  1. still a wishing thread, i see. okay, i will start.

    SUCCESS STORY:

i used to be one of the unathletic almost fat kids, who had to sit it out during pe, since i couldn't play basketball, or volleyball, or any other sport invented by man, animal, or machine.

then, i watched american history X, and saw that black and white scene in the street where edward norton was being arrested. and i said to myself, someday...

started with pushups. the goal was at least, 300 per day. progressed to 500.

i did a lot of pullups.

    then, i added interval running.

the results? i guess my avatar can speak for itself.

  2. i just purchased 2 pounds of Impact whey protein. given my usual schedule, when would be the best time to consume it?

0630H Breakfast (carbohydrates and fats, multivitamin)

    0830H Roadwork/Interval Sprints

    [i'm thinking here, about 0930H]

    1130H Lunch (carbohydrates)

    1330H Boxing Training, Strength

[or maybe here, immediately after boxing...]

    [... or before grappling.]

    1900H Grappling Training, Conditioning

    1030H Supper (high protein)

i also drink enervon hp (high carbohydrate, medium protein, low fat, and electrolytes), usually late afternoon.

and yes, i eat the same thing every day.

  3. kind of difficult? so we're all in agreement that u DO EAT LESS carbs when slimming down. net effect is the same - u eat less carbs or u technically won't when u chose to switch to better carbs.

nope. i'm trying to point out that it is difficult to eat too much.

and suddenly, we're into weight loss. for weight loss, i can personally slash 10 percent of my bodyweight in a day. just like that. of course, that's not healthy. but we are talking about weight loss, not health, aren't we?

i don't know what you have against low fat diets. honestly, i don't know what the hell you are arguing for. we can all use our different approaches for all i care.

here is the main idea for you lurkers:

    eat clean.

it's that simple. (may also translate to "eat better.")

also, the level of intensity varies from individual to individual. fat boy will more likely be able to complete four 3-minute runs (with 2 minute walks in between) than a 20 minute jog. i know. i've been there.

  4. I said better fat...that would mean mono-unsat fats. ur body needs these when repairing cells. It's not just abt which is harder or easier to digest. u need ample supply of fat during recovery.

the upper limit on protein is 1g/lb body weight. u need protein to build muscles, particularly BCAAs like glutamine. Anything more this limit may be a waste (accdg to opinion of most scientists).

most carbs nowadays are evil. prior to the dawn of civilization, men are savages who feed mainly on meat and whole grains. Our bodies are not designed by nature to take in large volumes of processed fibreless carbs, which typify most carbs today. U eat more carbs and u risk being obese. How? our bodies are known to convert carbs to fat when they see carbs in excess. u take in more carbs than what u require for ur daily routine, including training and recovery, and u will surely grow bigger...fatter that is, regardless of whether that carb is high-fibre or low-glycemic. That's just how our bodies respond to carbs. Eat more than what u need, u grow. period.

As one cannot easily estimate the number of carbs he/she requires during the day, it's safer to be on the low side when slimming down.

i also said low fat, not no fat. else i'd piss away all my vitamins.

and sir olympus said better carbohydrates. i doubt that he meant that refined high GI low fiber stuff. it's also kind of difficult to eat in excess if you do focus on the "better" carbohydrates. you get too bloated (i actually tried this). try getting the recommended daily allowance of 300 grams of carbohydrates from wholemeal bread. that's about 20 slices. not only is it difficult to stuff that much bread down your throat, but you also take in 60 grams of dietary fiber. normally, you need about 20-30 grams. (diarrhea anyone?) on the other hand, most fats today are also "evil."

also notice that the body converts excess carbohydrates into fat. (you need an excess of about a kilo of carbohydrates to gain a pound of fat.) i am reluctant to directly ingest fat instead of ingesting an energy source that could be converted to fat.

the body's preferred energy source is also carbohydrates. you need it to keep your glycogen stores high, which in turn will keep you pushing during anaerobic training. you need to keep the intensity high in order for interval training to be effective. and i strongly believe that fitness is not just about calories in - calories out.

moreover, regarding that long post about aerobics, you do not "tone" muscles. muscles look how they look whatever you do. (try looking at a diagram of the human anatomy) you aren't "toned" or "ripped" because a layer of fat covers your muscles, making you look flabby and "untoned." you either focus on burning off that fat, or increasing the size of your muscles. there is no such thing as "toning."

  5. well, if one's fat, he should eat less carbs to lose weight, not just switch to better carbs. less carbs would force ur body to use body fat as fuel, ceteris paribus.

i prefer low fat rather than low carb. fat's so damn hard to digest. it slows you down during high intensity training.

and try to avoid eating more than 25 grams of protein in one serving.

*mumbles to self* what is it with people and carbs? they act like characters from the devil wears prada.

  6. we seem to have lost track of your goal here. you want to lean out. plain and simple.

i would suggest 2-3 days a week of resistance training to build strength and muscle. (do not worry about getting big. you will NOT get big unless you want to get big. and you are going to have to really work for it, man. there are no accidental bodybuilders.) remember that two pounds of muscle burns about a pound of fat per month just to stay alive. in other words, you burn off excess calories doing absolutely nothing.

then, alternate your resistance sessions with interval training. (i personally prefer sprints.) try to get your heart rate up to about 80% of your maximum (220 - [your age]) or more. it keeps you burning at an elevated rate up to 36 hours after your workout. beats the s@%t out of what people call "cardio," or slow long runs.

and eat clean, often. never let more than three hours pass without eating.

  7. A personality disorder is basically a set of traits that combine to negatively affect your life. They have a wide range of causes and some are easier to treat than others. This test is set up to look for the ten recognized personality disorders which are Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal, Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic, Avoidant, Dependent, and Obsessive-Compulsive.

    Personality Disorder Test

  8. and the development of MMA started with people like Marco Ruas (and of course, Bruce Lee), who combined the skills of different martial arts (mixed martial arts) to become an effective fighting method. people back then had a tendency to be purists. now, we have fighters like Georges Saint-Pierre and Anderson Silva who can almost literally do anything.

MMA in the philippines, although young, is taking its first baby steps into real MMA. Magellan Perez, a boxer who wins by submission, and the Lakay Wushu team are but a few examples and evidences of the evolution of this sport locally.

  9. we just love to see two men bashing each other. an unarmed duel. it's all just so natural, using only our god-given physique to battle it out and see who turns out victorious (not necessarily better). even lions do it.

    The Downside

Nobody in this sport gets a title shot after a few fights. One has to rise to the ranks to become a true champion

then again, there's Nobuo Nashiro. 12-1-0, never fought out of japan, and already a two-time WBA super flyweight champion. got his first world title on his eight fight.

sometimes it happens that champions take fights against novices for "tune-ups," or merely to improve their fight records. this is particularly common in thailand, where champions face boxers as green as four rounders. for example, Fashan 3K Battery, 59-9-1, goes against guys with 0-1-0 records and even boxers on their debut fight. in his last 10 title defenses since 2003, only four had double-digit wins and none of them even had 20 wins.

Its just about brute strength.

Boxing on the other hand is about technique grace and skill.

    i disagree.

there was once this fight in metrowalk, where they seemed to forget to weigh the fighters. one guy was pitted against another guy who stood five inches taller and fought about five boxing weight divisions heavier. and despite losing the tiebreaker round, the little guy held his own, with numerous nearly successful submissions.

Vitor Belfort once fought and stopped Tank Abbot. it is clear who possessed more power between the two. and this happened during the days when MMA was still very young.

Royce Gracie in the first UFC submitted a guy who outweighed him by 40 pounds.

and more recently, Frank Mir submitted Brock Lesnar via kneebar. and we all know who monopolized strength, conditioning, speed, and explosive power in that fight.

  10. it is to my understanding that the increase muscle size is mostly due to the increased bloodfolw within the muscle. the muscle probably needs more blood to do 8 sets than to do 1. maybe it's more of an "increasing the size of your gas tank" thing?

focus on doing more total sets per workout rather than doing a lot of exercises.

e.g. 5-8 sets for bench press

    5-8 sets for squats

    5-8 sets for deadlifts

    no need for secondary exercises

    ^^

can't say it better than that.

  11. Sir palakol,

Thank you for pointing about the weights, I believe it is so.

It is not my intention to undermine the hard work of bodybuilders, what I’m inquiring how to loose those love handles without gaining muscles or getting huge as you point out.

    Now..back to regular abs programming.

as far as i know, training volume is what contributes to large muscles. i believe it's continual sarcoplasmic hypertrophy.

The gym instructor told me to also watch out for the gravy, sauce or mayonnaise kasi ito daw ay nakakataba din though we may not know it. I also asked if rice makes one gain weight or naglalaki ng tyan. Sabi nya no, carbs ang rice.

Ill keep that in mind -- the muscovado I mean.

Im on the halfway mark of my "fruit day" -- ive had 2 small oranges, 2 bananas, an apple and some fresh pineapple slices.

Surprisingly, im not hungry and im not feeling faint or weak.

My question though is -- there is a juice brand here called Odwalla -- its all natural and has no additives. They have a variant called SuperFood -- and I was thinking of taking that for dinner. Is that cheating?

    ok lang. basta all natural.

    Sir palakol,

can you please share your fruit diet?

    Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you eat nothing but fruits for one day a week. kind of a detox thing. try backreading. (you could probably add vegetables, as long as they're all natural) the point is to eat like a monkey, because i have never seen a fat monkey before.

napakahirap talaga when it comes to dieting, ako as much what i need to set yun lang kinakain ko..,

we are not other races na can live without rice on their dish..

lifting weights is really essential.., even if you dont do the gruesome crunches, i believe other exercises help flatten your abs indirectly, and helps you build those muscles too..,

but still dont give up on your situps / crunches.., it can tone your abs but a long way to go if you have beer bellies and love handles (like me ;) )

i believe it's been more than a year since i kicked the rice out of my diet. i like sweet potatoes better.

and don't be a racist. hahaha

i was a 2 sport athlete back in college and so my physical well-being was constantly monitored by trainers, dieticians, and therapists. so what i'm imparting right now is not a load of BS but what i've been taught by people with BS degrees...

are you talking about the Ketogenic Diet?

by the way, boxing is 80% anaerobic. basically, it's interval training.

    drink daw reg coke/soda :)

iwasan pa rin hanggang kaya. high fructose corn syrup at katakot-takot na refined sugar. :thumbsdownsmiley:

  12. great news chief!

akala ko dati na nag BJJ ka din but after some back reading si sir leloup pala yun na sa Fabricio din ata nagtratrain. ^_^

Try ko sya this Sunday.

This is my looooonggggg time problem...

    sarap lumamon eh...

last year i tried to do sit ups and some abs exercises, napansin ko na nagfifirm lang sya but the fats around it is nandun parin..hirap mabawasan. This xmas, i ate a lot and napansin ng iba ko officemate na tumaba raw ako and so indeed. Im planning to enroll sa gym this afternoon para sa cardio "daw" (not familiar with the fitness terms). But my prob is, I don’t wanna gain muscles kase kahit papano eh may curved na muscles ko and i wanted it to stay that way.

My housemate who uses to go to gym last year says the exact words im sayin now, but as i saw it, nde nya mapigilan magpalaki ng katawan, i told him na malaki na katawan nya and he just simply said kulang pa daw. Some of my friends said to me that mentality daw sa gym na ganito and nde maiiwasan, kumpetensya kumbaga at maeenganyo ka.

Could someone tell me more about this so called mentality..

    thx..

    1. that "bigger is better" mentality is not a rule in the gym.

    2. not wanting to get huge is not an excuse to avoid weights. you can't accidentally get huge. if it were that easy, do you think people would choose to be as they currently are? you are undermining the hard work of bodybuilders.

    3. you want to lean out. the best way is to increase your metabolism. i suggest a lot of backreading.

  14. Sa morning, before breakfast I try to do a non-stop 20 min stationary jogging on an empty stomach. They say the best time to burn fats ay sa umaga after your body has fasted overnight.

the best time to burn fat is all throughout the day, by increasing metabolism.

Im planning to do that ... but I might not do it for 7 days. Maybe a Fri-Sat-Sun.

I already eat "okay" but I just want what seems to be the detox effect of that.

    LOL @ unggoy. :D
