Philippine/filipino References In A Foreign Movie

The only filipino reference in FINDING NEMO is the "nipahut" inside the dentist's aquarium

In the TV Series West Wing, the were several episodes where Martin Sheen (who plays the President of the United States) and John Spencer (who plays the White House Chief-of-Staff) discuss the option of sending troops to the Philippines. Also I remember one scene where one of the characters, during an emergency stiuation, mentions that a certain military general was flying back from Manila.

 

Sometime in the 90's, there was a sitcom called Union Square. That was the name of the diner where the where the characters of this comedy show would hang out. In the diner, one of those who worked there was a Filipino waiter, who spoke tagalog and never spoke a word of English. In fact, everytime he would speak, there were subtitles to translate his pretty witty remarks against some of the other characters. He would often utter one liners such as "gago" or "tanga". In one episode, nag-mura sya. Subtitles simply read "*!@#&$#". Funny show. Too bad, it was never previewed here. The good thing about this show is that the pinoy, while portrayed simply as a waiter, turned out to be a pretty cool character. Often times, his filipino lines came as witty responses to some smart alecky remarks made by the other American actors. :cool:

 

The next movie/tv show, I'm not quite sure. Return of the Jedi (Star Wars Episode VI) featured little characters called Ewoks. They spoke in some incomprehensible language that was charactereistic of many of the aliens in the series. During one scene with two Ewoks speaking to each other, that scene where they first saw C3PO (who they thought was a God), I thought I heard one say to the other "Ito, puno yan."

The upcoming movie "The Great Raid" is about events which happened here in the Phils. during the 2nd world war.

The movie, which recounted the true story of how American soldiers rescued POWs held in a concentration camp in Cabanatuan, featured Cesar Montano as a guerrilla who helped the Yanks in their mission, and other local stars like Rez Cortez, Bembol Roco, Ryan Eigenmann and Rommel Montano.

Ironically, instead of filming in the actual location, the producers opted to film the Philippine sequences in Shanghai.

in the movie "Training Day", Roger (played by Scott Glenn), the retired partner of Detective Boyd (played by Denzel Washington) mentioned that he is gonna retire in the Philippine Islands....made me proud hearing it. Crooked LAPD cops hope to find solace in the Philippines maybe with our cheap beer and women.

It had Philippine actors in it including Maureen Larrazabal (who had a make-out scene with one of the American actors which was cut, anyone see if she exposed her boobies in this one) and Susan Africa among others.

Bill Murray's movie "The Life Aquatic" has filipino pirates!

Got curious, so looked the movie up on IMDB.com:

 

"Trivia: The original script called for the pirates to be Indonesians but since there weren't enough of an Indonesian population in Italy where this film was shot, it was changed to Filipinos."

 

hehehe, funny scene in that movie. Go buy the DVD!!!!

 

BTW, add ko lang yung sa Apocalypse Now, one of their locations was in Pagsanjuan. They actually built a village, and moved an entire Ifugao village to inhabit it for the majority of the shooting, (which was more than a year).

These two films were both light comedies, and both featured Mark Lynn Baker of "Perfect Strangers" (cousin Larry) fame.

 

In "Many Happy Returns," Baker played an incompetent lawyer. When George Segal asked where he studied law, Baker said, "The University of Manila." I guess the producers and writers never thought that there actually is a University of Manila.

 

In "My Favorite Year," which starred Peter O'Toole and Mark Lynn Baker, there was a scene that featured the character of a retired Filipino boxer who was married to Baker's mom. That was when Baker brought O'Toole to his mother's house for dinner. The retired Filipino boxer, whom O'Toole remembered from a fight he saw, was the one who cooked dinner. The dish? Parrot.

sa "8 mm" with nicolas cage. they were watching a sex video and the guy with nic said that it was probably made in the Philippines ~sigh~

 

anyway, here are more on the positive side:

 

sa "Even Stevens" (thats a sitcom), ren stevens (one of the leads) was making a report for school about the philippines throughout the whole episode, mahaba-habang exposure yun hehe

 

sa "Return of the Jedi". if you listen carefully to the ewoks, some speak tagalog. they said a couple of things but the only one i remember was "puno natin yan". the ewok was referring to luke & leia & han

 

sa "Cat in the Hat" the movie with Mike Myers as the cat. there's a magical trunk that serves as the door to the cat's world and its stamped "made in the philippines" hehehe

 

and there was this super cool 70's ninja (ninja?!) movie shot entirely in the Philippines, i loved it! the final battle between the protagonist and the antagonist was held in a "sabungan"! ohmigod! it was so cool, in a wierd sort of way, two great ninjas battling it out in a cockfighting ring. the bad thing is that i forgot the title, tsk.
