Back To The 70's

Recommended Posts

Now that you mentioned it yeah you're right, Three Stooges did air on Channel 2 during martial law. It wasn't ABS-CBN yet. It had been re-named BBC during the Marcos regime. That aired everyday at 6 pm if memory serves me right.

But The Three Stooges originally aired on Channel 7 in the 60's. You say you were a member of Uncle Bob's Lucky 7 Club? Then you must know he used to commute using his Hughs 300 chopper. One time he landed on top of the building where my family used to hold business. Bob Stewart was a business partner of my uncle and he came to pick him up to visit some land in Batangas. When I heard he was coming to pick up my uncle, I waited for his arrival on the roofdeck of the building. When he arrived, he got off the chopper, went up to me (I was about 10 years old at that time) and asked me if I wanted to take a ride on his chopper. Of course I said yes.

So here I am with my idol...just the two of us sitting inside his chopper. This was supposed to be my very first ever helicopter ride. He started the engines and just before the chopper took off, my mom came rushing and pulled me out of the chopper!!! He he he. Opportunity down the drain. I still chide my mom today for ruining what could have been an experience i would never forget!

Nice story. =)

Sir Muttley, isn't your avatar taken from the 70's cartoon series "The Wacky Races?" I remember Dick Dastardly, his side-kick muttley, Penelope Pitstop, The Arkansas Chuggerbug, etc. among the characters in that cartoon. I used to watched that cartoon series as a child.

I loved the way Muttley laughed. Super cute. He he he.

I remember The Anthill Mob there, a group of midget gangsters in a gangster sedan. Yun mga paa lang nila nagpapatakbo sa kotse

Thank you. (snicker-snicker-snicker)

I remember that cartoon show. I always watched that every 4 pm on Channel 7. If I remember right, it used to be shown every day. The teams I remember were the Scooby's, the Yogi's and the bad guys. I forgot what you call the bad guys. Haha!

"Wacky Races" was shown on RPN-9 and "Scooby Doo" on BBC-2.

I think the one you're talking about that was aired on GMA-7 was "Laff-A-Lympics".

After "Wacky Races", me and my master Dick Dastardly had our own spin-off series "Dastardly & Muttley" where we always go after this stupid carrier pigeon. The Anthill Mob and Penelope Pitstop had their own spin-off series too - "The Perils of Penelope Pitstop" (the villain was The Hooded Claw, voiced by Paul Lynde) and was shown on IBC-13.

Laff a Lympics? I believe that was Wacky Races. It was shown in the late 70s, around 4 or 5 pm.

Laff-A-Lympics parang celebrity olympic games. Yung team ni Scooby Doo are the Scooby Doobies. Yung team ni Yogi Bear are the Yogi Yahooeys. Tapos yung mga villains The Really Rottens (me and Dastardly had look-a-likes there, Mumbly and Dread Baron).

Here's one of those Wacky Races episodes. It's like going back in time for me....

I remember Ralph Macchio (the original Karate Kid) who guested in Eight is Enough, from then on he starred in The Outsiders directed by Francis Ford Coppola then the Karate Kid films. I also remember Leif Garrett who was a teen heart-throb in the late 1970s, he also starred in The Outsiders whose character was killed early on.

They also had Gulliver's Travels and my all time favorite Wait till Your Father Gets Home.

The father's voice in 'Wait till your father gets home' was so iconic in the guise of Tom Bosley....he then went on as Howard Cunningham, father of Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) in HAPPY DAYS. Ron Howard went on to become one of Hollywood's top directors

Yes I know. His voice I shall never forget. May he rest in peace.

Names of entertainers that come to mind when talking about the 70's include John Travolta (Saturday Night Fever), Sissy Spacek (Carrie), The Bee Gees (Barry Gibb, Andy Gibb), Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder (Young Frankensein), Charlton Heston (Solyent Green), Robbie Benson (One on One), Marlon Brando (Apocalypse Now/The Godfather) , Robert DeNiro (The Deer Hunter/The Godfather), Linda Blair (The Exorcist), Gene Hackman (The French Connection), Richard Dreyfuss (Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind), Sylvester Stallone (Rocky), Al Pacino (The Godfather/Dog Day Afternoon)

One of the cars that defined this decade was the old Toyota Corona and Corolla. rolleyes.gif

Yeah. But there were other brands as well that were common during this era. I learned to drive in a Dodge Colt, the forerunner of the Misubishi Galant. Also common back then were Ford Cortinas and Escorts, Mercedes Benz cars, Toranas, Volkswagen Beetles and Brazilias, Isuzu Bellets, Geminis, Mitsubishi Lancers, Toyota Celicas, etc. Mostly cars with only 4 cylinders with engine displacements of 1600 cc or below.

"Book 'em, Danno!"

Astig yung hairstyle ni Jack Lord.

The current version of Hawaii Five-0 that is currently on air is quite good, too.

I actually got to see Jack Lord, James MacArthur and the other cast members shooting an episode at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in 1978. Was lucky enough to get this close to snap his picture. Crowds were trying to get close and police and security were trying to create a "cordon sanitaire" for the crew. I happened to be behind the police and the guards who didn't notice me. He he he...post-355512-0-41683400-1362057356.jpg

Hawaii Five-0 was one of my staple tv shows as a kid. I think this was on Channel 9. My memory is muddled so correct me if I'm wrong.

Bro I think I'm older than you but I also don't remember which channel aired this program. Perhaps Bro Muttley remembers. I now have the complete dvd collection and have even identified the exact episode that I saw being filmed. I remember the scenes and how Jack Lord, James MacArthur and another actor (can't remember his name) kept on repeating the sequence over and over again until the director was finally satisfied with the take. Imagine just to film a 20 second scene stretched over 15 minutes!

I even stood beside Jack Lord. Man the guy was tall. Probably 6'2 with high heeled shoes. Yeah he was wearing high heels to make him look taller I'm about 5'8 with shoes on and he was standing a head taller than me. Seemed like a nice guy. He even bowed to the crowd to acknowledge their clapping after the 20 second scene was finally approved by the director.

My favorite comedy series was Three's Company starring John Ritter, Suzanne Sommers, and Joyce de Witt. I think the writers really had a great sense of humor and the actors were excellent. I also have the complete dvd collection. Had to buy the Hawaii Five O and Three's Company dvd's overseas because they're not available here locally. Cost me an arm and a leg but I think I'm happy that I have these in my collection.

What I miss were the penekula of the era. Or was that part of the '80s?

It's a pity the producers/distributors didn't have the foresight to save copies for later generations :(

penekula came out in the 80s. it won't stand a chance in the clutches of martial law. Tata Esteban was one prolific director of penekulas. Mark Joseph starred in many penekulas.
