  1. Sad to know that. Lido is historically known for sliced Asado sold by the grams and packed in banana-leaf lined kraft paper tied with strings. They're the best known Asado house in the whole Manila Chinatown (if not the whole GMA) district.

The only competitor Lido got is Cosmos... luckily still serving Asado & Chopsuey rice (now known as toppings). But Lido's got a better tasting Asado than Cosmo. THAT i can vouch on. A tip for ordering Asado on-the-go: Request the chopper guy for the tip-ending parts that is heavier colored due to oven-roasting. As tip-endings are thinner, hence crispier with a burned-in taste (am not responsible for your contracting cancer due to your preference though).

As for sauce, i never brought their in-house one. I mixed my own and alternate it with Indian Chutney sauce (bought at Indian deli in Paco).]

Back to Cosmos, where located? At Soler, a couple of buildings away from Arranque wet market. If you came in from Republic Mart's building (Rizal Ave), the market is right smack on the corner at your right. Cross the street and Cosmos is on your left. They got a neighbour store selling chandeliers/lightings. Prices are reasonable at Cosmos. That's what Chinatown is known for.

in the good old days (ba't ba ang sarap bigkasin ng words na to?) cosmo has no 2nd floor. you eat standing beside a small round tall table. people lined up for their 'asado on fried rice'. yung fried rice me shreded fried beaten egg (how do say that sir asmo) tanggal ang pagod mo sa sarap. but then again, buhay pa nuon ang lido sa t. alonzo corner ongpin, so we often end up at lido pa rin. hehehe

just an update on lido: the old pugon-cooked asado is now available again at west ave.! (wala ba tayong mga kamay? hehehe). it was just recently re-introduced. try nyo na!

  2. i was checking my friend's 5800 last night

i had a hard time using it, maybe its bcause of the touch screen feature

i also tried to install a java game"tower bloxx"

ang hirap laruin, you really have to install a game that is meant for the unit

i was on robinsons place last sunday and was able to check the unit that is sold on the tiangge

some of their unit is capable of reading chinese languages, it reminds me to check the version of the phone before buying one

you're in luck if that unit you want to buy can show chinese characters. with the new firmware installed, the touchscreen is much much better, 'tower bloxx' is meant for small screen nokia phones. the games made for 5800 are great, hope you try one. with the new firmware, dictionaries are now available, you can listen to the chinese words (cantonese and mandarin) but the characters are still rectangles in my phone. i wrote my problem to nokia.com. i'm hoping they have a solution they can give me soon.

  3. been to a comedy bar (forgot the name) in Morato once..kakatakot umupo sa harap at baka mapagtripan kang alaskahin nung bading. 90% of the time spent there went to hoping "wag sana kami mapagtripan, susmaryosep.." <_<

my group was watching in one of these timog comedy bars about 2 years ago. this gay host keep pestering a very old man who happened to be celebrating his 80th(?) birthday. the audience was having a good laugh until the son of this old man stood up and shouted at the host to stop. the son happened to be a lawyer. the host explained that guests who come to that place should be sport, but i suppose there should be limits. the family went there to celebrate a birthday and make their patriarch happy, but the treatment they got was the opposite. yeah, it isn't funny!

the gay host should had been more creative by finding laughs from things, places, events or people, but definitely not their guests!

  4. Just wondering ... the N5800 comes in 3 colors namely: black, red and blue. is there any major difference between the 3 aside from the physical appearance?

Would there be a difference in the display (ie. if red then your lcd background is also red, if black then also black)?

according to nokia centers, these models have differences. that's why the firmware upgrade for the blue came before the red, and the black/gray is still not available (daw)

  5. Seminal Spy Spoof movie starring James Coburn which heavily influenced Mike Myer's Austin Powers

    post-101504-1205686911.jpg

yeah, i love this film too. it's a great spoof of superhuman-detective films dominating the late sixties. you're lucky to have this, must have come amazon.com?

btw, how do you classify 'classic films' in this forum? are they films from 1970 and earlier? i have watched ALL oscar best pictures and i'm quite a collector myself. though i must admit i slumbered off 50% while watching cavalcade and 7 others.

when i had the luck to have 2 daughters (13 and 14 years ago), i made sure they'll appreciate watching 'classic' films too. so from serious subjects they somehow steered my passion to light subjects. now 60% of our collection now fall into comedy, animation and suspense categories.

what could be better introduction of classics to kids but the disney 'classics' like cinderella, snowhite, mary poppins, (but you should be beside them while watching the dramas of bambi and pinocchio ... )

then increase their appreciation with light comedies like labyrinth, goonies, etc. then introduce abbott and costello 'classics' like africa screams, abbott and costello meet frankenstein, etc.

when they were 10 and 11, i was surprised when they voluntarily picked some like it hot, a funny thing happened on the way to the forum, murder by death ... it happened one night became their fave valentine flick, and it's a wonderful life for christmas.

shaping them to grow up to become ideal disney girls is fruitless, i understand they've their own lives to live. and being in their early teens now, i noticed they did not even squirm watching matthew broderick kissing another guy in torchsong trilogy. trabaho lang

  6. punta ka sa isang wifi location. in your phone, i-download mo ang pdf reader thru 'downloads' sa 'applications'

    they'll charge you P 15 para maactivate!

sad to say, after upgrading the firmware to v21, tapos na ang early-buy promo for pdf reader lite. so i ended up paying

P 714.50 using mastercard. on the positive side, [microsoft] quickoffice is still free - that makes my word, excel and powerpoint files readable in 5800

as promised by v21, some gps functions improved (aside from my overmentioning of added 'geotagging' in your pictures taken with it). notably, the speed of picking up the satellites. paired with sirfstart bluetooth, my unit when cold-started (tunrned on in a place far from the last opened location) is easily located by satellites in 5 seconds flat!

and there were more applications available for download in 'download'. clap clap clap clap clap :thumbsupsmiley:

  7. iphone is one great phone.

try browsing iphonestore and you'll bewildered by its quantity of quality software, the forte of apple.

5800 is one great phone too. i have lauded its features since i started posting in this forum. but software is still wanting.

now here's a page from SMARTPHONE & PDA (British Ed.), issue 88 (June '09):

    post-149034-1245494876.jpg

  8. I updated to v21 a little over a week ago via software updater, no hassles no issues. The touchscreen response is a lot better now which is a good enough reason to do the update. The music player is still crappy though, so i'm using Mobifactor PowerMP3 which is an excellent player. Still no DivX support though. :(

although firmware v21 was available since april (some of my gps friends immediately updated v20 and their units got bricked), nokia released it in their sites only recently after making series of tests to prove its worth.

sir tempest21, nokia t.morato is not knowledgeable how to add chinese or any other language than english and pilipino in our locally-bought 5800. after upgrading to v21, i noticed there's now a dictionary in the 'applications'. the dictionary will further permit you to download chinese and other language dictionaries. i downloaded the chinese, but on the place of characters, i get rectangles of the translations. you can hear a native speaker reading those rectangles though. i think we lack 'one more level to be there'! no problems with french and other latin-based languages.

  9. Actually, you can update the firmware update yourself, no need for the Nokia Care Center to do that for you (Make sure you have the latest version of Nokia Software Updater)

Updating the firmware takes 2-3 hrs tops

Just make sure your net connection is fast :)

well, that's the first thing i tried. but the updater couldn't detect my phone although i can use it anytime as a mass storage device. last resort, i decided to play safe by bringing it to a nokia center. i have a suspicion i'm using a faulty usb cable. i have a friend who has a similar problem. at least we have someone to point our forefinger to in case something gets messed up

just a question: is it true that updating will reformat your mmc?

  10. Have you tried backing up your phone using the default File Manager in the Applications folder? There is a backup option there

i saw that option and i did just that before deciding to update my firmware. hayyy, hope my decision is right: so far v11 has never given me a major problem ...

this afternoon, to check if my fears are unfounded, i went to t. morato's nokia center. they told me to leave my phone and memory card so they can process the update of firmware. they gave me back my phone cover, battery and simcard. they gave me a long explanation why it's necessary to leave them overnight: it takes more than 3 hours to update and check, and recheck blah blah blah ...

i was further told my phonelist with 481 contacts will be restored afterwards by their system, that i have to reenter wifi passwords again, that i have to reinstall programs to my 'newly-erased' memcard, etc.

so now i'm crossing my fingers that the update won't create monsters inside my phone. hmmm, 24 hours without my 5800 ... re-install all the software on the memcard they will reformat but reload with original videos and songs ... i think i'm going crazy for this waiting game

  11. 1. i know how to download/videograb from video sites

    2. im familiar with video codecs.

and lastly, im going back to my original question:

    3. what app do YOU use to convert video files to mp4 that are compatible with 5800XM or you have to go to greenhills just for them to convert files for you?

i have mine, i just want to test out what others are using to know if it's better than the one i already have. :)

    bubuy,

i am using replay converter (which offer more quality options for saving) for .flv to .mp4

but to capture the videos from youtube (which has tightened its downloading leniency), i use flash video player.

  12. ... i've been to a nokia center and i was told the v21 is only available for the blue units, i've to wait another week for my red to be upgraded ...

nokia 5800 is available in blue, red and black (dark gray). somehow i fancied the red so it's the one i'm using. kumbaga sa sports cars, sporty-looking ang red color. 'tsaka red means: fight fight fight. you need some motivating elements like that when you wake up in the morning para full of energy ka. sorry sa mga night persons, type A kasi behavior ko, always on the go.

i'm disappointed with the FREE 500 downloads from universal music's malaysian website: the ones i like to download later were no longer there! they've slashed out something like 50% of the downloadable songs and videos. hmm, expect a lot more to disappear. in my case, if both song and video of the same title are available, i go for the video para me video ka na, me song ka pa!

by the way, go to symbiangear.com, select your unit as nokia 5800, then go to languages. somewhere there is a group of FREE tourist phrase packs! YEAH, JAI HO!!!!

  13. pardon my intrusion, but i think i must agree with palakol :)

actually hindi lang iisa ang posts na ganyan.. it will mislead you if you didn't take time to backread.

one will be amazed how much information is there waiting to be read..

so i actually took the liberty of not just reading the posts from the start, i also copied them for future reference and then started doing them..

proper diet (no deprivation, only moderation) + right exercise = bodyfat loss

i agree with sir palakol too. try to backread, masaya rin naman. and you'll pick up some good points that you were not planning to learn in the first place.

i've been a regular of Planet Infinity (4th floor, Crossroads 77, Scout Reyes corner Mother Ignacia Sts.) for 4 years now, been working out with their trainers one-on-one. but i stopped these last few months because of tight deadlines in my work. the result? i ballooned! kaya disiplina rin sa pagkain. sit-ups, machines and free-weights are useless if you don't discipline yourself on foods rich in calories and fats. try to do push-ups kung tinatamad ka mag-gym, lalo na if you're in long trips

  14. firmware v21 is now available for download from www.nokia.com.ph

they will warn you to backup everything in your cellphone and memory card before updating. now this is something i want to do but i haven't tried yet. if any of you guys know how to backup the phonelist (almost 500 names), etc. pls post it here

should i remove my memory card before updating the firmware? how can i transfer my phonelist to a temporary card (?) then put them back again after the update? safe kaya? hmmm....

one of the best features of v21 is geotagging. turn on your gps, take a shot, and voila! your picture's exif file will contain the geophysical coordinates, making it easily plottable in googlemaps, etc. v21 is supposed to fix some bugs of the earlier versions. but as an oldhand in programming, i'd say a new version might fix old bugs, but it might also create new ones. hehehe

hehehe, i'm replying again to my own post. anyway, i've been to a nokia center and i was told the v21 is only available for the blue units, i've to wait another week for my red to be upgraded. and yes, their place is willing to upgrade it for me. now that's a relief, they'll do the backing up and restoring. i'm in no hurry for the upgrade, even the geotagging has to wait. right now playing aveyond is my top priority!

  15. Thank you sir! na overwhelm ako sa dami ng libre iba na syempre referred ng mga tulad nyo na gurus para virus free thanks again sir!

try also www.globe.com.ph but they charge 30 to 50 pesos per game. if you happen to like the game, sulit na!

caveat emptor: www.globe.com.ph is like other websites that sell software. some of the programs may not work with symbian 60 5th edition series. but for the ridiculously priced P 30 to P 50 per, those applications maybe worth risking to buy!

at the other end of the competition, itunes store sells their software at $ 0.99 which is comparable! hmm, mukhang masarap din mag-iphone. nope, 5800 pa rin ako

  16. sir RW

can your phone read and write chinese characters?

i haven't tried installing any language pack that will support languages other than english. so the chinese title in my mahjong game are simply 2 upright rectangles. it never occurred to me to improve it.

i'll check nokia.com.hk how to install chinese. libre lang naman mga yan.

  17. wow 15,000 gran nalang? i bought mine last feb, for 19,000. v.11.. sucks no updates coming out yet for my phones version. can't use the front camera, and install latest app. like light saber. but its a good phone. web browsing, it has rss feeds.. camera isn't that big of a deal though.

firmware v21 is now available for download from www.nokia.com.ph

  18. i bought my nokia n82 for only 9500, without box manual etc

lahat ng phone ko galing sa mom ko ,

ive been wanting to buy myself a brand new phone ever since..

so if ever im gonna buy one..its nokia 5800

    hehehe

if you ever buy one, upgrade it to the latest firmware first (v21) before saving your phone list, etc.

then you activate your umobile account, add software and songs, etc.

good luck, young sir. for me 5800 fits in my lifestyle, i hope it suits you too
