SamanthaJones
my staff's pc got infected with a virus from a usb flash drive. i was able to remove the virus. but now the directory tree is not showing. i am sure the directories/files are intact because i can change directories in the cmd prompt, they just do not show up when i type dir or on explorer. OS is XP. when using excel or winword, the only files that show up are in the default directory. TIA I'm not sure if you're issue is similar to this but check this out Source: http://www.mylifeincode.com/2009/07/07/dude-wheres-my-folder-treeview/ http://www.mylifeincode.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/dude-missing-folder-treeview.gif REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}]@=”Explorer Band” [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32]@=”C:\\WINNT\\SYSTEM32\\SHDOCVW.DLL”“ThreadingModel”=”Apartment” [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories] [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\Implemented Categories\{00021493-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}] I saved that to a new notepad document, saved it with an “.reg” extension and double-clicked it. SamanthaJones
^^^ thanks ma'am, but my problem is different. when i expand or click on the root drive c:, nothing shows as if it contains no files/directories. when it is quite obvious that the files/directories are there, otherwise the OS(windows XP) and other programs will not run if they are not. HELP please what is the name of the virus that infected the computer? try this one (Source: http://techfreakindia.blogspot.com/2008/07/surabaya-virus-manually-remove-get-rid.html) (A) At Registry LevelStep 1: Open registry by typing “regedit” at command prompt. In registry ,search for word "Surabaya”.You will see two keys entries as LegalNoticeCaption and LegalNoticeText. It contains the same message, which appears at startup.Delete these keys. No harmStep 2: Keep searching for this word “Surabaya”. There will be lot of entries, are attached to Rundll32. Just remove the Rundll Surabaya text portion from registry key. Remember, keep no trace of Surabaya.Step 3: Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hideen\SHOWALL You will see that value of CheckedValue is 0 means show all files are disabled. To enable it make it 1.Quit from registry and got to command prompt. (Start->Run->cmd)( At Command line levelStep 4. It will change the attributes of all files in C drive. Surabaya hides all the files by making them Hidden and System files. This command resets the attributes of the files to normal. While running this command you may receive error for System Volume information folder. Just ignore.Repeat this command to all drives in your system. Now you may be able to see all files and folders in your drive.Step 5 :When you click on infected drive, the autorun.inf file points to some thumb*.exe file. So delete both the files Autorun.inf as well thumb.exeFrom command prompt issue following commands.Del c:\autorun.infDel d:\autorun.inf (If D drive present. Do same for E, F: drives) Del c:\thumb*.exe /SDel d:\thumb*.exe /SYou may see the command is deleting thumbs.db files too. Don’t worry, these files will get regeneratedCheck the Autoexec.bat files in C: drive. Remove the suspicious entries , if any.Step 6 :Download and install “autoruns” utility. SamanthaJones
thanks a lot Sam J. will try your suggestion. at first i thought it was 'autorun.inf' so i tried to delete it from the cmd prompt but it was not found by the attrib command. the anti virus programs/shield flagged several files with the 'exe' extension with the directories/sub-directories as filenames thus Music.exe, Pictures.exe, and so on. i think the anti-virus has removed/quarantined or disabled the virus(es) but the 'missing directory tree' problem remained. i cannot search for files/directories since explorer does not display them. even the 'dir' command at the cmd prompt shows nada. it's possible system if still infected. when you removed the virus did you disable system restore? try safe mode and run you anti virus/ spyware program. if you could provide the name of the virus ti would help. if not might as well reinstall windows. SamanthaJones
^^^ will try that too come monday... last resort would be to reinstall windows, i have backup files in a separate harddisk anyway. i just do not want to go the trouble of re-installation if i can help it. the pc is actually newly upgraded and i have not installed anti-virus and usb disk security when a staff's daughter plugged in an infected flash drive. muchas gracias Sam J no problem - glad to help Quote Link to comment

elmo37
Delete An "undeletable" File Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open.Close all open programs.Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXEGo to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe.Leave Task Manager open.Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in.At the command prompt type DEL <filename> where <filename> is the file you wish to delete.Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.Close Task Manager. Or you can try this Open Notepad.exeClick File>Save As..>locate the folder where your undeletable file isChoose 'All files' from the file type boxclick once on the file u wanna delete so its name appears in the 'file name' boxput a " at the start and end of the file name(the file name should have the extension of the undeletable file so it will overwrite it)click save,It should ask u to overwrite the existing file, choose yes and u can delete it as normal Here's a manual way of doing it.1. Start2. Run3. Type: command4. To move into a directory type: cd c:\*** (The stars stand for your folder)5. If you cannot access the folder because it has spaces for example Program Files or Kazaa Lite folder you have to do the following. instead of typing in the full folder name only take the first 6 letters then put a ~ and then 1 without spaces. Example: cd c:\progra~1\kazaal~16. Once your in the folder the non-deletable file it in type in dir - a list will come up with everything inside.7. Now to delete the file type in del ***.bmp, txt, jpg, avi, etc... And if the file name has spaces you would use the special 1st 6 letters followed by a ~ and a 1 rule. Example: if your file name was bad file.bmp you would type once in the specific folder through command, del badfil~1.bmp and your file should be gone. Make sure to type in the correct extension. credits to jasobeam Edited October 18, 2010 by elmo37 Quote Link to comment
elmo37
Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth Here's how to Get it back A nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..) Here's how to get it back:1.Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "2.This opens the group policy editor. Then go to: Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth 3.Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab : "By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default." 4.So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%. I have tested on XP Pro, and 2000 other o/s not tested.credits to jasobeam Quote Link to comment
elmo37
PD-Proxy is a tunneling software that can secure your internet connection by encrypting all your connections to the internet. http://www.pdproxy.com/images/about_row1_header.png It can remove/unblock content, services and different websites that is normally blocked by your ISP. It can anonymize your connection because nobody likes to be spied on and tracked. it will secure and encrypt your connection especially if you use public access internet such as Wifi, Hotel or Cell Phone internet. Using PD-Proxy makes it impossible for others to spy on you, they can't even see what sites you are visiting when you are using PD-Proxy. No one can tell your real IP address or identify your locality. All the programs installed on your computer will be working automatically via VPN, which is the main difference between VPN and proxy server, requiring software support for proxy connection. http://www.pdproxy.com/images/about_row2_header.png Benefits of VPN IncludeSecurity - VPNs provide the highest level of security using advanced encryption and authentication protocols that protect data from unauthorized access. When you create a private virtual tunnel between your computer and ours, and surf the internet from there, your VPN account is giving you a layer of security you did not have before. http://www.pdproxy.com/images/diagram-pdproxy.gif Anonymous Surfing - Our service will make anonymous and secure your Internet connection, creating an encrypted tunnel between you and our servers. This will assign a new ip address to your computer, in this case your online activity is anonymous and prevents harassment caused by people tracking you by your IP address. Wi–Fi® Security for a Wireless World™ - when you use public Wi–Fi® hotspots, all the information you send to and receive from the Internet is sent over the air in the clear. Wi–Fi® is a radio, broadcasting everything to anyone who bothers to listen. Web pages, emails and passwords, instant message traffic, everything that’s not encrypted is readable by anyone in the area. PD-Proxy uses industry–standard Virtual Private Networking (VPN) technology to create a secure tunnel between your laptop and the PD-Proxy servers. When you connect to PD-Proxy, all your Internet traffic goes through this encrypted tunnel, preventing users nearby from intercepting your information. Everyone has right to protect privacy online. No one should spy on you while you are browsing anonymously. There are times when we feel hostile environment due to one reason or another, and we really need some solution for anonymous internet surfing, PD-Proxy serves to be the best option at that time! Our VPN services bypass internet filters, and internet browsing goes uncensored. At the same time you are secure, its more like getting complete freedom on Internet. Instructions: 1. Sign up for an account ( Sign Up for Free Here ) 2. Install .NET Framework 4 3. Download and unzip the attachment. (PD-Proxy Installer)4. Open PD-Proxy.exe When a prompt message asking you to install a driver press Yes. 5. Press connect and wait till it says that you are connected. 6. Enjoy browsing the internet safely and securely... Notes: 1. Make sure that you have activated your registered account. 2. Make sure the program has administrative privileges when using Vista/7 3. Make sure you have an active internet connection. 4. That's great! Usually safe mode works because only xp drivers are working, eliminates virus/spyware that are loaded with the drivers. Make sure you turn on system restore back. Glad to help.
