it's true. we cannot just be sending ill-prepared basketball teams to international competitions. this smart-gilas team had a few years together and yet it still came out 2 wins short of its goal...almost but not quite. maybe if the core of this team will continue with the program and with the addition of new and younger players to take over asi and the other "senior citizens" we might just have a better shot next time. ang problema lang balik pba na naman tayo.

Then there's politics sa lending ng players. One, hindi ako naniniwala sa katwiran ni Hontiveros na fatigue na ang katawan niya. I think the real reason is that Gilas' supporter and patron is Manny Pangilinan na kalaban sa negosyo ng mga Cojuangco. Nahihiya si Hontiveros or pinagsabihan na umalis na siya sa Gilas. That's what I believe is the true reason him leaving our national team.

China rules FIBA Asia tilt, books Olympic berth

MANILA, Philippines – Yi Jinlian buried a free throw with 28.5 seconds left then China made the needed defensive stop as the host team nipped Jordan, 70-69, to regain the FIBA Asia crown at the Wuhan Sports Centre in China tonight.

The Chinese gained outright slot in the 2012 London Olympics while the Jordanians booked a seat in the world Olympic qualifier.

Smart Gilas earlier yielded to South Korea, 68-70, to finish at fourth place.

that was originally the plan: to send a well prepared team. kaya nag smart matched the pba salary for the players to keep them. as i said before:

"what the stupid f#&k is that?!! their contract is a month short of their main goal which the olympic qualifier? and tanga naman! naman they have to start from scratch to play the qualifier a month from now? what foresight!!!"

and eventually we sent a ragtag last minute composed team with pba players (all from talk and text and not necessarily the best choice). i appreciate the support of smart and manny pangilinan but to some extent nauna yung negosyo. unlike danding before, national team first. then eventually pba and negosyo when they did well already in the international games. remember the all amateur squad of ncc reinforced by only 3 fil-ams/naturalized players? sad part in gilas, the cast who were there from the beginning and are very familiar with the system nabangko in lieu of fil-ams. well, hopefully not because they are homegrown.

and i posted this too. sorry for bringing this back.

"so what happens to the 3 year investment? wala na? erase?

and the main goal is the olympic qualifier. how stupid.

or the marketing mileage of smart is over? regardless of the result for our country. smart made money all right. and we thought its all about the country!"

MVP, according to an article by Quinito Henson, is spending roughly 300 million for the Gilas to come into being. That's around the budget of a PBA team for 6 years. So let's continue supporting the efforts of Smart executives instead.

"300M is small for an advertising budget. small portion lang yan out of the billions na advertising budget smart for a year. i would love to support smart's effort. problem is the effort pala has nothing to do with the country but for the mileage of the brand. otherwise tuloy ang contract ng mga players that they invested on, to fulfill the main goal which is the olympic qualifier next month. unless, narealize na hindi pala talaga magagaling yung nakuha nila sa national team so they opted to let them go, and look for new ones. and it took toroman 3 years to know if his players can or cannot. new coach na rin maybe?"

Nagulat ako sa comment ng announcers that the Jordan team has been together for the past eight years! Wow! Nagbunga ang kanilang program! Wala kasing PBA sa Jordan

come to think of it, the last time the philippines played in the olympics was in 1972 (munich olympics) 3 years before the birth of the pba. after that it was all downhill for philippine basketball...well, except for a few shining moments when danding bankrolled the ncc team with ron jacobs calling the shots. just my thoughts :)

Like in the other countries, we should have a national team that practices as a team, day in and day out, whether there are tournaments or not. Until we do this, we cannot hope to catch up with our neighbors where this is the case.

Nevertheless, congratuations to the team and thanks to Smart for providing the financial support!
