trebbie
In my experience, learning MA together with other people gave me a lot of benefits, some of which were: 1. The feeling of camaraderie2. Others can push and/or help you learn. For example, watching and/or helping others allowed me to appreciate how to do things better.3. During sparring sessions, having several partners helps you learn to deal with different styles and approaches. For example, sparring with a taller partner will help you learn to adjust your own attack & defense strategies. Another example would be the time I sparred with a Karate practitioner. His "hard" style, defensive orientation, and deep stances forced me to adjust and think of new ways to get through his defense. Howver, one advantage of studying by oneself is that you won't feel embarassed when you make mistakes, especially when you're a beginner. Edited April 23, 2003 by trebbie Quote Link to comment

Pinakamadali? In my own experience of studying different styles, there is no such thing as madali. You will find that serious study of an MA requires diligence and dedication, especially if you plan to become good at it. Another thing is that studying an MA only for a few months will NOT prepare you for the reality of combat, if that is what you're looking for. Have you heard of the saying "A little knowledge is dangerous"? This is very true for MA. BTW, I'm not criticizing you. I just want to offer some (hopefully friendly) advice. Good luck in your endeavors Quote Link to comment

jumborat
pogs109,there is no easy martial art! the term itself already involves discipline and hardwork. if you're planning to do home training, i suggest you hire a personal trainer (but this would be EXPENSIVE believe me). but it would be best to really work your a$$ off in the gym with some groupmates. sparring is a very essential thing in martial arts, so how would you be able to spar if you just train at home? of course your teacher or master would really go easy on you if you spar with him. any kind of martial art is beneficial to your health and conditioning. since you're aiming to use it for protection like you said, why not engage in filipino martial arts (FMA) since this is our heritage? aside from empty handed techniques, FMA will also expose you to weapons training. it would be very helpful to you since nowadays violence is amongst us everywhere. if you're planning to go into the sports martial arts type, there is muay thai, jiujitsu, judo, taekwondo, and karate among other mixed-martial arts. hope that helps!
