Duterte gets broad support for drug war

http://news.mb.com.ph/2017/09/23/duterte-gets-broad-support-for-drug-war/

By Bloomberg

More than three-quarters of Filipinos support President Duterte’s drug war, despite thousands of deaths and international condemnation over alleged rights abuses, a Pew Research Center poll has found.

Some 78 percent of Filipinos approve of Duterte’s handling of the illegal drugs issue, with 62 percent believing the government’s campaign was making progress, according to Pew’s face-to-face surveys of 1,000 adults. The president also remained extremely popular a year after his election, with 86 percent saying they had a favorable view of him, a result in line with domestic surveys. The poll had a margin of error of 4.3 percent.

The survey – conducted between Feb. 26 and May 8 – predates some recent controversies over Duterte’s administration, including his declaration of martial law on the southern island of Mindanao and drug-smuggling accusations against his son. Thousands joined protests in Manila and Quezon City on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos’s martial law declaration 45 years ago.

Duterte spokesman Ernesto Abella reiterated the president had no plan to expand military rule beyond Mindanao, where the government has battled Islamist militants. The state “recognizes the fear and indignation of the people against a repetition and perpetuation of such human rights violations,” Duterte said, referring to Marcos’ decade-long martial rule, in a proclamation suspending government work Thursday.

Drug war

Since taking office in June 2016, Duterte has waged a war on illegal drugs that has been condemned by the United Nations, the European Union, and human rights advocates. While Duterte administration officials place total deaths at more than 3,400 as of July 26, Human Rights Watch estimated earlier this year that more than 7,000 people had been killed, including at least three mayors.

The survey also found that 78 percent of Filipinos believed that the current economic situation was good, while 57 said they were satisfied with the direction of the country. That was a 21 percentage-point increase from the last time Pew asked the question in 2014.

The survey found a decline in the Philippines’ long-standing support for its key treaty ally, the US Duterte clashed with the administration of former President Barack Obama and has tilted toward China in pursuit of an “independent foreign policy.”

Some 78 percent surveyed held a positive view of the US, compared with 92 percent who expressed such sentiments two years ago. The share with a positive view of China climbed one percentage point to 55 percent.

Still, Filipinos expressed less confidence in current President Donald Trump than Obama. Some 69 percent of those surveyed trusted Trump “to do the right thing in world affairs,” compared with 94 percent who expressed such confidence in Obama in 2015.

The poll doesn’t account for Trump’s subsequent praise of Duterte, saying he was “doing a great job” and inviting him to the White House.

Three-quarters of people agreed that having US military personnel in the Philippines was a good thing for the country, while 68 percent said they assumed the US would use military force to defend their country from China.

Superstar speaks: Give Duterte space to run the Philippines

http://www.manilatimes.net/superstar-speaks-give-duterte-space-run-philippines/352300/

In resonant words that clearly showed what she thinks and where US foreign policy is going, Haley told the UN General Assembly and international human rights organizations:

The Philippines is suffocating. We must give President Duterte the space to run his nation. We must respect their independence … It is not in our purview to decide administrative issues for the Philippines…

“That is the job of the president.”

Haley elaborated: “Destructive forces have never given the Duterte administration enough space to jump-start his programs of government; they did not even afford him the proverbial honeymoon period…. Now, they have calibrated their plot to ouster movements and this is just the second year of his presidency.”

She called on human rights groups (the UN’s included) to be impartial and not take political sides while dispensing their duties in any particular nation.

"President Duterte was indubitably right in steering Philippine foreign policy towards closer relations with China, Russia, Asean, while taking care to forge strong relations with the US.

These developments invest added significance to the coming Asean leaders’ summit in November, which the country will host and where the US, China, and Russia, and other major nations will be in attendance.

The Philippines is destined to become a bigger player in international affairs, commensurate to its size and impressive growth."

Anti-Duterte just can't figure out how the majority of Filipinos can take Duterte's seeming inconsistencies in his statements, dirty mouth, alleged lies.

PEW survey report explains why. To anti-Duterte yellowtards, google the report and find out for yourselves.

Boc- kailangan talaga 3rd party inspection sa port of origin

Here’s my take on his presidency: if the highest official of the land has enough gall to outrageously lie to the public (regardless if it’s a strategy to fool the opposition or not), it makes one wonder what else he’s lying about.

What this shows is that the people are just his tool for his own personal end.

Pakamatay kayo!

For a minute there, i thought you were referring to the pro duterte rally, as i’ve heard the same thing...

And that feeling of security? That’s an illusion. You just think it’s safe because by sheer coincidence, you did not meet any wrongful doers at the time (they have to take a break too, you know). I bet if you did that everyday, during the holiday season, you’re still bound to get your ass robbed, your wallet pilfered, or maybe worse.

Maybe it’s just your subconscious mind filtering out all the crimes happening, but they are still there. You’re just either too busy focusing on defending your presidential choice or you have just been reading up on the more prominent news like these ejk’s to have noticed.

US ambassador did not defend Duterte – US Embassy

"Makabenta quoted Haley: “The Philippines is suffocating. We must give President Duterte the space to run his nation. We must respect their independence … It is not in our purview to decide administrative issues for the Philippines… That is the job of the president.”

The problem was that the ambassador did not make such statement."

even yung praning na Riding in Tandem KILLER sa Cavite...

It's all in the mind .... Psychological ... Mind conditioning as well.

Yun droga eversince nandiyan yan .... Yun gamit alisto lagi baka madukutan o mahold-up which i don't fear if i am in other generally safe countries like singapore and japan. Sa totoo lang does anyone here have the confidence to go to divisoria with their valuables like nice cell phones, jewelries and cash without fear of being the prey of pick pockets, snatchers or holdupers? Yet they say it is safer now? Ngayon nga yun illegal na pagpatay tanggap na kasi na condition na utak.

True. But its also an OPINION piece. You have an idea what the opinion section in newspapers contains naman, no?

its an opinion page but the statements there are not the opinion of the writer and the publisher. Check it once more. Nireport nung writer na nasa opinion section yung sinabi daw nung taga UN. Hence the words;

"Haley elaborated"

"She called on human rights groups"

"Haley told the UN General Assembly"

and for God's sake that is the Manila Times website, hindi galing sa social media.

wag laging mag magaling, basa basa ng maige din pag may time.

It's still an opinion piece.

You saw that it verified your belief, so you posted it here without double checking the facts first.

It doesn't matter if the opinion piece itself was taken from Manila Times, PDI, or Philippine Star. Opinion pieces (and the sources that the writer based his article from) are not to be taken as fact.

Don't just be a lazy copy paster to verify your own thinking (and that goes for you and Yen Makabenta, the writer of the opinion piece).

It is not an opinion piece but a report in the opinion section.

That would have at least made you double check the quoted "report" first. Just because it agrees with your own opinion, hindi mo na tinignan nga kung totoo o hindi yun "ni-report" niya, knowing na kung saan nakapanig ang opinion ng writer?

And no, hindi ko paniniwalaan din kaagad si Trillianes (I could never trust a thug who threatened to bomb a city). But I would at least be curious if the reports were true or not.
