  1. Or a good warm Sourdough bread with butter and a warm bowl of Cioppino. A warm ERIC KAYSER baguettes with butter is heavenly. All you need is a steaming bowl of Boston Clam Chowder that's creamy and bacony with chopped Italian parsley and a dash of freshly cracked black peppercorn.

Ooooops, of course with a chilled glass of Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay or Riesling.

  2. Where can you buy a REAL sandwich here in Manila? SUBWAY or QUIZNO's are too commercial. Something like a real Pastrami Sandwich you get from a NY deli that's oozing with everything including a whole dill pickle and condiments like creamed horseradish and Dijon mustard and honest to goodness Dutch Crunch bread and loads and loads of thinly sliced pastrami. Where oh where?

  3. Without being judgmental, are they predestined at birth to have the mindset of a winner or a loser? How about luck? Is there such thing as luck? Are some people just lucky? And some people are just born na malas? Ginagawa mo ba ang suwerte mo? Or dumadating yan sa iyo? Some people say that you work on your luck. They say we are all presented the same opportunities but some can see it and prepared themselves to recognize the opportunity presented to them. Case in point, two girls with practically the same background, same intelligence, same looks, almost same everything, why does the other gets the guy? WHY? (Advertisement ng Salon de Manila)

  4. You make your own destiny. That being said, there are those too who just have the mindset of a winner and a mindset of a loser. Case in point, I got an employee who earns 20K a month, whose lived in partner earns even less than her, nag pabinyag ng anak nila and they spent about 50k for that one day occasion. Ano 'to, winner ba 'to or loser 'to?

  5. My late grandmother, madalas yun sa may Aranque sya namimili. Panalo!

Now that you mentioned it, this is truly the epitome of a sentimental food for me. PAKSIW NA PATA, my father's favorite. My father did not cook but when it comes to paksiw na para, he was the one who would cook and stew it. It was one of our family's favorites. In fact last week, I bought some from a carenderia near my place and made "timpla" to taste the way my father did it. My father's recipe tasted more like Chinese Asado because it had star anise, cloves, bay leaf, black pepper, brown sugar, dried oregano leaves, and "bulaklak ng saging". We ate this with sliced Vidalia onions and patis. The thick sauce on steamed rice was already a meal in itself.

Now that you mentioned the possibility of substituting DUCK, FREE RANGE NATIVE CHICKEN or BEEF TENDON for the PATA, these ingredients would work with the recipe and will give it a new twist. The key is to stew or slow cook the whole thing until the meat of the duck or chicken falls off the bone tender and the beef tendon gives the sauce the needed aspic consistency and taste. This can be garnished with whole stalk of fresh green leeks and cilantro (wansoy). This would be a lovely recipe.

Minsan sa America nagtanong ako sa waiter, what soft drinks do you have?

  7. I have tried the YAKIMIX at the Fort, the one at Masinag and the one at Macapagal Ave. in Pasay, on all occasions I found the food was commensurate to the price I paid. The only thing I noticed in these huge Buffet restaurants, the food are not protected with SNEEZE GUARDS, and this is not only true with Yakimix but even the like of Spirals, Circles, Vikings, etc. One time as I was lining up for some sushi, the guy in front of me cough right into the food without covering his mouth. One time I saw a woman pinching the lechon skin trying to find out whether it was crispy. Often times unsupervised young kids left on their own were playing with the desserts, candies, chocolate frosting.

  8. Riesling is good even with Chinese and Filipino cuisine. This is my go to wine when I want a white wine. The light and sweetness goes very well with lechon, crispy para and other fried foods. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnays are second choices not unless it will be paired with light sauce pasta, grilled seafood or light sauteed vegetables or even fresh garden salads.

Cabernet Sauvignon is my go to wine when I need a red one. The full and robust taste goes very well with red meat types of food. If not available, I can go for Shiraz or even Zinfandel. But these are second choices not unless they are reputed to be from good years.

  9. My favorite at DAIRY QUEEN when I was growing up was their DILLY BAR. We would go to their Taft Avenue location in Malate, almost in front of PWU. Then they opened one during the 70's along Buendia Avevue corner Batangas St. In Makati. Though they had a sit down area inside, most kids would just use the drive in counter and stayed in their cars.
