Businessmen head to Palace to defend Duterte admin

For two straight days, businessmen came to Malacañang to defend President Rodrigo Duterte, who continues to be criticized for his tirades against the United States and European Union.

Three businessmen, who also lead influential business groups and associations in the Philippines, were invited to speak about their thoughts on the Duterte administration during Palace press briefings on Tuesday, October 4, and Wednesday, October 5.

Private businessmen are not usually invited to these briefings. Usual guests are Cabinet secretaries or government agency heads.

On Tuesday, the guests were Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PCCI) president George Barcelon and Employers' Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) president Donald Dee.

On Wednesday, the guest was Australian businessman Peter Wallace of the Peter Wallace Business Forum.

Dee told reporters that the perceived close ties of two countries don't necessarily mean more investments.

During previous administrations perceived to be closer to the US than the Duterte administration, US investments in the Philippines did not grow significantly, he said.

"Here's 3 administrations, two of which were close to the Americans and one was very close, so you would expect that, you know, during the time that the very close administration was in place that there would be a big spike, right? Well, it's not. You look at our FDIs (foreign direct investments), it's flat – $7 billion. You look at it, it's flat, almost flat – $7 billion to 7.7 billion," said Dee.

He said what matters to foreign investors is how "friendly" the Philippine economy is to investors, something the Duterte administration is working on in several areas.

Barcelon also pointed out some gains in streamlining business-related government processes under the Duterte presidency.

"We've seen the reduction on bureaucracy in some of the government agencies. And even the local governments have [taken] the advice of the President to simplify the procedures to help the small businesses," he said.

I really don't get it why would EJK affect foreign businessmen in investing in our country. Unless they plan to make a shabu lab. The admin plans to minimize red tape and speed up all the processing of govt. permits which foreign ivestors will benefits the most.

They will continue to invest as long as they can make money. There are investments in more violent countries like mexico and brazil. Naghost pa nga ng olympics eh.

businessmen are more worried about the international or foreign policies more than the EJK

Digong's EJK is his holocaust of the poor.....

Investors look at the state of rule of law in a country. They look into the consistency of government policy, and whether the government will adhere to its own laws and policy. Because if they're going to invest a ton of money, they want to feel secure that their investments are safe. Linking the administration to EJK affects investor perception. It tells them the government is willing and able to disregard its own laws with impunity. The media coverage on De5 leaves the impression that the administration is ready to stomp out anyone who questions how the war on drugs is conducted.

But the EJK issue has spilled over to other matters as well that are more relevant to investors. It is because other nations and international organizations have called out Du30 on the EJK that he is now bad mouthing them and has threatened to cut off ties. This doesn't sit well with investors because the US and some EU countries are big trading partners of the Philippines. When a country wants to sanction or send a message to another, the first salvo is usually economic sanctions. Just by imposing trade restrictions can easily hurt a country's economy. Luckily the US is in the middle of an election season so they're not going to take any drastic action any time soon as there are a good number of Filipinos living in the US. It's really Du30's unnecessary public statements that are hurting the country. I've faced foreign investment analysts who asked me point blank how they should interpret the conflicting statements of the President and members of his cabinet. And take it from me, you wouldn't want to have to answer that question.

Sleight of hand ba... Many of our Operational troopers (the shooters in the field) are not that ecstatic about the dagdag sahod when they saw those extreme lefties having dinner with PDuts in Malacanang... Specially on the case of the Tiamzon couple where they did painstaking intel work at a cost of a couple of shooters lives... textbook intel operation, nothing illegal done, no torture, no nothing... after finally bagging the Real Numbers 1 & 2 of the kilusan, makikita lang nila pabanjing-banjing sa palasyo...

am no fan of trillanes... as a matter of fact, my family's no fan of both honasan and trillanes and we don't vote for those 2 kasi pamamarisan ng iba... but one thing i agree with trillianes, no need to make any moves, just sit back, grab some popcorn and watch this admin eviscerate itself...

Yes the drug problem is important, but it is not the Only important thing... pwede ka naman makipag-okay sa china and russia without giving your traditional allies the middle finger salute...

just saying...

Peace and order is one of the important factors in evaluating whether or not to invest specially if it involves FDI since long term yan siyempre gusto nila predictable ang socio political and economic environment.
