if it ends with a .tar issue the following command:

tar -xvf cedegafilename.tar

this will extract the files inside the archive, perhaps a README or INSTALL files would be extracted as well for you to read, if none of it exists, look for some .sh or .bin files they could be the setup.exe we have in the win32 world.

in case you have a .tar.gz file, change the -xvf with a -xzvf

or if its .tar.bz2, the -xvf should be -xjvf

this is all in root/console window?

i know UP is one of the first school to go online, back when the only ISP we have in the country is ph.net, then a spin-off mozcom. employed din ako ng isang school na connected with ph.net circa '97/'98, wala pang cdwriters nun, then ang linux (slackware) mga 5 diskettes lang, ala pa din yatang redhat.

anyways, check mo website ng ubonto, sabi nila they deliver it via mail. check mo din www.distrowatch.com .

post ka lang ng questions, dami namang sumasagot

i did a dual boot pero matagal na, you need to have an emptry partition for linux, although may distribution yata that could run linux out of a fat partition.

live cd pang testing lang, usually limited ang features. check mo din http://slax.linux-live.org/

yap on diskettes. you could toy around with partition magic to resize an existing partition and create a free one for linux. may low level na tool on linux but i won't suggest it for newbies. good luck sa linux adventure mo :)

well, as to live cd's they are canned version, meaning yung apps na iinstall mo after you boot would eventrually be erased the moment you shutdown, unless you'll install it on a harddisk partition. slax has a set of scripts so you can make you're own live cds with all the apps that you would require.

as to the compatibility, there is this thing called dependencies, first, the glibc versions and architecture should be the same, then yung mga pre-requisite apps and libraries should be present. kaya may separate rpm distributions per distro/versions. what i normally do is to install applications from source, so i have a binary compiled to fit my system. on another note, i am more comfortable using the apps i compile myself para included lahat ng features i need and discarding those i don't.

start by reading some how-to's from http://www.tldp.org

more application info from soureforge.net and of course www.linux.org

bro, baka .rpm not .rmp

in a pinch you could install it using the command rpm -ivh rpmfilename.rpm

The softwares installed on the Live CD depends on the maker of the said CD. RTFM so to speak...also, softwares for your Live CD can either be found on-site or compiled from source (again depending on your distro or CD... :) ). Good luck on Linux!!!

Now I have a question regarding Linux or rather ALSA in Linux...I downloaded the latest kernel source 2.6.13.2 and have already compiled and recompiled it a few times...about 8 times in the past 2 days I believe (for a Linux newbie such as myself, that's quite a nice number... )...now my question is, HOW DO I GET ALSA SUPPORT ON THIS THING?!?!?! I have already enabled the ALSA support as module, and again as built-into the kernel and have enabled and disabled this and that but all I get when I run the test application of Point2Play is that ALSA is either not supported or not configured properly on my BIOS!!! I already compiled version 2.6.12.2 earlier and I remember that I was successful in enabling ALSA support (or at least get it recognized by the P2P app...) but now the solution avoids me...can anyone help?
