Linux Anybody?

Recommended Posts

Hello geeks! Need your help. Anyone here knows hardware overlay for ATI video cards? Just starting out tinkering with direct access to video card memory for faster graphics rendering in linux. HALP!

dont know if this helps.. but ATI does not release source drivers for linux so

its hard to compile it with the kernel, but for decent graphics just use the

default as detected by (*insert favorite HW checker*) as for me, it doesn't

matter I use linux for my servers and development platform.. so no biggie..

but I've read somewhere that NVidia drivers on linux are far better than

ATI ones so I went with NVidia hardware.. :)

i also use an ati video card. i compiled into the kernel ati radeon display support and used the driver as detected by x. can't really tell if i'm pulling maximum performance out of my video card, not a gamer.

sometimes thats the problem with linux, we have no idea if we were able to maximize the hardware. i use nvidia video card on my linux box so far wala pa namang problema. But im sure im not making the most of my card i terms of graphics. buti na lang CLI guy ako. he he he.

mga bro, does anyone here has played around with infra red on linux? kasi matagal ko na binubusisi yung mp3 jukebox howto, tpos yung mga homebrew na infra red howto's, kaso yung mg available na infra red ports locally for the pc were all usb.

24/7 kasi itong linux box ko sa bahay, mahilig naman ako sa music and tamvak ang mp3s ko.

lam niyo na, linux for fun :)

I'm planning to get a Linux OS for my PC one of these days. I was wondering kung ok ba ung Bayanihan Linux for a distro or would you recommend going to another distro like Ubuntu perhaps?

i guess the choice would be yours, try to install a distro you are already acquainted to. but then most people here would recommend other major distros, FC or Mandrake or Debian.

i started at slackware back when it was only a 5 diskette distro and kernel was 1.x, tried redhat, hated (but not too much) fedora, used mandrake when i required gui for other peeps, and i'm back at slackware+dropline gnome.

o, you also have to choose x window manager, gnome or kde :)

Guy's I'm in to the network gaming business... As you all might now by now September 16 is D-Day for the crackdown on illegal softwares... Microsoft Windows specifically... I'm intent on formating my hard disks and installing Linux OS

I'm totally new with Linux and I'll be starting from scratch so I have some questions questions before I do this...

1. Is Linux compatible with the network and Internet gaming softwares like counterstrike, Ragnarok and the likes? If yes, What's your recommended Linux system for me to download?

2. Is it easy to network?

3. Based on some recommendations that I've read here for easy shifting from Windows OS to Linux I've decided to download Slackware and ARK Linux. which is better? Kung may ibang kayong recommends pls free... Basta compatible sa mga gaming softwares...

4. The Linux installer files I'm downloading are in archived format ( ISO and GZ ) .. After I've finished downloading the files I plan to transfer it to a cd.. Can I boot install using the files I saved on the cd?

5. If there's a question that I failed to ask and u think i should know pakisabi na rin...

and last... let me buirst out my anger.... :grr: :grr: :grr:  I wanna kick Bill Gates #@$$...

F()ck microsoft... Two months p lang yun internet cafe ko wala pang return investments ganito na agad... syeeet!!!

1.) Linux can't play Windows binaries natively. If you use a windows emulator such as WINE, SOME may run but not without some difficulties as well. (I'm thinking if some of us programmers here in MTC can join together and try to "skin" XP making it look like Linux so we can run these games but it wouldn't be acceptable to Linux... :P ...also not thinking of a simple skin as in theme but skin as in even the loading text of Linux coupled by the root login and the console...hehehe...dream on... )

2.) Depends on what distro you use.

3.) I don't have any idea...

4.) If they were bootable they SHOULD boot.

5.) We all want to kick Bill Gates...

Nope...it's just that many popular network/online games today are not compiled to run on Linux so you need a Windows emulator, such as WINE, to run some of them. (Please note that WINE is just an emulation software so your software may or may not run. :( ) If the games are Linux binaries, then you can run them quite well (even better :P ) in Linux than in Windows. :hypocritesmiley:

Kung gaming lang gusto mo, I believe Linux is not for you. At least for now. You can say gaming is the last in the list of what Linux is supposed to be used.

However, there are emulators that allows you to run Windows binaries (e.g. games) under Linux. But setup is a little bit a pain and not all are guaranteed to run.

You can also use VMWare which you can install a full Windows OS inside Linux. Of course, there's a performance hit. If you have dual core processors, maybe this is not an issue.

As for the best distro. It's your own choice, better try as many as you can then choose. You are the only one who knows what's best for you.
