  1. what app do you use to convert vids to mp4?

i just noticed you're a moderator. hahaha. anyway, we must have met in one of bizman's pakulo wherein he invited wii games to be played.

how to 'videograb' youtube videos and convert them to .mp4? hmmm, are you familiar with video codecs? if not, you have to ask someone who knows, probably someone who studied in sti, that sort of guy. i'm not that sort of guy, my computer education was limited to apple then, when an apple is either II or IIc. yeah, i'm that old.

run your video grabber (surf for free ones) before running youtube, play the video you want before pressing the grabber's hotkey ... after you saved the video (which are in .flv formats), you look for a converter (probably in greenhills) of .flv to .mp4

now, there's about 8 kinds of .mp4 so i play safe by using 450kbps (medium quality). oh, there are also avi/mp4 types which you should avoid ... hmmm, i'm not really the mentor type. hehehe. but if you have the time, why don't we spend drinking somewhere in the quezon avenue area. i don't want to be bribed with a drink to give away secrets but somehow it always work! hahaha

kidding aside, there's a thread in mtc's lifestyle forums about 'saving a youtube video to ipod or iphone'. pls read that. i have a different method than theirs though ...

  2. mga gurus sir san maganda magload po ng nokia 5800 compatible games na free? thanks po

um, subjective kasi, kung ano ang 'maganda' sa akin, possible na 'pangit' naman sa iba.

try www.store.ovi.com or nokia.com.hk, both of them offer free applications for download ... to name a few. part of the fun in having is finding. kaya surf ka lang ng surf !

  3. wow 15,000 gran nalang? i bought mine last feb, for 19,000. v.11.. sucks no updates coming out yet for my phones version. can't use the front camera, and install latest app. like light saber. but its a good phone. web browsing, it has rss feeds.. camera isn't that big of a deal though.

so far i have no major complaint on v11. there are websites offering v20 and v21 upgrades but i refrained because there might be more harm than good they will bring.

i seldom use it to watch youtube. what i do i watch the videos i like in youtube, 'videograb' them, then convert them to .mp4 which i can watch again and again in 5800

  4. sir remoteworld

    how much to sa labas?

    planning to buy one hehe

are you serious? you've got a great phone already, sir.

i was only justifying my purchase of the unit so i posted the predominance of 5800's good points over the bad points. yeah, i'm that stupid: i read more about 5800 after i bought it! hahaha. got mine last april 25th at 15,400 in celltex greenhills (theatre mall) but now i know its running price is 15k and below. the price keeps getting lower, not because it has problems, because it's like any electronic product.

fyi, nokia has opened its www.store.ovi.com to distribute free and almost-free applications. there are some german websites that give away free 5800 software (especially games). in my case, i browse the software offered in some snobbish symbian website, pick the ones i like, then i try to find them in websites that sell the software in much cheaper prices. one software that i would like best to run in my unit is 'marble maze'. i've tried many ways to install it (one snobbish website is selling it for download, but it won't allow purchases from philippine-based mastercard or visa) like using a genuine indian sim and changing my timezone to new delhi, sending my unit to u.s. and have the stewardess install it using her u.s.-based sim, etc. i hope someday it will be available for purchase here. i like its demo version of 2 levels so much i'm obsessed to get the full 100-level version.

'torch' is better than 'flashlight' (from store.ovi.com). it's one of the 4 shortcuts in my home screen (the other three are 'speed' dial', 'calculator', and 'messaging').

that 8Gig mini-sd card is not enough for me. aside from movies (the whole avatar:the last airbender series, 3's company) my unit has 6 (free!) travel phrasebooks in french, italian, etc. i loaded it also with 4 audiobooks (all light comedy like 'burglars can't be choosers'). someday i might listen to them. hehehe

but seriously, a 5800 (nicknamed 'the tube', i don't know why) is a great companion at those times when you have none.

  5. it's a funny fact that the businessman in us uses a low end computer and a low end cellphone for business, then he gives his high end computer for his kids (who require fast gaming graphics) and his hightech cellphone as a toy. i know a lot of big businessmen who still use 3210 (!) while their N95 (which came free with a plan, and perhaps too complicated for them to use) were immediately given to their kids to use.

in my case, i use MyPhone Duo (which came free with a plan) for business. i bought my Nokia 5800 for leisure (gps, reading, playing and watching my favorite dvd movies) and backup.

the latest issue of Smartphone & PDA Essentials (British magazine) cited Nokia 5800 as the winner in its

    Head-to-Head: Best Multimedia Cellphone.

nokia 5800 bested the following reviewed phones:

    Blackberry Storm

    Samsung Tocco Ultra

    T-Mobile G1

but then again, to each his own hehehe

  6. Best phones i used is the Nokia N82...no current N Series phone can top it, next is the Nokia 5800 XM :D

  7. Only a few guys really utilize the "business features" of the touted business smartphones (whose features are ALSO present in majority of the Symbian N-Series and the XM 5800)..

The I-Phone has its niche.....RIM, Palm, MS Windows Mobile OS and Symbian has its own :D

if you guys just backread, i posted my complaints about globe's erratic billing and globe wireless' blind spots in many locations. yeah, even right here in quezon city. pinagtyagaan ko yan ng 1 year, i complain whenever i'm near the globe center in quezon avenue. i always raise my voice so everyone in that center hears, that certainly turned off a lot of customers. you know what, the staff there couldn't care less if they lose customers. maybe they're just there for the wages, mas gusto nga siguro nila mas konti ang clients para less ang complaints. hehehe, just my 2 cents.

    globe? Booo!

  9. dude not even close... a lot of phones have tried to k*ll the iphone but none of them could touch that revolutionary device... here are some of the cp's i believe would atleast compete at the iphone's league (in the us area)...

    1. t-mobile g1 android phone

pros: has a very powerful os, maps, keyboard

cons: no multitouch capability, no visual voicemail, bulky

    2. blackberry storm

pros: business phone, good coverage area (ofcourse verizon has the largest network in the us)

cons: no wifi capability, slow touchscreen reaction

    3. nokia n96

pros: bulit in tv tuner, high resolution camera, phone stand

cons: price, very bulky, no touch screen capabilities

the iphone 3g on the meanwhile has its own pros like multitouch/accelarometer capability, has ipod and ofcourse the app store which already has 1 billion downloads... its cons are lack flash player, videorecorder and tv capabilities... but theres a solution, jailbreak your iphone and u will get flash with imobilecinema, videorecorder with cycorder and tv capabilities with ustream (which works by the way with 3g when jailbroken) as for your nokia express, that phone has got a lot more to do especially that the new iphone will be coming out in a few weeks right now...

yeah, blackberry is considered the business phone, IN THE STATES! here in our country any particular cellphone is tops if it suited what you (almost) perfectly: well, 5800 has the features i need in one handy phone so for me, it's the TOPS.

  10. somewhere inside the 'settings' menu is 'backup'. i would recommend that everyone should use that once a week. not that an unusual bad luck happened to me during the installation of a funny-sounding game, but it's good practice to avoid repopulating your cellphone with contacts the hard way.

and just when i thought i've exhausted the net of free applications for 5800, i found a loadful and installed these readily:

15 (the 15 numbers sliding game)

solitaire board (a peg jumps on top of another to eliminate the latter, u win if only 1 peg is left in your last move)

breakout (slide a puck horizontally to bounce back a metal ball back to a wall of bricks)

blackjack (oversimplified: no money, no scoring system, only 1 hand against the banker)

5 language packs (hear common travelling phrases in german, french, etc. )

all of the above programs work in my unit in spite of the warning my phone is not compatible!

you bet, i 'backup'ed my files before i installed the new ones.

  11. recently i downloaded and installed a nifty file screensnap. what it does is take a snap shot of your 5800 screen by pressing the camera buttton then save it in images/screensnap in .jpg format so you can easily share it. here's a sample taken from my games directory:

if you're a pocket pc veteran, it's likely you're familiar with 'spb mobile', a software which places your favorite applications on the homescreen. nokia 5800 borrowed this idea to give the user ease and flexibility by putting your 4 favorite applications on your homescreen. thus, from the standard 4 shortcuts ...

    post-149034-1243060909.jpg

i changed them to my favorite applications:

    post-149034-1243060962.jpg

the icon at the top left is 'torchlight' to convert your 2 camera lights into a strong flashlight; next is 'calculator', followed by 'speeddial' (where i put up the faces of my 9 most frequently contacts), then 'messaging'.

here's a snapshot of an amazing game, 'marble maze', which takes advantage of 5800's motion sensor:

    post-149034-1243061093.jpg

note that i used 'screensnapper' for the above pictures to show my point.

  12. so far these text sending problems never happened in my unit. di kaya me factory defect ang nabili mo? hope your warranty still covers replacing it.

in my case, 5800 has a lot more ups than downs. if you are a heavy user of bluetooth peripherals, you may expect some dispairings once in while. for me i could accept that because i keep using it for heavy gps works, which are intended for standalone gps units. in general, 5800 is a winner.

if you're a guy who buys thru internet. try tube5800.com (among others) for free applications for 5800. you'll be surprized how many of them will work wonders for your unit.

  14. may firmware update na ito di ba? mabagal pa rin ba yung phone?

you can download new firmwares for 5800 but nokia keeps warning against that. new 5800 units come with firmware v11. the latest firmware in web is v21, but users reported it's full of bugs so i'm still stuck with v11 until nokia releases a version with less user comments, check out:

    http://www.symbian-guru.com/welcome/2009/0...geotagging.html

(yes, geotagging is now supported in 5800 with v20 and up, but your gps should be working when you take the pics).

you can download the new firmware from this site:

    http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-so...ate-now-with-pc

inside mtc's technology and gadgets' forum, i started a subforum about gps phones

which tells a lot about 5800. i'm a casual 5800 user too. i use it a lot for watching movies (avatar, 3's company episodes, etc) and reading (divine comedy, etc) during idle times (waiting in airport, etc). i find its internal gps great in wide spaces, but i always end up pairing it with a bluetooth sirfstar for extremely fast and reliable satellite reception. the latter drains the battery fast so it was necessary for me to buy an extra battery (1240 pesos in any nokia branches). i use rpmap v6, it was very helpful in my recent trip to naga, one of the cities whose streets were exhaustedly mapped out by our group. by the way, free versions of v3 are available for download: it covers all the streets of metro manila, baguio, bacolod, etc. and major roads of the whole philippines

daylight photo shots of 5800 are passable. shots at dark spots turn out grainy and predominates in green.

it hanged only 3 times since i bought mine last april 25th. bluetooth (gps) dispairing is common during long trips (once or twice for a distance of 120 kilometers, yup my battery hanged on that long.

to my dismay, there are still only a few games available for it. my personal favorite downloaded game is TOUCH MANEUVER. after playing it for a nth time, i finished its 4 levels at 4 minutes, 5 seconds. see if you can beat that hehehe.

i downloaded a trial copy marble madness (perfect for 5800's accelerometer) and was obsessed to obtain its full version. alas, all roads lead to handango.com and that software company won't allow purchases from the philippines (yeah, our country is among those blacklisted for international software piracy). hmm, gotta try asking my friends in the u.s. to do for me.

there was a day i got crazy over it, so i painted an imaginary picture then uploaded a simplified version to my 5800. i made it my favorite wallpaper of home screen:

    post-149034-1242541558.jpg

you can do similarly with your favorite picture. first, downsize your pic (should be in portrait format) then transfer it to your 5800. then open Gallery/Images&Videos, select your pic, click on Option and choose it to be your wallpaper!

i wasn't able to download from umobile. going to a nokia center didn't help either. so i ended up going to greenhills to get my .mp4 copy of rihanna's umbrella, etc. i also use a video converter program to convert my favorite films to .mp4 formats. i read a few years ago that converting from dvd to a lower format (like .avi or .mp4) is allowed by law as long as your dvd is not pirated.

oh, yeah. one thing i noticed is that the phone is better suited for guys who prefer to call than to send messages, just like i-phone. yeah, 5800 and iphone are not suited for heavy texters.

nokia 5800 doesn't have to go head-to-head with iphone. 5800 is a class of its own. and its size is just right, and so is the screen which shows the maps clear and crispy, which for me is A PERFECT ESCORT.

  15. the first page of this forum asks the readers for their collection of original (read: not pirated) dvd's. well, di na ata uso ang mag back-read hehehe.

anyway, i had 2,500 dvd's in my collection, 843 are original (mostly ordered thru amazon, parconline and stewardesses). i can usually buy the latest movies for 50 to 70 pesos, so why buy original new titles? 700+ of my collections are 1985 or earlier, here's a short list:

    3's company (complete: vols. 1 to 8)

the love boat seasons 1 & 2, (still waiting for the next seasons, will stop on season 8)

    fantasy island

    mork & mindy

    amazing stories (complete)

    abbott and castello classics

laurel and hardy (almost complete! - 70 titles)

agatha christie films (all those with helen hayes, peter ustinov, albert finney)

charlie chaplin films (city lights, modern times, gold rush, the great dictator)

marilyn monroe collection (7-year itch, how to marry a millionaire, some like it hot, etc)

indiana jones and young indiana jones (complete, with special features)

bob fosse films (cabaret, all that jazz, the little prince, etc)

    mel brooks films (complete)

classic disney movies (30 or so, like bedknobs and broomsticks)

romance of the 3 kingdoms (complete 40 discs - in chines with english subtitles)

one-armed swordsman, 13 amazons, etc (and other run run shaw films of the 70's)

samurai series (complete, starring toshiro mifune)

    kurosawa films (complete)

labyrinth, the great race, those magnificent men in their flying machines, murder by death + 200 other feel-good movies

woody allen films (complete, 80's or earlier)

astaire and rogers films, bob hope classics

animated lord of the rings, return of the king and the hobbit

jim henson movies (complete, including all storyteller films)

the muppet show (complete 3 seasons)

peanuts (complete except 3 titles, sigh, couldn't find the missing titles anywhere)

i seldom buy originals for new films, but i can't help myself with these:

avatar the last airbender (seasons 1 to 3)

    the birdcage

    lord of the rings (complete)

hayao miyasaki films (almost complete - both original and disney voice-overs, don't have any sherlock hound films)

  16. which is a better camera canonsx 110is or panasonic lumix TZ5 ?

I am confuse . A store owner in quiapo , refuse to sell the canon sx 110 is due to numerous complain . Dark picture .

    Canon is more famous.

    Help me !!!

i own 2 canon cameras, one of them is canon 960si. madilim nga. even reviews of engadget, etc. are not favorable. somehow i prefer the cheap kodak cameras for instant pics.

some lumix cams are being sold at discount prices. might as well get the one with a big lens

  17. MyPhone B23 Duo - Smart and Sun - (bulok ang MyPhone B23 - papalit ka agad ng charger wire, the battery doesn't last long, you have to probe deeper just to fetch the contact number you want, activating sun's gprs for this phone is time-consuming - forget about sun's customer service helping you, they'll just keep you going in circles)

Nokia 5800 - Globe - bluetooth hangs once in while especially in long trips. btw, my bt is sirfstar (gps). software applications are few due to its novelty. playing marble madness with its built-in motion sensor is great (i've tried its demo version, sayang handango.com won't accept orders from our country)

  18. Mine is Fujitsu Lifebook A1120 Super fast! Excellent!

Mine's Fujitsu Lifebook too, got it for 99k 3 years ago. recently the socket for the charger loosens, i had to put heavy books at the back just to wedge the charger wire to that socket. a week later i decided to bring it to Vima Computer, 3rd floor, V-Mall. they charged me 1.5k including the general cleaning and tightening of other items. sulit!

  19. last night it was a delicious trip at Lugawan Republic with BiG_DoGG and HopiaManiPopcorn. it's true there were only 8 tables at the ground floor, but it's full from 8pm (until we left it at 10pm) onwards because of their tasty lugaws (priced 80 pesos and above). the side dish of fresh shrimp siomai is highly recommended. the waiters are attentive and they didn't bug us to order for seconds.
