  1. for the benefit of those who commute in going/leaving the new bacolod silay airport, this tip is for you..

In going to the airport, go to the waiting shed area near the silay public plaza. fare would cost P50/head.make sure there's an ample time as there will be a tendency that you will wait there for 10-20 mins waiting for some more passengers. In leaving the airport, you may go straight outside of the airport vicinity. a trike would only cost you around P10-20 depending on your baggage. there's also a van available for P50/head.

if you have "sundo", i suggest going straight to brgy balaring for some seafood menu...

for nightlife, goldenfield remains the only destination. i prefer sweet lips.mas maganda mga babae dun, mautak nga lng din.lol be clear lang sa expectations mo if ever mag VIP ka.

    hope this helps.

balaring is one good place to go for your lunch or dinner. sad to say, these seaside restos (serving fresh seafoods of course) are not open till 9am. very scenic though, the restaurants are standing on seawater

  2. I hope it is true that they are re-opening the airport in Bacolod. I was there two weeks ago and i must say going out from the silay-airport going to bacolod is quite a long trip plus traffic. what more for those people na walang sundo, wherein the airport is not easily accessible for public transport.

For Bacolod specialties, try the following establishments - Bar21 (batchoy); Business INN (kansi); Bobs (palabok, sati babi & fruit punch), Calea (Cakes) and Bong-Bongs or Merci (pasalubong treats).

i remember there's bongbong's at the airport, they also sell Island Souvenirs t-shirts.

i have 2 big clients at bacolod and their properties happen to be near the old airport. this time they are very conscious about the height of the structures. they heard it from a grapevine somewhere that bacolod wants to revive the old airport for some airlines. from my point of view, ok para sa akin, although there's this silay seaside resto in balaring we always go to, kaya ok lang din kung silay pa rin.

is MACHO still open, both its massage parlor and club? a friend is asking

for the more adventurous group, i suggest going to Mambukal, which is at the base of Kanlaon Volcano

  3. there's a big possibility the old airport will be reactivated. that will be good news, silay is 45 to 60 minutes away from bacolod depending on the traffic, which is rare in bacolod.

from silay you'll pass talisay, where the old skeleton house (romantically known as The Ruins) still stand, on your way to bacolod. the people are the friendliest i've met. oh yes, mestizas abound!

The (Negros) Showroom is open daily, 9am to 7pm, to serve clients with fine taste for unusual quality craft products. the place is a showcase of ilonggo creativity and craftsmanship in clothes, trinkets, sculptures, food, etc.

the city itself is old so expect their cuisine to be influenced by chinese, spanish, malayan and filipino way of cooking. it's eclectic, yummy and INEXPENSIVE! 18th Pala-Pala is their equivalent of our Dampa.

guys, share your bacolod trips here ...

  4. kahit too commercialized na ang Boracay, i still enjoyed my stay there last week. super relax and the beach was still great. as usual, ang dami pa ring koreans.

according to the assisting divers of the floating balsa/boat, all of the helmet diving business in boracay are owned by koreans!

  5. Hi S14. Do you mean a place (hotel, inn, apartelle) in Davao mainland or another beach resort that is near Pearl Farm?

if you stay in pearl farm then that's all you'll get: pearl farm --- sunbathe in your skimpiest water attire, eat exotic foods, play beach games, etc. low season: P 4.5k plus. high season: P 6.8k plus. and those rates apply only to 1 person per day.

in my pov, first-timers shouldn't stay at samal island to see more of the city attractions

if it's your first trip to davao and you want to see more of the city, i suggest you buy an EZ map and locate a hotel/inn near the center. after all, most attractions are scattered in all directions in davao. i stayed at roadway inn because of its proximity to abreeza ayala mall, which i prefer to sm davao. P 1,155 a night for me and my 2 teenage kids. the place is decent, downstairs canteen is open 6am to 10pm.

go to sm davao only for 1 reason: buy davao shirts at kultura, plenty of good to great shirt designs. the rest of sm can be seen at manila sm's.

shirts and accessories with eagle designs are only available in the eagle center. however, i didn't like any of the shirt designs, i decided to buy simple eagle keychains instead.

  6. I try to avoid anything packaged in Styrofoam whenever possible. It's useless trash, for one thing, and it's really bad for our bodies, for another. :)

As for Chicken Charlie, a friend of mine brought some to one of our Christmas parties last December. It's nice and flavorful, but I still prefer BonChon. Having said that, BonChon's flavor is a little inconsistent across the franchise, so I would recommend the original branch in Greenbelt if you want to get your chicken fix. It's the best of the three branches I've tried so far. :)

ate at robinson's galleria, their chicken are kinda burnt. i don't know if that's the norm but honestly, i don't like the taste of dishes i order. well, to each his own

  7. does this apply to just cooking the noodles in the styropor bowl ?????

YES, i've heard so many bad things about styro packing, for several years now, so for my personal consumption i put the pack's contents to a ceramic/glass bowl, pour hot water on them, cover them with a ceramic/glass plate, then wait for 3 to 5 minutes before digging in

having worked in a plastics factory for 3 years, finished (plastic) products like styros are not washed and wiped after fabricating them. you just stack them on top of each other, batch after batch. these things have tiny residual flakes, dusts, etc. that will enter your digestive system. old fogeys will tell you not to drink from straws either, which is a good practice.

problem is, when hot, these residues will adhere to your lungs AND STAY THERE FOREVER. same thing happens if you inhale burning plastic or burning rubber. once the smoking plastic or rubber gets inside your system, plastic specks will settle on your lungs and adhere when cooled. this is the reason why in the u.s. and europe, it's illegal to burn your garbage. philippines also copied that law prohibiting burning dried leaves, garbage, etc. but it seems very few baranggays are knowledgeable about it.

  8. article and pic of shin noodle

    http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?id=20110612000044&cid=1103&MainCatID=11

    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/6/11/nation/20110611132959&sec=nation

taiwanese government has urged people not to cook instant noodles in the styro bowl since these have plastic coating inside which reacts with the other chemicals in the noodles and seasoning with high temperature as catalyst. i just cant find the news clip.

as for taiwanese products, i'd steer clear of the milk teas sprouting all over the metro. most of these source their tea flavors and creamers from taipei near di hua street near xi men ting wherein the government is not that strict since these are small stores. ever wonder why these teas taste so addicting and the consistency of the milk and the tea is stable whereas natural tea and cream separate within minutes? this drink was popular in taiwan a few years ago but they have shifted to naturally brewed tea or coffee and juices now. makes one wonder. my 8 year old niece vomits if she drinks more than half a cup. we have since banned them in the family.

as for china made food products, they are the worst. no need to explain further.

sorry to bore you with the technical mumbo jumbo. for confirmation, just consult your doctor or your friendly food tech. ;)

this message is very important and should be passed on to everyone

  9. Value for money in Hotels, I'd say Casa Leticia or Ponce Suites, both are good places in the center of the city, neither of which will break the bank as far as the budget goes, clean and good service for both places.

Pretty much my major complaint in my trip here is that most of the city is non-smoking now, talk about being prejudiced to the minority.

artwise, ponce suites will suit art lovers too! try including people's park in your itinerary.

  10. unforutunately, I have last minute visitors from balikbayan relatives ...... so my schedule the coming week may become a bit hectic. (unless late in the evening ang foodtrip)

my apologies for the last minute change of schedule. Lets hope we can push thru with the foodtrip after the holidays. (I alreadt informed Tequilasunrise thru text)

no can do for me on dec 28. a old canadian friend is in town. we'll be in davao until new year.

  11. Instead of barbie's and girl stuff my dad would always bring me and my sister a box of lego everytime he comes home from work. I was 6 then. Sayang :(

just arrived from my PAL stewardess contact: last airbender lego sets and characters for my daughter. my family's crazy about the nickelodeon cartoon of avatar. i remember 3 years ago, we spent the whole summer playing its 3 seasons of dvd's and finishing its wii games. by the way, the ZUKO character costed me $92 (whew!), i ordered it 'cause amazon said it's the last available stock.

(o.t.) my stewardess friend gave me a surprise christmas gift: a sealed copy of playboy magazine featuring lindsay lohan. yeah, those copies were snapped up once they appeared in u.s. newstands. resourceful, she tapped her usual blackmarket contacts

  12. madami dun sa paligid ng picnic grove, mga 700 lang overnight.

hey, infront of picnic grove is a place (forgot the name, anyway it's big) where you can rent out the cheapest rate in tagaytay. also, you get a swimming pool (very cold as it is!) all by yourself! problem is, it's not overlooking taal volcano. ok lang?

  13. one of your companions is getting quite good at food tasting and i believe would evolve into a much better food tripper.

now if only we can convince her to try sushi.

she's indeed a big puzzle to us hmp, although her subjects require her to be knowledgeable in international cuisine she prefers to stay away from raw foods, sushi included. does it follow she won't even touch a 'kilawin' with a 10-foot pole? that remains to be verified

her other companion, an hrm student, is more adventurous. she surprised us with some unusual comments at the foods she considered yummy. if she can't remember her comments, we did, 'cause we recorded them live with our cameras. one of these days we'll post the pics and her comments as fr's in this thread. well, i consider them both smart and can bluff their way to formal dinners. hehehe. overall, they're fun to be with. deep inside, i know they're hoping to be invited in the binondo estero food trip, if that ever pushes through. matutuloy pa ba?

(o.t.) saw sir tempest21 in maximus a week ago, i should've brought up the topic to him. oh, two tipsy guys talking about a food trip? very unlikely, they'd talked more of girls, and that's what really happened.

  14. TAPPER WORLD TOUR (IPAD2)

This classic arcade PC game is now with the IPAD ....... your goal is simple, serve beer to all your thirsty customers and hopefully avoid breaking too many beer mugs.

I actually find it easier to move around using the ipads touch screen as opposed before to using the keypad on the PC.

I'm currently playing the free version but I won't hesitate to pay for the Full Version. Unfortunately, I think there is a bug so I can't make any purchases.

i used to play this circa 1986 with an apple II, using green monochrome screen. hahaha. ibm pc then was still an infant. computers used to cost a fortune then.

i never got tired playing aveyond games with my daughters.

  15. Been to panglao, bohol recently, stayed at bohol divers club. Thought the place was nice coz their rates are kinda expensive! But to my dismay staff were not really service oriented. And the beach, are not really that nice. Sea urchins and rocks everywhere!ouch! Should have heeded to one of the frs in this forum, that panglao is just better on the picture! Tsk tsk... My regrets of going there :(

just been there again last weekend and as usual i wasn't disappointed with the beach, Alona Beach that is. but contrary to your fr, my family did not encounter rocks or urchins at 1-km. vicinity and we enjoyed every minute we were at sea. i should mention we brought a waterproof camera (panasonic lumix ts3) along that added half of the fun

as for the service, well, i really agree with you on that part. same as in cebu restaurants when we got there a day after, the noises made by talking waiters were really annoying. when we were in bohol tropics i called up the head waiter to address this matter. their small talk and tsismis are louder than the conversations at their guests' tables. and oh, the loudness of their laughter! but back in manila, i noticed even jollibee staff shouting their daily gripes. hmm, not really polite or ethical, in customers' point of view at least.

  16. why let any douchebag affect your food adventures? i usually go into ignore mode upon detecting people like that, and believe me, i've met lots of them. know-it-alls, freeloaders, vips, manipulators, menu hoggers, order dictators... the list goes on. you're there for the food. their company is secondary and complementary.

right. but on the other side, nothing beats meeting new people while eating. pun intended, you can break ice while literally breaking ice. with a group, many expensive family-sized dishes (which you never order alone) become easier on the pocket when shared. and if each dish is served with jokes and laughter, so much the better. your food opinions might differ in each item, but it will be an interesting trip in the end. who knows, some of those strangers (if not all) might turn out to be persons you'd like to be acquainted with after all.

  17. after my nephew lost my fujipix xp10 in donsol and my ge (rated 3m) was water-damaged when we went diving 5m or so in boracay, i finally forced myself to buy a new underwater camera. this time it's a lumix ts3 from hidaldgo street.

this time it looks tough, not just for the stainless screws protruding out, but the specs really say it all. the review says it will take blurred pictures, but none of that happens. really like its shots above and under the waters

  18. Thanks sir for the info

    Planning to go to boracay

    This Xmas

well, during december and january, uso ang gumawa ng "i love you" giant sand castles. dami raw kasi kinakasal during those months. oo nga naman, the groom stands next to "will you marry me?" and pose for a shot, and then bride stands beside an "i love you". kids near willy's rock (the big rock where the grotto is) are becoming skillful in making 4-feet long "boracay" sand castles where they charge 5 bucks for each person posing with it

  19. hows boracay?

    dinaanan din ba ng bagyo??

so far tourists here have been enjoying sunny weather for the past several weeks.

there was a brownout last night, and a long sewage spill infront of le soleil for several days. both stinking problems were addressed immediately though.

kudos to the phoenix fire dancers (they perform nightly beside astoria) for their WORLD CLASS performances. i like their comedy skits best, especially their renditions of leah salonga's miss saigon numbers, while firedancing of course. haven't watched rachel lobangco performed yet (i've heard she's an exceptional firebird) but i 'accidentally' took some pictures of her near the grotto. i never knew she was the 'sheboom girl' until one of my companions pointed out that the one beside her is ms. lobangco.

(o.t.) this is the first time i saw gay dancers with lady backups. quite unusual but about 3 months ago, there was a dance group in maximus whose female dancers were actually backups of the 2 talented male dancers. well, however talented they are, we guys prefer watching only an all-female cast, right boys?

  20. been to miag-ao church. the trip's 30-45 minutes depending on your taxi's speed and the traffic. might cost you from 800 to 1,200 pesos roundtrip.

anyway, we went there wednesday and there's this friendly guy in his fifties who toured us around the church. he said we're lucky it's wednesday 'cause it only opens on wednesday, saturday and sunday. the last two days of the week fill the church frontage with cars and the altar couldn't be photograph because of christenings and weddings.
