for fans of 70s RJ radio, there's a new FM station at 105.9 called RJ Underground Radio. Listening to it is like being in a time warp circa 70s. Yesterday there was Howling Dave hosting Pinoy Rock and Rhythm 12noon to 3pm where like the days of yore, he was conducting interviews with band personnel interspersed with Pinoy rock music old and new. Towards the end of the show he played all Juan de la Cruz songs as some tribute to the band who was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award. 3'o clock to 5pm puro jazz and blues naman ang tugtog - Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Dinah Washington, etc. Check it out and support it. In the wasteland we call FM radio today, these sort of stations have a very short shelf life if not given some listening support. Wala pa ngang mga commercials eh, which is good or bad depending on where you look at it :upside:

I really had enough already of RJ and his current set of DJs kasi. Medyo parang sama talaga dating para sa akin. I actually wrote RJ a letter complaining about his choice of DJs --- where I said his current set of voices were actually the ones the much vaunted RJ jocks of old clearly stayed away from back in it's prime. Hill Billy Willy? Long Tall Howard? Sigh... these guys were AM jocks who played some of the cheesiest music then and still do now. I guess I just really can't stand listening to "Michael Learns to Rock" and ABBA songs which one DJ obviously digs so much.

 

My apologies to fans of those artists ( I respect that you like different music and that's ok too!) but it's just that RJ built it's rep on the strength of being the beacon for rock music and that is what pains us the most.

 

They even retained their annoying and tasteless habit(s) of continuing to talk as the song's intro plays and then stops only when he vocals come in --chirping back again when the solo goes on. The Billy Willy fool even has the nerve to sing along to a few of the records he plays. What rudeness...In many cases, these jokers even cut the music short specially on guitar or piano solos. Just imagine cutting off the outro solos to Sultans of Swing from Dire Straits or the solo to Do it Again from Steely Dan. Annoying, di ba?

 

Those of us who remember the Rock of Manila still pine for the day when RJ would come to his senses and bring back the old format. Unfortunately, commerce dictates otherwise -- so RJ now invites listeners to send in Greetings via Text messages. RJ has a deal with the phone companies so that they get a share of the proceeds of the text messages. Now you get constant greetings read on air from Aling Menchie to Tita Tinay or from the Cruz family in Singalong directed to the Santos family in Dau. Hello! Kamusta kayong lahat?! Hapi besdi na rin! Sigh...

 

That was it for me.. No more lstening to RJ.

pare I don't know the other dj's - puro unfamiliar names, but newcomers or not, they actually hew close to how the old DZRJ was ran before. They play songs then they tell the titles plus interesting tidbits about the record and artist, from what album the song came from, etc . It was actually from these spiels in the 70s that I was able to beef up my rock knowledge. No disrespecting jockeys here - they actually play the songs from start to end. A lot of old rockers and rock songs are being played plus some new rock. Actually haven't listened to that RJ on 100.3 for a long time knowing they have a lot of comedians there masquerading as rock jocks, but I'm sure you'll like this RJ Underground on 105.9..

About RJ Underground, yes I do believe they have resurrected the old format. Kung nandun pa nga o buhay pa sana yung mga dating rockjocks mas masaya sana. Who can forget Red Rooster, The Mole, Cousin Hoagy, Sleepy John, Double A, KId Charlemagne, etc. Pati nga yung poor reception ng radio station kuhang-kuha hehehe.

Yes Sundays 3pm to 5pm is jazz-blues format. This follows Howling Dave's Pinoy Rock & Rhythym at 12 nn. And yes, you can hear a lot of new pinoy talents - plus their songs which I believe never get any airplay in other stations.

Frampton's success went down as fast as he got it! With the release of FCA in 76, the album became one of the biggest sellers of all time in the Live Album category. Unfotunately, none of his albums released after FCA came nowhere near it.

 

Excellent guitar player. His Gibsom LP balck Beauty guitar remains one of the most recognizeable in the music world.

My memories of the 70s would not be complete without remembering the cars of that era. Yun Ford Escort GT tapos naging Escort Sport bago nag full model change to what they called the Escort Brenda (no Miriam did not own one). My lolo was going to get me a 2-door Escort de luxe (the cheapest model) but my dad said pambabae ko lang daw kaya yun Escort na wagon binili. P19k brand new! Ayos! Natitiklop pala yun back seat. Kaya lagi ako meron baon na kapok mattress para tipid sa motel!

Some of the few cars I remember for sentimental reasons were the 78 Macho Machine, the 76 Lancer 2 Door, the 76 Galant 2 Door, the Toyota Sprinter, the 78 Celeste, the Escort RS 2000, the 74 Crown, the 79 Cressida, the Ford Cortina Ghia.

Yup. That's Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band film. It was a total disaster and spelled the eventual end for Peter Frampton's career. The BeeGees and Frampton all thought it was a mistake to be part of it but their contracts with Robert Stigwood was water tight on this one.

 

The only saving grace for this film [at least for many Beatle fans] was the appearance of Earth Wind and Fire in the late part of the movie --where they performed the Beatles' GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE --which was also a highlight of the soundtrack.

thanks for the wonderful time too last night. Coining a 70s term - it was a total blast! Pure 70s magic when you played those Tower of Power, Chicago, and of course that resurrected ex-future favorite Peter Frampton. Pare sige I will look up a copy of that classic live album of his hehehe...
