order in which she charged that the 5-foot-10, 220-pound Benoit had threatened her and had broken furniture in their home.

In the divorce filing, she said Benoit made more than $500,000 a year as a professional wrestler and asked for permanent custody of Daniel and child support. In response, Benoit sought joint custody.

The bodies were found Monday afternoon in the house, off a gravel road in this suburb about 20 miles south of Atlanta.

Benoit's 43-year-old wife was killed Friday in an upstairs family room, her feet and wrists were bound and there was blood under her head, indicating a possible struggle, Ballard said. Daniel was probably killed late Saturday or early Sunday, the body found in his bed, the district attorney said.

Benoit, 40, apparently hanged himself several hours and as long as a day later, Ballard said. His body was found in a downstairs weight room, his body found hanging from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment.

A closed Bible was placed next to the bodies of the wife and son, authorities said.

The prosecutor said he found it "bizarre" that the wrestler spread out the killings over a weekend and appeared to remain in the house for up to a day with the bodies.

Toxicology test results may not be available for weeks or even months, Ballard said. As for whether steroids played a role in the crime, he said: "We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at."

Steroids have been linked to the deaths of several professional wrestlers in recent years. Eddie Guerrero, one of Benoit's best friends, died in 2005 from heart failure linked to long-term steroid use.

The father of Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig blamed steroids and painkillers for Hennig's drug overdose death in 2003. Davey Boy Smith, the "British Bulldog," died in 2002 from heart failure that a coroner said was probably caused by steroids.

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., issued a statement Tuesday evening saying steroids "were not and could not be related to the cause of death."

"The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage," the company said, adding that Benoit tested negative April 10, the last time he was tested for drugs.

Benoit was a quiet, roughhewn figure amid the glitz and bluster of pro wrestling. He performed under his real name, eschewed scripted personas and didn't bother to fix a gap where he had lost one of his front teeth. (According to the WWE Web site, he lost the tooth while roughhousing with his pet Rottweiler.)

His signature move was the "Crippler Crossface," in which he would lock his hands around an opponent's face and stretch his neck.

"You always rooted for him, because he was a good guy and he overcame the odds," said Dave Meltzer, editor of the Wrestling Observer, a weekly news letter. "It's like if you watched `Rocky,' and in the end it comes out that Rocky killed his wife and his son."

Benoit met his wife in the 1990s when she was married to rival wrestler Kevin Sullivan. As part of the scripted rivalry, Benoit and Nancy were supposed to act as if they were having an affair. A real romance blossomed, and she left Sullivan for Benoit.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm," said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at their gate. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people," he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who had received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, after the bodies were discovered.

Monday's show was supposed to be a memorial service for WWE owner Vince McMahon. In a storyline concocted by the WWE, McMahon was supposedly "assassinated" in a limousine explosion two weeks earlier. McMahon appeared at the beginning of Monday's telecast and acknowledged the bombing was made up.

The McMahon storyline has been dropped.

Associated Press writers Debbie Newby and Jason Bronis contributed to this report.

WWE® Shocked At Latest Developments In Benoit Tragedy, Concerned By Sensationalistic Reporting

Written: June 26, 2007

STAMFORD, Conn., June 26, 2007 – World Wrestling Entertainment is stunned and saddened by the details released by local authorities concerning the double homicide-suicide involving Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son, Daniel.

However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:

1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.

2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to Benoit’s state of mind, and rightly did not do so.

3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.

4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.

5. WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.

WWE is continuing to monitor the ongoing investigation being conducted by local authorities.

I loved the Crippler character...man of few words but deadly on the ring. One of the best....the diving headbutt, the Crippler Crossface, and so on...

I despise Benoit though for his actions. He doesnt deserve our sympathy whatsoever.

Let's move on with wrestling. There's no point in talking about a classless act like him.

Batista's last stand falls

By Mike McAvennie

June 24, 2007

HOUSTON – The third time, by all rights, should have been the charm for Batista at Vengeance: Night of Champions. Despite being turned away by World Heavyweight Champion Edge at Judgment Day and One Night Stand, The Animal was primed to capture his third World Heavyweight Title in Sunday night’s Last Chance Match. However, when it most looked like victory was his, Edge’s Ultimate Opportunist-ic ways would force a referee’s 10-count to tragically deprive Batista of his third consecutive — and final — opportunity to wear the World Heavyweight Championship.

In the week prior to his presumed death, Mr. McMahon’s match stipulation was direct and to the point — if Batista lost at Vengeance: Night of Champions, he could no longer challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship so long as it remained secure around Edge’s waist. Where others might have wilted from this “win-or-go-home” proviso, The Animal relished it, and was determined to make the most of his last chance. He also made sure that Edge knew it during a Tag Team Match on last Friday’s SmackDown, during which he Batista Bombed, then pinned the World Heavyweight Champion.

Hours before the match, Batista had told SmackDown announcer Michael Cole that an animal is always trapped in a corner, though he hadn’t fully grasped just how true that was until Sunday night. His match strategy was simple: to win. Edge, on the other hand, had an equally straightforward game plan: to survive. That meant weathering the initial storm of Batista’s offensive barrage long enough to find an opportunity. And no one can find opportunities like the Ultimate Opportunist.

Almost immediately, the Last Chance Match proved as brutal as Edge and Batista’s previous two encounters. The warriors countered each other’s fiercest attacks, only to grow increasingly frustrated when they couldn’t capitalize for any longer than a two-count. That is, until Batista counteracted a Rated-R spear with one of his own. With The Animal going for the k*ll with his Batista Bomb, a desperate Edge floored him with a low blow in plain sight of the referee. The official called for the bell, awarding the match to the challenger via disqualification, which was exactly what the Ultimate Opportunist had intended; knowing the title couldn’t change hands by way of a disqualification, he walked up the ramp, content that his reign as World Heavyweight Champion remained intact.

Like our fans in the sold-out Toyota Center, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long was far from satisfied with the outcome. Therefore, despite the Rated-R Superstar’s irate protests, Long ordered the referee to restart the Last Chance Match, then decreed that if Edge got himself disqualified again, he would lose his World Heavyweight Title. The Ultimate Opportunist raced back into the ring to steal a quick pinfall, but not even one of his most powerful spears could put The Animal down for good. Before long, Batista sent his adversary sailing out of the ring, then met him with a Batista Bomb that may well have cracked the outside floor.

Unfortunately for Batista, that’s when his certain victory fell victim to an unfortunate 10-count defeat. The battle-weary Animal not only had to struggle back to his feet, he had to lift Edge’s completely limp body and roll it back into the ring in order to pin him. And pin him he would have…had Batista gotten back inside just before the referee counted 10. Unfortunately, history is defined by mere moments in time, and in this instance, history would prove unkind one last time for The Animal.

Visibly dejected by the fateful decision, Batista vented his Animal rage one last time, planting Edge to the canvas with a second Batista Bomb. He then left ringside, disheartened by the knowledge that when Edge finally woke up, it would still be as World Heavyweight Champion…while he would no longer be a contender for the title. His only chance to ever wear the World Heavyweight gold again now must lie with someone else, someone who can do what The Animal couldn’t in three valiant efforts: take down the Ultimate Opportunist.

In spite of the devastating loss, Batista handled WWE.com’s questions about his future like a man deserving of wearing championship gold. “I think what’s next for me is to take it day by day, week by week,” he said. “I’m still one of those guys that will take any opponent set in front of me—whether it be on SmackDown or any other brand. I don’t respect Edge, but I do respect the World Heavyweight Title and the stipulations from tonight’s Last Chance Match. No matter what, rest assure that one day, I will regain the World Heavyweight Championship.”
