Back To The 70's

Classic stuff.....If the tape now rings a bell (and it should!), who were the other performers on this tape? Anyone knows the story behind this tape?

Unfortunately, that tape probably came out while I was still too young to be allowed to listen to it. Hahaha! What I do recall is listening to an LP by Cheech & Chong which I thought at that time was hilarious. My favorite segment from that album is "Ear Ache My Eye" which went something like this:

Rock music playing on the background with guitar solo.

Sound of turntable needle scratching on a record as someone puts the loud music to a sudden stop.

Son: Hey! What's the matter man? You ruined my record. I just bought it...

Father: I don't care what you just bought. Now get penny-perpendicular and get ready for school!

Son: I'm not going to school

Father: And why not?

Son: Coz I got an ear ache, that's why not.

Father: Ear ache my eye! How would you like a butt ache?

And the conversations go on and on using colorful language that to me, at that time, was both amusing and shocking. Another favorite is that segment with a police officer being invited to a class of HS students to discuss drugs.

Cheech, of course, would be the most popular of the two. None other than Cheech Marin who in recent years played the role of Kevin Costner's caddie in Tin Cup.

Cheech and Chong!

I had a copy of that tape --"Going Up in Smoke", was it?

That was a hit duo in the 70's. Chong created a character who was always stoned and who punctuated his every sentence with the term"MAN". Like... Hey, man ... I was there man ...and you know, man.

Eventually, the act became so popular that he needed to give that character a name and so he ended up naming him, what else but.."MAN". =)

I don't mind talk radio, but if the jocks are going to entertain someone like me, I want the conversation to be just like the way we talk to our own friends. We are so limited in this area because people get so sensitive here (sorry to say). People can't say what they feel about certain personalities (even when they deserve a good-ol' thrashing) because they might be served a subpoena for libel. They can't talk about sex because they're gonna get non-stop phone calls from the religious right (ugh!). They can't even make fun of sports personalities. If you get in to something like "Who are the ugliest PBA players today? Let's take your phone calls!", may mapipikon diyan, for sure.

If I can use your example in order to make the show more entertaining: I'd ask the pathetic guy what he likes about this girl from Cubao. "Nagagandahan ka ba sa boobs niya?" "Is she a B cup? C cup?" "What's her skin like? Fair? Light? Dark?" "Maingay ba siya sa kama?"...and stuff like that. See...to my mind, I don't think I'm being bastos. I'm merely asking him to give us a picture of this woman. Since radio is "theatre of the mind", I'm simply getting the guy to paint us a mental picture of this woman even if she looks like Menggay in real life. In other words, I've got the listeners' attention just by being so interested in her! I'm certain my ratings would go up, and it would certainly please the advertisers. Too bad it doesn't work that way here. A comedy show is all for fun and not to be taken too seriously, but we can't seem to understand that. Therefore, our talk shows are flat, unfunny, and a bit "Imeldific".

So back to the music...

Chico: So Delemar, what do you do to pleasure yourself while waiting for the right guy? Wait...I've got an idea....give me your hand! I want to smell your fingers right now......(Man, if only they would be unafraid to push the envelope)

These are the stuff I want to hear on radio!!! Hehehe. No that's Paris Hot!

Actually, I do enjoy watching bits of it when it's shown on Late Night with Conan. You can see how popular this segment is on Conan's show. Without saying a single word, the clips from Walker, TR speak for themselves.....and that's why we laugh.

I enjoyed those segment from Conan. :D

Superstition is playing now on All Hits 70s on Sky.FM

I aso heard of the bastos tape with canned laughter.

Year of Decision by The Three Degrees is now playing. :D :D :D

I think, I'll go out today. Who wants an EB tonight?

Off Topic lang... sorry.

Signing off temporarily (once again) as it seems I'm up for another trip to the Lion City very soon. Huge convention in Singapore by the IMF and World Bank in early September coming up and we have to prepare. Hmm... wasn't the IMF here as well in the 70's? Can't remember...

Leaving you guys with this 70's cartoon theme:

Anybody remember the "candle that looks like a light bulb"

Regards to everyone! :)

Another line from Magnum Force (cuz this is classic Clint):

Police Chief: Got anything else to say to me, Callahan?

Clint: (stares him down) Just one thing.....your mouthwash ain't makin' it!

Even before clicking on that link, I suspect that's the theme from "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home".

Who could forget Harry Boyle's right-wing neighbor who resembled Nixon? Huh? Huh? Huh? :D

The neighbor's name was Ralph (I just can't recall what his last name was) who also ran a paramilitary group to counter any invasion from the "Russkies". :D

Harry's wife was Wilma and their kids were Chet, Alice, and Jayme. I can't recall their dog's name though. :P

Have a safe trip, pards! Looking forward to your highly informative posts/contributions in the future. :thumbsupsmiley:

Speaking of the 70s IMF convention in the Philippines. Correct me if I'm wrong pero I think the PICC was built for the purpose of this event in much the same way that the Folk Arts Theater was constructed in a record time of 70+ days to prepare for the hosting of the 1974 Miss Universe pageant.

Little did we all know that the money to fund these projects was coming from World Bank loans all along. :thumbsdownsmiley: It was part of the Marcos propaganda and "beautification" campaign to silence the not-so-perceptive among us.

Speaking of Cheech & Chong, some time ago I read a news bit about how they were searching for the "new" Cheech & Chong, but I never heard of it again - apparently it fizzled out. Rightfully so, there'll never be another like the original.

I don't know about you guys, but watching a new Betamax movie of C&C would not be complete without taking a mandatory puff or 2 of weed. I don't think we watched any of the movies while sober! You know how you'd laugh and laugh until no sound comes out of your mouth? Ganun!

Paul Reubens, better known as PeeWee Herman, appeared in Cheech & Chong's Next Movie, and boy was he weird (the "hamburger dude") !

Too bad Cheech is now more known for his sober roles. He's Canadian pala. Most of us thought he was Mexican.

Some of us prefer Tommy Chong these days. Cheech has (in recent years) said things to distance himself from that "era in his life". Sure he may have gone mainstream, but it's Tommy who remains an icon for the counter-culture movement.

Here's something for fans of "The Man":
