Back To The 70's

Recommended Posts

napasama pa nga nung natapos ang martial law at bumalik dito si Ramon Jacinto - biglang pinalitan yung format ng RJ - nagkaleche-leche na. Pero if you would think about it - if they go back to the old format today - what kind of rock are they gonna play? I mean the rock music of today - if you can call it rock - parang malayong-malayo na dun sa 70's rock. Would they play what - Creed? Incubus? Audioslave? yung mga 70's artists either they have passed away, or semi-retired, or reformatted - like what David Bowie has been doing of late.

pards ok pala schoolmate mo si Joey Puyat - what's he doing now? Anong high school ba ito, if you don't mind? Johnny Alegre I used to see in campus when I was in college. He also used to jam with the UP Jazz Ensemble nung nandun pa sina Tots Tolentino and John Lesaca.

sayang nga yung mga musicians natin - lalo na yung mga session men na magagaling gaya nina Colby.

Yeh Bro.. DJRJ seems to be locked in a perpetual time warp. I'm not quite sure but one gets the feeling [fromthe the Rock Of Manila website] that the old jocks of RJ has a beef to grind with RJ himself.

THe whole format changed when Ramon Jacinto came back and the old reliable format was gone. THese days RJ radio has gone through so many formats changes that it's almost impossible to count.....

today's rock is very different from the 60s-70s, with the exception of a few bands (soundgarden, stone temple pilots, smashing pumpkins, etc...come to mind)...no offense to the likes (and fans) of nirvana, but no one has yet to surpass or at least equal led zep or rush or jethro tull, to name a few...but to be fair, some of the seattle bands are very good, although their movement seems to have died since cobain's overdose...i guess that's the difference; after hendrix, joplin and morrisson passed away, the torch was immediately picked up...you're right though, age has caught up with the rockers during our time...sabi nga ni mick j "i should stop pretending that i'm still in my 20s"...am no longer up to date with david bowie since his little china girl..do you remember space oddity?...i've seen him on hbo on a couple of strange movies where he does some narration...pare, si joey puyat is probably about four years older than me...in 1974 i was a freshman sa ateneo, siya senior na...i used to watch the up jazz ensemble sa abelardo way back in the 80s...

ah, so it's true about the old jocks vs rj himself...even jim sarthou is quite ambiguous about the whole revival thing...or maybe he is just being diplomatic about it...and rj had the gall to run for senator!!! pre, let's look for a venture capitalist and start a new radio station ourselves (DZAR-All Rock)...i'm sure there will always be a market for the type of music that you, bods and me like...

yup magagaling yun mga mentioned mong acts and I like them too pero wala na din ngayon sila. STone Temple has folded uo, Pearl Jam has become moribund, wala na din Soundgarden. The vocalist of Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, formed Audioslave with guitarist Tom Morello and I like their album - it's got a big grinding sound with lots of good guitar and catchy tunes.

I bought a recent album of Bowie called Earthling and it has a completely different sound - electronica ba yun? It was a difficult listen. But he has come up with a greatest hits album and nandun lahat yung faves natin - from Space Oddity to China Girl to the Falcon and the Snowman theme song.

baka nagkikita pa tayo nung sa UP Theater because I also used to watch the Jazz Ensemble when they played. Ang vocalist nila nuon si Lynn Sherman - now a popular lounge singer in hotels and bars.

pare I gotta check out that website - looks cool.

Kung iisipin mo nga naman - talagang magtatampo yung mga rockjocks dahil nung wala si RJ dito for over a decade at nagpapasarap lang dun sa States, the rockjocks kept DZRJ alive with the kind of music that a whole generation loved and they were able to develop a captive market of true rock lovers. Tapos pagbalik na pagbalik binago format. I was shocked when I tuned in to RJ in '86 after Marcos fled - nadinig ko mga Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc. Not that I had anything against them pero binago talaga yung format - puro tlagang oldies na diba ang pinatugtog.

that's a good idea - or take over an existing station and reformat it...

Nakakpanghinayang talaga eh. Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Mark Knopfler and a lot of other acts are releasing albums every now and then pero you don't hear them in any damned station here. You won't hear them until you buy the CD itself.

We can also try to bring back album-oriented radio which DZRJ pioneered, where you get to play other cuts on the album not just the released singles.

Now all we need is a lot of money and some technical expertise to run and maintain a radio station :D

pare we really should meet when you're here in December...

know what, the bands you mentioned (audioslave, incubus) are foreign to me...out of touch na talaga ako...but given their name, they must be good...i have to spend a month probably re-educating myself...there are so many bands that i have never heard of...that's probably because my music world is confined to pure late 60s to mid 80s... puro tapes and a few select cds (eto, sample tape playlist - sly and the family stone, the dawn, cream, steely dan, edgar winter, genesis --how's that for an eclectic mix?)...play them over and over, pero walang sawa...in between, i can have ewf, getz, jobim, coltrane, joni mitchell, flora purim, seawind...i guess it is the mood and environment you find yourself in...back in mla, i always had my maxell 90 of led zep selections from communication breakdown (1) to kashmir (physical graffitti) in the car, especially during traffic...pare , my most recent acquisition is a vcd of clapton live at hyde park, for only 200 baht (roughly 280 pesos) from a flea market...do you know if david spinozza ever had a cd, the one with on my may to the liquor store?...yes, we were probably both there during more than one concert...ano na ba ang balita sa up jazs ensemble, do they still play?

actually, congress no longer grants franchises for radio stations...thus, the only option is, as you very well said, to take over one, heh, heh...most radio stations do not advertise themselves as being up for sale...but for the right amount of cash, they will...radio here in bkk is even worse because there are only two stations in english; one has a horrendous playlist (read: eminem, whitney, etc...) the other plays 70s-80s, pero medyo baduy (michael jackson, ring my bell, the occasional police)...i just log on to crossover during weekends...ano na ba ang radio diyan, like what is rt, ct and k-lite playing nowadays?

You should try Audioslave - good pedigree ang bandang yan - Cornell and Morello (a great guitarist today, I think formerly with Rage Against the Machine). Catchy melodies, good lyrics, heavy riffs, good solos. Tip din lang sa akin ng barkada ko yan, otherwise wala din akong alam sa mga bago.

That's a great playlist...I had Neil Young's Freedom in the car kanina - Rockin' in the Free World is great to listen to again. Before that it was Hall & Oates and Gabor Szabo for almost a week....

I'm sure David spinozza had an album - great jazz guitar! You can check him out at amazon...the problem is how and where you will find his album. baka nga isa lang ang nilabas nyang album....

Yup I saw some portions of that Hyde Park concert dun sa dvd ng bayaw ko andI might say it's good...am planning to watch the whole thing pag nahiram ko yung player nya hehe...

UP Jazz still plays every now and then pero I don't catch them anymore. dun sa Shangri-La mall they used to have free concerts every weekend nuon sa mall lobby and I remember the UP Jazz was a featured act one time though hindi ko napanuod.

I haven't tuned in to RT for ages na. CT I think reformatted from jazz (read: Kenny G, Yanni  ) to what they call daw as r&b but it sucks still the same. Don't listen to it too. The only station my tuner is locked on too and which I listen to if I need a break from tapes and CD's is 105.1 - Crossover nga yata ito - kasi weekends lang ako madalas makinig - lumang jazz ang tugtog.

Otherwise barren talaga ang radio landscape dito as far as our fave music is concerned. Been this way for years, as you very well know..

Hello there mga katropa. Nice discusssion about rock.

I'm not so familiar with classic rock because I seldom tune-in to RJFM. The stations we (our barkada) listened to in the 70s was 93EI, 99.5RT, 102Magic (live Wherelse music from 10pm-12mn), 101.9 and BM105 for jazz music.

Incubus is my son's favorite as well as Linkin' Park, Eraser Heads, River Maya, South Border and Parokya ni Edgar

When I'm online, I listen to my ITune radio stations such as Aural Moon, radioio70s, etc.

Pareng Bods:

I think this is one of the signs. Last time I checked, there isn't even any particular stationed programmed on my receiver except 105.1. Can no longer appreciate what RT is playing these days and I can't say I'm familiar with any of the other stations.

In my car, I just play cds. Whenever I have time, I just burn them myself so I can record my own selection.

They just don't write songs the way they used to. I guess with the advent of rap (make no mistake, I like rap but I just can't be listening to it all the time), the art of song writing seems to have be taken a nosedive. Notice how it seems at least 30% of the songs they play nowadays are mere remakes.

Even songs like the dreadfully overkilled "Because of You" has, what, 4 or 5 versions by 4 or 5 different artists. #$!$^&* wala na yata kasing sumusulat ng kanta ngayon! Maliban na lang sa mga novelty songs (think Otso-otso, etc.).

for me, got nothing against these 'revival' stations as MAYBE the people in charge is also fed up with those 'nigga artists' claiming the airwaves without singing a single note. worse, bad, unintelligible lyrics make their pieces so forgettable.

kaya nga natutuwa ako when pirates sell those cds, maybe sana malugi ang companies that produce these dang trash. kaya tuloy artists like charlotte church is given an 'overkill' hype since kokonti na lang talaga ang artists na kagaya nya.

RJ seems to be going on a downward spin. The old rock of manila format was a distinct setup that catered to those who really wanted their music in album format and NOT the single releases. Sayang talaga. Album Oriented Radio-- guess we'll never hear the likes of it again.

Yeh.. I also can't remember the last time I switched to RT. That station also fell into some format confusion when Emilio Tuason let go of active management-- very different from the time when RT was big in the late 70's. Their DJs became too talkative and played less music. Same thing is happening now to NU107. Too much talk and not enough music.
