Why This List Exists Metro Manila's luxury hotel landscape has, in the last five years, undergone its most consequential reshaping since the 1976 opening of The Peninsula. Three major reasons: First, the openings. The Westin Manila opened in March 2023. Hotel Okura Manila in April 2022. Grand Hyatt Manila topped out in 2017 as the tallest building in the Philippines. The Lanson Place aparthotel landed at the Mall of Asia. And — most consequentially — Mandarin Oriental returns to Makati in December 2026, after a decade-long absence, on its original Ayala Triangle corner. Second, the closures and rebrandings. Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila closed July 1, 2024 after 48 years on Manila Bay. Resorts World Manila rebranded as Newport World Resorts.
