Most exotic meal - in Matsumoto, Japan (up in the mountains) -

start with raw horsemeat sliced very thin (like carpaccio)

then fried honeybees (yes you can taste the honey; no, no stingers)

followed by fugu (blowfish) that left my tongue and lips tingling

In between, grilled eel from the local river and ayu (small freshwater fish). And somewhere in there, boiled conch (must have been brought in from the southern fishing towns).

What was most interesting was the green tea they served to start the meal - sweet (though without using sugar or other sweeteners) and with 24K gold flakes. Gold's supposed to be good for you in small doses.

I'm not squeamish about exotic foods so I've tried quite a few...

turtle - interesting but pretty good...

frog - super delicious, cooked in any way... wow...

field mice - dried adobo... surprisingly good...

wild boar - tastes like ordinary pork but tougher...

horse meat - tough and gamey

cat meat - cold and clammy tasting... uggghh..

dog meat - yummy... very spicy kaldereta....

crickets - crunchy but not really that good...

carabao meat - tough and gamey...

ostrich - yummy... very delicate flavor...

crocodile meat - tastes a bit like chicken...

monitor lizard (bayawak) - yummy...

boa constrictor (sawa) - fried, hmmm interesting but not that good...

Here in HK you really haven't enjoyed winter without having a nice bowl of snake soup (freshly made with snakes, shredded chicken and veggies!)

There was also this South African restaurant in HK before (something Rhino.. can't remember) where I had Croc Kebabs, Wild Boar, Ostrich and you dipped them in this sauce called "Monkey Gland Sauce." It sounds yucky but was really not so bad at all.
