Back To The 70's

Welcome to the thread brawler 201 and cheers to Mang Bert "Tawa" Marcelo. The best spokesman for San Miguel Pale Pilsen and one of our very best comedians.

"San Miguel Beer. Isang tunay na kaibigan. Hindi mo man mautangan, pwede namang utangin." :D

Also one of our all time favorite kiskis or sweet party music. I have the 2 versions of reasons before. The one is the long and live version included in the Gratitude album. :thumbsupsmiley:

One of the bands in Tiendesitas can do a mean Reasons number ala Philip Bailey.

I remember the "ISANG PLATITONG MANI" campaign of SMB where Elorde, Parica and other national champions...I think that started a slew of Ads using endorsers, yata.

Another AD i remember was a Boy sweeping the floor and the tag line was "IBALIK ANG SWERTI" ano bang Bank iyon? PS Bank ba?

I also remember seeing Ads of MEMORIAL PARKS (notable was Manila Memorial) during those times which I thought was off....I can't imagine how TV ads of Columbariums (kasi ang dami-dami na nila) would be at current time(s) back to back with the many, many, of Shampoo TV ADs with the signature head "throws" ....what a laugh!!!

That's the trouble of a very strong punch line. Nalimutan na yung product or brand. The same goes with the shampoo commercials. All those cellophane looking shiny hair. I dig curly hair. :P

Pero yung White Castle Whiskey, San Miguel Beer and Marlboro. You remember the ad and the product. :thumbsupsmiley:

I think Lux was the first brand which used a local celebrity endorser - Amalia Fuentes.

To refresh your memories, the "Ibalik ang Swerti" was the ad of Interbank.

As Storm mentioned, the punchline was indeed strong, but so much for the product... since Interbank is now defunct.

Thanks for the welcome Ms. Storm. As I've said. I'm not really from the '70's but I am a keen observer of pop culture and have the memory of an elephant so I remeber everything. I hope I can contribute more.

On the side, any of you guys wore vests or "chalekos" during the '70's to match your bell bottoms? I remember my pre school uniform to include a vest with a lame tiger stripes design. School officials were probably smoking weed when they decided on that.

The guy in that ad was "Estong". That ad line was so popular that they used it as a title for a Nora Aunor movie with the Reycards and with Estong in a cameo/guest role. He only had a one line speaking role. His one and only line? Of course: "Eh di..ibalik ang sweti...".

Yup star b911 ...totally OUTRAGEOUS !! but was believed by so many.

You hit the nail on the head once more, AM! :thumbsupsmiley:

...if M.C. was your 70's GF (as such veiled declaration), then it must be YOU :)

M.C. and Moi? In my wildest dreams! She was a friend's GF, not mine. 'Di niya 'ko type...so it must've been HIM! :)

Para hindi OT, Mel Brooks also had a funny Western movie, Blazing Saddles, that came out around 1974. The film starred Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder. :D

Comedies like Blazing Saddles, Animal House, Slap Shot, and Caddyshack could not be re-made in today's era of "political correctness". These were some of the "stoner" film classics of those days.

Pero yung White Castle Whiskey, San Miguel Beer and Marlboro. You remember the ad and the product. :thumbsupsmiley:

The White Castle ads usually had a brownish Lady Godiva sitting on an malnourished-looking horse, while the SMB ad I remember most was the one with Bert Marcelo and Amang Parica. Marlboro naman...."Come to where the flavor is...come to Marlboro Country" (tapos, pasok ang theme from The Magnificent 7). Geez...those were the days when cowboy movies were straight. :boo:

Eh, yung sa Coke?......"I'd like to teach the world to sing...in perfect har-mo-nee...I'd like to buy the world a Coke...and keep it com-pa-nee..." Hard to believe that ad spawned a hit single, but I suppose it could have happened to Yoyoy Villame's rendition of Pioneer Epoxy (paborito ng bayan).

That last line made me laugh! Hahaha  That's what we get when a Chinese director tries his hand at making an American Western. Oh well.... This is probably OT pero about Pinoy Westerns (as if we had a West to conquer), I remember an old Jun Aristorenas movie the title of which I can't recall anymore. Anyway, all through the first hour or so of the movie, he and his enemies were on horseback and shooting at each other. Pero towards the end of the movie, at its climax, the bad guys suddenly show up on Owner-type jeeps! :boo:  How messed up is that?!?

Para hindi OT, one of the great and last John Wayne movies came out in the mid-70s: "The Shootist".

The Ford Escort was a line of fine sporty sedans --- the 1.6 Brenda, 2.0 Ghia, RS2000 and the Zakspeed

the Ford Cortina 1.6 and 2.0 Ghia were known for their excellent ride... followed by the Ford Granada in the late 70s

Mazda RX-7 with the Wankel Rotary Engine

Escort purists had to have the "Weber Twin Side 40s" carburetor

Nodalo's 4-2-1 or 4-1 headers

Minilite Mag Wheels

And who can forget the "Cherry Bomb" exhaust mufflers for VWs

The trouble with my handle being the popular X-Men character and my avatar at the same time is that a lot of people here thought I'm a woman or maybe a lesbian.

The truth about the handle is that my first company has "storm" in it and my favorite bowling ball then was my Storm El Niño.

Speaking of Western Movies, I like Westworld and Futureworld with Yul Bryner as the gunslinger reprising his Magnificent Seven role. And the great spaghetti westerns starring the great Clint Eastwood. --- Hang Em High for a Fistful of Dollars (2 movies in one) :zorro: :thumbsupsmiley:

The white castle ladies wore red 2 piece string bikinis.

And speaking of Yoyoy --- 70s ba yung mag-exercise tayo tuwing umaga?

But his song about the Philippine History was definitely 70s.

Hi Bodhisattva 1000 - so glad to be back!

Na time warp nga ako - time warp sa toxic na trabaho!

Looking forward to Storm's blowout! ;-)

I missed the Santana roots concert - rats! Kahit wala si Devadip I would have wanted to see those old fogies rip it up on stage. Tsk.

Here's an unmistakable 70's symbol - the Pioneer KP-500 with separate bass and treble knobs! What an unsightly head unit but boy did it sound good...

Hi to JT, Pinoy, Magaling and the rest of the 70s people.

Hi augustmoon :)

Yup, it's quieted down a notch, but also better time management is the key. I try to work more hours offline.

One thing that hasn't changed at all since the 70s are our so-called local variety shows. It's ironic they call them such when the format is basially the same for the past 40 years. Oh well, if it sells....

Jingle magazines eventually became Twinkle, di ba? Dun ako natuto mag guitara. Speaking of guitars, hows pareng eight-track doing? Pareng Masi and Mareng Liberty?

haven't heard from 16track for a long time now - he's not even posting in the Blues thread like before - he's the only one missing now - after you and pareng sallybogna have materialized already. Masi is neck-deep in work, I believe...

This Santana Roots concert - were they the same guys Santana had when he had that memorable spot in Woodstock? Madami na kasi silang group changes eh. I love that '69 lineup - they look so raw and raunchy then....

speaking of Bert Tawa, aside from his Isang platitong Mani , he had also an ad where he says, Pupulbusin ko and dibdib mo!

I can't recall for what product that was....

I saw Blazing Saddles on DVD and I should say that it has not dated that well - medyo hindi na maganda and dating ng mga patawa, not unlike the Peter Sellers' Pink Panther movies which I still so thouroughly enjoy up to now. And speaking of Peter Sellers, I still remember that line in the Dr. Strangelove movie - Don't fight in here, gentlemen! This is the war room! :D

To all the 70s audiophiles in this thread, here's something to keep you busy this weekend:

Can you identify the song and the artist from where the following lines have been lifted (most of them are quite easy):

“Something happened along the way and yesterday was all we had."

"Can it be that it was all so simple then? Or has time re-written every line?"

“We got a thing goin' on."

"I need you by me, beside me, to guide me."

“They want you as a new recruit!"

"Don't worry that it's not good enough for anyone else to hear."

"I think it was the 4th Of July."

"I close my eyes. Only for the moment then the moment's gone."

"And they were dancin' and singin' and movin' to the groovin'."

“This song is for you, filled with gratitude and love. God bless you!"

“So please believe me, my heart is in your hands. And I'll be missing you."

"You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one."

"I believe in miracles, since you came along."

"Are we in love? Or just friends? Is this my beginning? Or is this the end?!"

"and you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun"

"The night is young, and full of possibilities."

"I really want to see you. I really want to be with you."

"So I'd like to know where you got the notion."

Well, I know it's kind of late. I hope I didn't wake you."

"When I was young, I never needed anyone. Making love was just for fun, those days are gone."

"My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim. I had to stop for the night."

"I wanna hold you 'til I die, 'til we both break down and cry."

“You grew up right in the subways, running with people, up in Harlem, down on Broadway”

"Stay with me while we grow old and we will live each day in the springtime."

“Will you disappear from the earth just like Atlantis did?”

“Conventionality belongs to yesterday."

"Satisfaction came in a chain reaction."

"Who can make a sunrise? Sprinkle it with dew."

"I tried hard to forget it but I know my mind won't let it."

“All right now, go! Walk out the door!"

"There's one perfect fit and, sugar, this one is it."

"Loving both of you is breaking all the rules."

"Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore."

"I know it's late. I know you're weary. I know your plans don't include me."

"I will never, no, no, never love again."

"Grow apple trees and honey bees and snow-white turtle doves."

"These little town blues are melting away."

"You come on like a dream, peaches and cream, lips like strawberry wine."

"Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo."

"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi."

“The words will never show the you I’ve come to know”

"He takes a ladder, steals the stars from the sky, puts on Sinatra and starts to cry."

“We can try to understand the New York Times’ effect on man.”

“Electricity starts to flow and my indicator starts to glow.”

“Half of us are satisfied, half of us in need”

“I don’t think that I can take it, ‘cause it took so long to bake it.”

"Spirits rise and their dance is unrehearsed"

And finally, our favorite make out song:

"Please tell me yes, and don’t say no, honey, not tonight."

Kaya nyo ba ito??? :boo: :boo:
