sliderule
Sino ngang coach ng U-tex noon, si Manotoc ba? Ako, favorite ko ang Crispa.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Correct! Tommy Manotoc nga, with Danny Florencio, Jimmy "the Iron Man" Noblezada (yata), Lim eng Beng, Rudolf Kutch and other obscure players whose names I can't remember. Quote Link to comment
sliderule
It's a strange thing, but if you visit the Crispa-Toyota thread, you'll see that many Toyota fans claim Danny Florencio as theirs since he played for Toyota in the PBA. But I've always thought of Danny Florencio as a Redmanizer, because he played for Crispa during the old MICAA. In fact, Danny Florencio was unstoppable for Crispa during "Black Sunday." That was when Jawo and Big Boy Reynoso clobbered referees Cruz and Obias. I believe this happened in 1971. Because of the suspension that followed, Jawo and Big Boy were not able to join our team to the 1972 Munich Olympics ... the last time we were able to send a basketball team to Olympic competition. As for Rudy Soriano, he was often referred to as "Plasticman" (after the comic book character) because of the way he could twist his body when making a lay-up against good defenders. Rudy Soriano was often a member of our national team to the Pesta Sukan. He's also famous for that punch that broke Mon Fernandez's nose.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Galing ng memory mo JT! Such detail, bow! I don't agree with Totota fans on Florencio...for me he'll be a U-tex Wrangler forever. Sorry ha, but I'm no Crispa or Toyota fan. They dominated the league too much. I always like the 3rd place team, which I think was U-Tex. They would (seemingly) play sub-par in one of the leagues, so they'd be allowed to have 2 imports in the next, hence their rise to fame. Come to think of it, madaya nga pala ang U-Tex ;-) Yeah..the Plasticman! I heard somewhere that Rudy's down on his luck and is going thru hard times? I really miss Tembong Melencio. Whoever knifed him should have a special place in hell. Quote Link to comment
storm
Speaking of Florencio, he's best time was during his MICAA stint with YCO painters. Kaya lang tipong 60s pa yata nun. hehehehe. Goodnight Peeps. Quote Link to comment

They were the 3rd best in the MICAA behind Crispa, Meralco, then Yco, Mariwasa and Yutivo bringing up the rear. Ay, sorry OT na tayo....60's na ito. Quote Link to comment

They were the 3rd best in the MICAA behind Crispa, Meralco, then Yco, Mariwasa and Yutivo bringing up the rear.<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Some time during the very early 70s, I was fortunate enough to watch a Meralco-Yco game at the Araneta Coliseum. During those days, the seats were made of wood. They weren't very comfortable, but they made for greater capacity. The place was packed. Yco was among the top teams then, with Freddie Webb, Sonny Reyes, Ed Ocampo, Egay Gomez, Elias Tolentino, Botchok de los Santos, Marte Samson, Joy Cleofas, etc. The atmosphere at the Araneta was incredible. In one incident, Meralco's import Presley elbowed Freddie Webb (unintentionally) who then fell and covered his face with both hands for minutes while everyone looked on. My sister was furious. She was for Yco. I was for Meralco. Edited September 14, 2005 by jt2003 Quote Link to comment

Ano ngang team noon sina Manny Paner at Martirez? Quote Link to comment

Manny Paner battled with the likes of Presley (6'11") and Cowart (6'7") for the rebounds, even though he was only 6'2". Their teammates included Estoy Estrada, Rolly Marcelo, Dave Regullano, and Velasco. In the 70s, there used to be a popular magazine called "Cage King." Its first featured player was Jaworski. The others that followed were Jun Papa, Larry Mumar, Manny Paner (I think), Bogs Adornado, and Jimmy Mariano. This was all before the PBA. Quote Link to comment
storm
There was a magazine which featured the race between Webb and martirez. I forgot the magazine but I think Webb won. Edited September 15, 2005 by storm Quote Link to comment

sliderule
Quote Link to comment

No. 10 was for the great shooters. No. 4 belonged to the team captains. As for the late great, great, great Tembong Melencio, he remains the only player I've seen (and that includes NBA greats) who would finish a fastbreak lay-up using just one hand. I mean, off the dribble, he would take the ball in his right hand (no support from his left) and put the ball in. He was unbelievable. Quote Link to comment

bods1000
yung mga imports ngayon walang sinabi sa mga imports nuon. Those were really great ones. Sina Presley, Tom Cowart, Paul Scranton, Glenn McDonald, Byron "Snake" Jones, Billy Ray Bates, of course you could include Norman Black. There was also Michael Hackett of Toyota who I remember scored 100 points in a game (?).The battles between great opposing imports were truly classic....ngayon, parang revolving-door, bargain-basement types na mga import na nakukuha. Now you see them, now you don't - can't even remember their names kahit nung last season lang naglaro.. Quote Link to comment
jt2003
Actually, pareng Bods, Michael Hackett played with Anejo/Ginebra, not with Toyota. The really great Toyota import was Andy Fields (although 80s na 'to). Snake Jones played for both Crispa and Toyota. As for Crispa, their really great import during the 70s (before Billy Ray Bates) was Cyrus Mann. Quote Link to comment
