Thanks for the warm hospitality of 16track and wifey last saturday night EB. Glad to be in touch again with Bods and sbm who came later with a writer friend. We had lots of fun reminiscing the 70s.

some things I remember during the 70's, although I was still a little kid at that period pero its still nice to remember these things:

 

1) Sioktong (meron pa ba neto ngayun?)

 

2) Wooden baby cribs na may mga bolang kahoy sa gilid na pwedeng paikutin

 

3) Trolly (ung gawa sa kahoy na ang gulong eh galing sa bearing ng makina)

 

4) Gemini yellow taxi

 

5) Drinking water direct from the faucet

 

6) Nutribuns sa school na galing kay Imelda

 

7) Kadiwa market

 

8) Red color heavy duty public telephone (eto ung huhulugan mo ng 3-dyes sentimos)

 

9) Black and white TV with with manual channel dial and butterfly antenna, and there are only 5 channels available (Channels 2, 4, 7, 9 and 13)

 

10) Wala pang seat belt or airbag ung mga cars

I remember the Torana very well. It had that release ring just right below the gear shift knob which allowed the stick to engage the reverse gear. It was distributed here by GM -- I believe it was under the Holden line of models. Very heavy to drive but that 1900 engine made it quick enough on the highwyas when many cars frm the mid 70's had 1300 engines.

 

 

Another favorite car of mine then was the 1978 OPEL RECORD which I thought / felt was really beauiful. While the Toyota Crown and the Datsun 200-L were also pretty good, I thought the Opel Record had more flowing lines and a better interior.

 

On my fourth year in high school, my dad gave me the Datsun 180-B which I loved so much. Gas was not expensive so it was ok drivng around in that car. It had an Abacus airconditioner that was the hanging type then --installed underneath the glove compartment box.

 

One car -for sure-that caught everyone''s attention then was the Ford RS2000 which was a modified Escort done by Arthur Tuason. The RS2000 had 2 variants--the standard RS with the Fiberglass nose --and the the Zak Speed with the fiberglass fenders.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1950's, 60's and 70's !!

 

 

First, some of us survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank

while they carried us. ( sioktong ang inumin)

 

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, fish from a can ( brand : ligo

), and didn't get tested for diabetes.

 

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored

lead-based paints, pati na yung laruang kabayu-kabayuhan.

 

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we

rode our bikes, we had no helmets, no kneepads , sometimes wala ngang preno

yung bisikleta.

 

As children, we would ride in car with no seat belts or air bags –

hanggang ngayon naman, di ba ? ( jeep )

 

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. (

maykaya kayo pare ! )

 

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle ( minsan straight

from the faucet)

 

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE

actually died from this. Or contacted hepatitis.

 

We ate rice with tinunaw na purico ( dahil ubos na ang star margarine),

nutribuns na galing kay macoy and drank sopdrinks with sugar in it, but we

weren't overweight kasi nga..... .

 

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

 

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back

when the streetlights came on. Sarap mag patintero, tumbang preso , habulan

taguan¦.

 

No one was able to reach us all day ( di uso ang celfon , walang beepers ).

And we were O.K.

 

We would spend hours building our trolleys or slides out of scraps and then

ride down the street, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running

into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

 

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no

99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell

phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms.......

....WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

 

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no

 

lawsuits from these accidents. The only rubbing we get is from our friends

with the words..masakit ba ? pero pag galit yung kalaro mo,,,,ang sasabihin

sa iyo..beh buti nga !

 

We play in the dirt , wash our hands a little and ate with our barehands we

were not afraid of getting worms in our stomachs.

 

We have to live with homemade guns gawa sa kahoy, tinali ng rubberband ,

sumpit , tirador at kung ano ano pa na puedeng makasakit..pero walang

nagrereklamo.

 

made up games with sticks ( syatong )and cans ( tumbang preso )and although

we were told it would happen, wala naman tayong binulag o napatay .paminsan

minsan may nabubukulan.

 

We r ode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang

the bell, or just yelled for them!

 

Mini basketball teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who

didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Walang sumasama ang loob.

 

Ang magulang ay nandoon lang para tignan kung ayos lang ang bata.hindi para

makialam.

 

This generation of ours has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem

solvers and managers ever!

 

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

 

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned.

Speaking of bikes, I had one that my dad got from the PATRIA bike shop near Cubao -- was it along EDSA?

Foot brake pa uso noon. heheh!

 

Two restaurants along Edsa that I can remember in the 70's were:

 

1. The Tropical Hut along EDSA corner Ortigas.

2. The Italian Village near Guadalupe.

Ford tamarraw. sakayan ng jeep ung megamall ngayon. minute burger. banned ni marcos ang voltes V and video arcades. Ung plastic na kotse sa loob ni daimos na parating nawawala. love bus. gregg shoes. aluminum lunch box. Channel 4. atbp.

I thought the album Frampton Comes Alive was just re-released recently? I remember seeing copies being sold at the Odyssey branch at Crossings along Quezon Ave last time I was there.

 

@masi, bods, 16track: to whom do I owe a copy of Al Jarreau's 1965 album? I recall promising one of you guys a few months back that I'd burn a copy. Meron din akong mga selections of 70s music mostly disco and funk. Hope we could spend one lazy afternoon comparing our lists of songs we have on our cd collections.

I remember nuon Paeng re enacted sa radio yung nasunog na mga astronauts sa Apollo 1 and yung Maggie dela Riva rape case.

 

What I remember about Paeng Yabut is Tayo'y Mag-Aliw....that was after martial law and when he has already mellowed down. Prior to that, I seem to recall that he was a hard-hitting radio commentator. Though definitely not anywhere as brutal as Damian Sotto...

Memorable sa akin yang Tropical Hut sa kanto ng EDSA at Ortigas. First, because I used to go out with this coed who worked there as a crew. Second, (and much later on) I was once on a date when my old '78 Toyota Corona (my first car) broke down along EDSA and I had to leave it at the Caltex gas station (where Megamall Bldg A now stands) for an overnight...then me and my date walked all the way to Tropical Hut at dun na lang kami kumain. That's where I proposed and dun din niya ako sinagot just before it was time to take her home :thumbsupsmiley: .

I finally found a DVD of Jesus Christ Superstar in HMV Hong Kong...in Grade 7 sa Ateneo dati nagsasagutan kami nung exchange between Jesus and Judas : "Get out, they're waiting...get oooouuuut", tapos "Everytime I look at you I don't understand..."...what a classic that Soundtrack was, so many fine compositions.

 

I always look for those movies I watched as a kid, "Custer's Last Stand", "Krakatoa East of Java", "Towering Inferno", "Bullitt"....galing sa HMV HKG, halos lahat ng hanapin ko they have.

never beat a man in tennis. Although Riggs was around 50 at the time, while King was still at her peak.
