  1. I heard a few years ago of a plan by government to build a skyway type highway right on top of EDSA. A double deck EDSA would be great but I haven't heard anything else of this plan since that time.

    Kind of hard to do this with the MRT in the middle of EDSA. The skyway extension in Osmena Highway stretching well into Manila is meant to provide an alternate route from SLEX to NLEX so people don't need to pass through EDSA to go to NLEX. I doubt this will do much to decongest EDSA though.

  2. If—

    BY RUDYARD KIPLING

    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
    And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
    And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

  3. Disappointing. With all the hype about this fight, it sure didn't measure up to my expectations. It wasn't much of a fight. Sure it was frustrating that Mayweather didn't engage in a slugfest and just kept on moving around the ring, but Pacquiao didn't exactly bring it either. It was obvious that he was too cautious, too preoccupied with the thought that Mayweather is a counter-puncher. There wasn't the explosive fight that Pacquiao had before his losing streak; and people actually enjoyed his fights because of that explosiveness. It was why the Mayweather-Pacquiao match up was supposed to be an epic one: the best defensive boxer versus the most explosive fighter. But in the end, the entire 12 rounds was just not entertaining. Too bad for those people who paid a ridiculous amount of money to see that match in MGM.

  4. i have read from one article, sinabi ni alex ariza na sa last 4 bouts ni manny, wala naman daw pinagbago or new strategy sa mga trainings niya kaya hindi nya ma KO ang mga kalaban niya... malamang daw ganun din ang gawin nila kay Floyd dahil pera pera lang ang habol nila pareho...

    for me huwag naman sana na ganito ulit ang mentality ng team pacquiao this time. sana may concrete plan sila and strategy on how to beat Mayweather.

After his two losses eh it wouldn't be surprising na may "nothing to lose" mentality na yung tao kasi wala na sya record or winning streak na pinangangalagaan. Si Mayweather meron. Kung walang automatic rematch clause sigurado na hindi na lalaban ulit itong si Mayweather. Perfect way for him to retire. Undisputed pound-for-pound boxer of his time. Kung manalo lang si Pacquiao papayag ulit yan na may rematch. Kahit na "Money" ang tawag kay Mayweather eh si Pacquaio naman talaga yung mas pera lang ang habol. Kailangan eh, to keep up with his newfound lifestyle.

  5. this is so classic. may-december affairs. teacher-student discretions. have you heard about a female teacher getting impregnated by her 14 year old student? the teacher went to jail, while carrying their baby. after many years in incarceration, the teacher got back with her student-lover, dunno if they're happy though.

    I think this story got featured recently in Barbara Walters' show. The story was, the student was 13 years old, the teacher was 31 I think, married and with 4 kids of her own - the eldest of which was 11 years old at the time. The teacher got impregnated by the 13 year old, so she was sent to prison for child rape. She got out on parole 6 months later, then got impregnated by the kid again. So she was sent to jail pregnant to serve her full sentence and gave birth to the 2nd child in prison. This was when her husband divorced her and took all their 4 kids to Canada. A few months after the teacher got out of prison, she married the student who was already 21 years old by that time. They are still happily married now, and their 2 kids (daughters) have good relations with the 4 kids with the first husband.

  6. In this day and age, to meet a woman who is no longer a virgin is considered normal. It is nothing unusual and there is certainly nothing wrong about it. What comes to mind? Well, for one, the subject of intimacy won't be harder to talk about. I would think that she would be more mature and has a better sense of independence. Of course it all depends on the woman. Not all of them are the same.

    The more interesting question is, what comes to mind when you find out your GF is still a virgin.

    Marshall McLuhan's media study works in the early 1960's suggested that the media itself is the message and that they are intrumental in shaping human and cultural experiences. There is one communication theory called Used and Gratification which basically suggests that many people consume media with the intent to live a life vicariously. People consume media based on different motives which may include social interaction, entertainment, escape, arousal, etc.
    I think that as much as the media shape and influence our society, people also shape the media. Media provides the content based on demand. Drama and sensationalized stories are rating because people show interest and the more people show interest, the more media will show the same content. And because the media is showing the same content, more and more people adapt, accept and follow the content because they find some sort satisfaction. Bottomline is that both media and the people consuming media have responsibilities and both can influence one another.

    I agree that the consuming public and the media both can influence one another. It is plain and simple case of supply and demand. But the more relevant question is, who has more influence in creating this demand? Because whoever can exert more influence has the greater responsibility.

    Media as a platform is a way by which people can attain greater social interaction, such as various social media platforms like facebook. Sometimes it can even provide an escape from oneself entirely assuming the identity of a different person under the veil of anonymity, much like in this forum. Media in this form is a way by which the public conveys what is in demand. In the multitude of voices surfaces what people presently have interest in, and the multitude in turn influences the individual. Media in this instance, provides a venue for the marketplace of ideas.

    It is different, however, when a central voice controls what is being "sold" in the market. This is the case of networks who essentially have control over the content of whatever they broadcast. In this media platform, ideas are not exchanged; rather, they are conveyed. I use the term "networks" as a proxy for all kinds of media in this form (television, print, radio, etc.). The people can show interest in a lot of things, but networks can select which among these to convey. In a different scenario, networks can even take an uninteresting thing and convey that it is what now interests people. Though it was not true when it was first conveyed, it eventually becomes true because people will begin to take interest in it thinking that others already have. And this is why those who control the media have greater responsibility.

  8. Hello MTC Lawyers,

    Im in dire need of your expertise..

    Currently, im renting an apartment for more than 5 years now, and ever since they dont issue an OR for our payments. In short, di po sila nagbabayad sa BIR ng tax pertaining to the business that they have ( 4 unit apartments ). my family had been in a very difficult situation right now where in we cant pay the monthly rent religiously, sometimes we asked for an extension ( seek loans from relatives ) just to pay the rent. The owner of this apartment lives in the US, she has a caretaker that manage the apartment ( sort of ) or does the singil. Now it comes to a point, na masyado na kami pinapahiya ng care taker when she tries to collect the rent of the apartment that even my 7yo daughter naapektuhan na to the point na minsan umiiyak ang anak namin just thinking pa papalayasin kami sa bahay. We are given until the end of december to vacate the apartment, which we need to comply. My questions are :

    a. We still have outstanding balance-do we need to settle it before we can vacate the apartment? or can i just issue a promissory note for that? Do they have the right to with hold any of our things, or appliances as a collateral to the balance that we have?

    b. If we're going to Barangay can I tell the Barangay that they dont have any business permit or barangay permit to operate the business? Can they forcefully collect the balance since given they dont have any legal premise ( no business permit - meaning illegal business, as what i understand it ).

    Thank you so much Lawyers!!

    If you're sure that the apartment doesn't have a permit, then this is what I'll do. Just leave the apartment, bring all your belongings, and don't worry about the balance. If they stop you, tell them you'll report them to the BIR for non-payment of taxes. Make sure it's clear to them tax evasion is criminal and so they can get some jail time for that. You get 10% of whatever amount of tax liability the BIR eventually gets to collect as a sort of "finders fee". Plus, tell them you'll have the place closed down by reporting them to the city government for operating without a business permit, and probably other violations like not following the building code (e.g. fire safety, etc.).
