  1. i occasionally listen to metal music of Slipknot,Disturbed,Paparoach,P.O.D.,Adema,Pantera and System of Down, while at work at the office B)

Sorry Miss Perriwinkle, but most of the bands you mentioned aren't even metal.

  2. Heavy Metal took a back seat and plenty of pop acts sprouted...

Heavy metal didn't take a back seat in the '80s. It was actually metal's best decade:

In 1980 alone, there were four major milestones:

    1) Ozzy Osbourne released his debut album, "Blizzard of Ozz" which launched his very successful solo career.

    2) His old band Black Sabbath also released thier first album w/ former Rainbow/Elf singer Ronnie James Dio, "Heaven and Hell." It turned out to be a critical success.

    3) Iron Maiden also released their self-titled debut album. After two albums, the band kick out Paul Di'Anno and replace him with former Samson singer Bruce Dickinson. Maiden would release seven critically acclaimed albums throughout the '80s and play to sold out shows throughout the world.

    4) Judas Priest released "British Steel" which was their breakthrough album in the US.

Hair metal was huge in the '80s! It was staple fare on MTV throughout the decade. In the early '80s, Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Ratt, Quiet Riot and Motley Crue ruled the TV airwaves.

In the mid to late '80s, more hair metal bands dominated MTV and the Billboard charts: Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Winger, Warrant, Skid Row and Guns 'N Roses would surface.

There were also a lot of metal bands who didn't cater to the MTV audience and were firmly underground (at the time) who had their creative peak during the '80s and it was in this decade that they released their most critically-acclaimed albums. I'm talking about bands like: METALLICA, SLAYER, MEGADETH, ANTHRAX, BATHORY, DEATH, TESTAMENT, SEPULTURA, MERCYFUL FATE, KING DIAMOND, OVERKILL among others.

So, I don't think that heavy metal took a back seat in the '80s. In fact, metal was more mainstream in the '80s because of the hair metal bands.

  3. I agree with what someone mentioned a few pages back that the '80s was the best era for music. New wave is obviously a good reason. What's widely considered as the golden age of heavy metal occured in the '80s. Heck, I even like the pop music of the '80s than any other decade.

  4. The '80s, wow memories of my childhood! I was a gradeschooler all throughout this decade. I graduated elementary in 1990. Here'w what I remember about this decade:

I was grade school in San Beda, early to mid-80s, downfall na ng Marcos-era kaya ang daming rally sa Mendiola. Kaya marami kaming half day classes, early dismissal and suspended classes due to the rallies. However when Cory took over, the rallies at Mendiola didn't end. Remember the Mendiola massacre?

Basketball: The Celtics and Lakers ruled the NBA. Jordan was nothing more than a scoring machine who couldn't win at this point in his career. Sa PBA naman, Toyota and Crispa were the kings during the early part of the decade. Mid-80s, Tanduay and Great Taste (remember Ricky Brown?) na. Late-80s, Ginebra and Purefoods na.

Yung baon kong 20 pesos okay nang pang lunch and recess. Pamasahe sa PUJ, 75 cents lang.

I only started listening seriously to music in 1988. NU 107 yung unang exposure ko. Sadly, hindi ko na naabutan ang XB 102. Power 105 pa yung isang new wave station although 99.5 RT played new wave in the late '80s also. My favorite bands were the Cure, Depeche Mode, New Order. Sa local, the Dawn opened the door for bands to enter the mainstream music scene which was then dominated by solo artists like Gary Valenciano and Martin Nievera. Identity Crisis is also noteworthy as another new wave/goth band who got signed by a major label.

I was too young to go party during this decade so I can't comment on the gimmick scene back then.

    More '80s memories to come!

  5. If anyone can modify or add to this history of metal in the Philippines, please feel free to post. But I'd prefer something earlier than what was already mentioned by Sadistic Impaler.

After reading it, Im still in disbelief that local metal bands didn't start sprouting out till the late '80s.

  7. I'm trying to trace the roots and history of metal in the Philippines. I guess I was inspired by the very detailed and highly informative Pinoy punk/hardcore history lesson made by Ninjacol in the hardcore/punk thread.

If any of you guys read that, you'd notice that '80s underground music was dominated by hardcore/punk rock bands and no mention at all of any metal bands. It was only during the tail end of the '80s/early '90s that metal reared its head in the underground scene. By this time, hardcore bands had started incorporating metal into their music and slowly morphing themselves into metal bands. By this time, metal had began to supplant hardcore/punk as the music of choice in the underground scene.

Below is a brief history of metal in the perspective of a poster, lifted from filipinometal.com:

i think i can share a little but philipine metal history in general i think mejo mhrap ata un,pinoi metal ug scene n lng as i witness it,lets start wid warheads on the mid 80s cla ung speedmetal i think n ngkaroon ng break s mainstream f im not mistaken ivory records cla nka sign non, hindi cla lehitimong ug band but for being the first i include them here, speedmetal o thrashmetal ang popular s ug scene i think s olongapo mrmi rin ng emerge n speedmetal bands dun n also our very own ug scene d 1st n witness k nun is deadends ng co2ver n cla ng metallica nun n f u listen to their damnation album ramdam muna ang influence nla they crossover frm hardcore 2 thrash nun, mejo in d late 80s headed by Jun gaza then came out Discant x n among them also came euthanasia,M.A.D. & alikes also in this era mrmi s mga ug bands nun ang ng crossover s thrash, also in this same era the birth of the 1st deathmetal in the pinoi scene was CREMATORIOME follows by the pride of marikina CARESS OF STEEL who latter change its name to K.N.K. found by POL MAGAT himself.in the early 90s enter d 1st black metal emerge in d scene was DEIFAGO (TRIVIA; C Mike Villegas was also a former member of this trio) of course nka panda o corpse paint n cla nun i also remember those fanzines ng mga era n un it was BAKAL,WEREWOLF ZINE,SCRAP ZINE n many more, mga mid 90s n tlaga ng flourish ang scene nun aktibo ang MARIKINA for being d death metal capital on dat era. d pillars of marikina was D.A.B.,ICONOCLAST,POSTHOMOUS,SCUM(TRIVIA i think cla ang unang ng GRIND o ng BLAST nun c mariane d drummer was a female)K.N.K. also n this era unfortunatelly d na i produce d 1st deathmetal compilation called THEMES OF MADNESS dnt know kung bkt d ng materialize but i already listen to d copy it was a garrage rec. pro k! lng kc dats d glory of being in d ug d more n raw o D.I.Y.mas lalong tumataas ang integrity n2,a must have collection i regret i lend dis to my fren n never been able 2 get frm him. d lng nman s marikina nag prosper ang scene nun i remember dis band frm VALENZUELA SARILEGIONE the reincarnation of CREMATORIUME i saw them somewhere in the suburb ug gig in valenzuela, seeing RONALD d bands frontman & the bands music was such a blast it was really an intense set s knla lng ako nka witness n nag mosh at ng headbang ang mga audience which is very rare m mkita s mga dethmetal gig nun & their music differs frm their dethmetal counter parts nla nun, di cla ganon kgaleng technically pro iba tlaga ang music nla they were among those few who defy generic dethmetal on that era n i for one would attest to dat,& also frm BULACAN i can nver forget dis band bcoz of their uncanny skilled n technecallity corret me f im wrong i didnt know kung cla POL or this band pionereed technical dethmetal on dat era im talking abt BRIMSTONE IN FIRE a technical dethmetal frm bulacan f someone of u heard kablang anyo ng buhay a deathmetal compilation u will notice there music in d vein of atheist o ung pnahon ng death on human album, individual thuoght n so on nsa gn2ng akma cla ng tunog nung time n un. pano mga guys alaws n me atik d2 eh wait nu part 2 n2 bka 2morow o kya kung klan n me mgka atik so long guys wait nu ung part 2!!!!!!

  8. Music: mainly heavy metal music but a lot of old school hardcore/punk, new wave, alternative, industrial and electronica as well.

NBA: My all-time favorite teams - the Celtics and the Magic.

Playing the NBA Live series in the pc - since NBA Live 95 pa lang 'to sa SNES nilalaro ko na ito.

    Porn - Damn, I admit I'm a porn afficionado.

  9. I like shoes a lot. I have a good mix of leather and rubber shoes.

For rubber shoes, I like Nike, Adidas and And1.

For leather, I like GBX and Rockport.

Just today, I bought a great pair of GH Bass shoes at Gateway. 50% off siya so from the original 5,200 price I got it for 2,600! Before I bought it, I also window shopped at the Florsheim store. Damn, ang ganda ng shoes nila. Ganda din ng presyo, between 6k to 7k. Ouch! Next time na lang!

  10. I don't like revivals or 'cover songs' which we called it back in the day. Recording artists nowadays revive songs just to get a 'hit song'. Compare that to a band like Metallica who made an album of covers just to pay tribute to their favorite bands.

These talentless hacks shouldn't even be called artists. What's the art in making a revival? They're pure and simple 'interpreters' who can't write a single note nor make a sensible lyric. I really have no respect for singers who don't write their own songs.

Record companies have cashed in on the revival mania because it's easier to make a hit out of an old hit song than to make a hit of a new song. They will simply pay for the rights to the song to the original artist. Yung original artist naman, aside from the rights will collect royalties if ever the songs does well again.

Some of the revivals I loathe so much:

ALL SAINTS cover of the Chili Peppers' Under the Bridge

PUFF DADDY making LED ZEPPELIN's Kashmir into "Comw With Me" ba yun?

  11. Mas malupit pa rin yung Old School Metal.

Mid to late 80's and early to mid 90's.

Brutal, melodic, fast, monumental and great.

Excuse me.

Checked in at Queensland. Ayos nga, 299php for 5 hrs.

  14. Singles OST - jampacked with classics: Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone and my most fave Smashing Pumpkins track - "Drown".

The Crow OST - the Cure, Helmet, Medicine, Pantera and Jane Sibbery's "It Can't Rain All the Time".

The Saint OST - I appreciated electronica because of this album. Sneaker Pimps, Daft Punk, the Orb, Moby, and Underworld's "Pearl's Girl".
