BARANGAY GINEBRA ON A ROLL, WINS 3RD STRAIGHT

Helterbrand presides over offense as Kings buck Caguioa injury

Wednesday, 28 May 2008

Enjoying the stride and confidence lacking in its game early in the tourney, Barangay Ginebra still found a way to win and sustain its streak Wednesday despite league leading scorer Mark Caguioa hurting his knee and sitting out the final half of a tight, exciting contest versus Magnolia.

Jayjay Helterbrand, Chris Alexander, Junthy Valenzuela and Ronald Tubid did the job for the team in the second half as the Kings whipped the Beverage Masters, 87-76, for a third straight victory in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

"My concern right now is to get the flow. Yun muna ang gusto naming makuha bago isipin ang paghabol doon sa mga teams na nasa itaas. If we can get the flow of things, winning would come later," said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

"We’ve got three straight wins already and I guess we’re slowly getting there. I’m pleased with the patience being shown by the boys," Uichico added.

Getting even with the Beverage Masters who handed them a 92-95 defeat in their previous tiff, the Kings (4-7) moved one full game in front of the Welcoat Dragons (3-8).

With the loss, the Beverage Masters slid to joint seventh with the Alaska Aces at 5-6, just a game ahead of the Kings.

Alexander churned out huge double-double numbers with 29 rebounds and 20 points with Helterbrand adding 23 points, Valenzuela 13 and Tubid nine.

Caguioa scored only six points – his lowest output since making only five in their 115-110 win over Red Bull last Jan. 4 – as the coaching staff opted not to field him back anymore after feeling some pain in his left knee late in the first half.

"Our physical therapist gave us the go-signal to play him again but we didn’t take the risk," said Uichico.

Before the game, Caguioa was averaging 25.6 points – the best in the league including the imports.

Magnolia also lost a key player in Dondon Hontiveros, who sustained an ankle sprain also in the first half.

The Beverage Masters suffered an offensive breakdown in the second half and finished with their lowest output of the season. Their previous low was 77 in a 22-point blowout by Sta. Lucia Realty last Jan. 6.

Magnolia top gun Danny Seigle struggled for a personal season-low of five points.

Helterbrand and Valenzuela banged away back-to-back three-pointers to highlight a key run that enabled the Kings to post a comfortable 13-point lead at 72-59.

It was a battle early on with the two teams fighting through nine deadlocks and 12 lead changes in the first half.

Both teams drew well-balanced games from their players as they ended tied at 24-all in the first quarter and even at 41-all at the half. (NC)

The scores:

Ginebra 87 – Helterbrand 23, Alexander 20, Valenzuela 13, Tubid 9, Artadi 6, Mamaril 6, Caguioa 6, Menk 2, Crisano 2, Salvacion 0.

Magnolia 76 – Watkins 22, Pingris 17, Cortez 10, Tugade 9, Hontiveros 6, Racela 5, Seigle 5, Ildefonso 2, Villanueva 0, Calaguio 0, Pena 0.

There is a good chance if and only IF ????

1.) Menk get his inside game back ( ginebra, virtually has no low post threat, masyadong malambot si Alexander )

2.) Alexander improves in time ( to have the much needed inside scoring )

3.) Reavis will be reactivated ( his defense and long arms, could give Alexander the much needed breather )

4.) Valenzuela , Tubid and Salvacion must step up offensively/defensively ( like what santos and macapagal did when they won the C )

* they can't win a C , with caguioa and jayjay shooting the lights out, they need inside presence, overall teamwork to win the C

my 2 cents

Me laro pala sila bukas against rb, eto na sinasabi ko na acid test para kay Alexander, tignan natin kung makakukha siya ng ganoong kadaming rebounds against parada and the rest of the rb guys. Horrific ang ft shooting ni Alexander, he should improve on that department..

this will truly be an acid test... especially since RB is on a losing streak...

in other words... di nila ibibigay yung game sa BGK unlike some people have suggested in their previous games
