MMA Facts Part 3

UFC 1:

- Zane Frasier was invited because he beat up Frank Dux in the lobby at a Karate competition.

-Gerarld Gordeau was invited because he was from the same gym as Ernesto Hoost and the organizers couldn’t afford Hoost.

-Ken Shamrock was recruited after one of his students had applied, they decided they wanted the teacher instead

-Big John McCarthy applied, but was told that Royce would be the only one to represent Jiu-Jitsu. He could enter after Royce was done with it.

-One of Teila Tuli’s teeth that Gordeau kicked out just missed John McCarthy’s wife when it flew into the crowd. She got up and left the event immediately.

-Art Jimmerson tried to back out when he found out the details of the event but they threatened to sue him because they had already started promoting him.

- The promoters considered adding an electric fence and an alligator-filled moat around the Octagon.

Other Events:

- At Vale Tudo Japan '95, a 154 lb Japanese fighter named Yuki Nakai took on UFC 1 finalist Gerard Gordeau in the first round. Gordeau gouged his eyes so bad that Yuki suffered permanent blindness in one of them. He still won the fight by heel hook and his next fight by armbar before losing to Rickson Gracie in the finals. Rickson said after that he purposely never hit Yuki in the face out of respect. Yuki refused interviews for many years out of fear that it would have a negative impact on MMA.

- At UFC 9, Zane Frasier kneed Cal Worsham while he was running at him in the chest breaking three ribs, one punctured his lung narrowly missing his heart which was badly bruised. In the hospital he was told that his survival was in question.

To this day it is the worst injury ever incurred at a UFC event. Worsham still won the fight

- At UFC 12, Tank Abbot got into a backstage fight with Wallid Ismail

- At UFC 28, Josh Barnett and Gan McGee had the first and only UFC Super HW fight

- At UFC 36, Matt Hughes fought Shooto’s former MW (167 lb) Champ, Sakurai, because the current Champ had trouble getting a visa. The Champ was Anderson Silva.

- At UFC 39, Ricco Rodriguez stopped Randy Couture, making it the ONLY fight in UFC history (as of UFC 95) to be stopped in the 5th round

- At UFC 47, Mike Kyle bit Wes Sims on the chest during their fight.

-At Vale Tudo Japan ’97, Enson Inoue was DQ'd against F. Shamrock because his brother Egan ran into the ring

At PRIDE 9, Matt Serra’s opponent was injured by the pyrotechnics and the match was called off. Serra was never invited back.

At PRIDE 22, during the stare down, Rampage gave Igor Vovchanchyn a note that from “his mother” that said “Please don’t hurt my son”

- At PRIDE Critical Countdown Absolute, during the stare down when the ref finished the rules, Josh Barnett said to Mark Hunt “and no flying ass drops”

- At PRIDE Final Conflict 2004, Big Nog was stuck in traffic, so ‘lil Nog did his walk in for the opening ceremony

- PRIDE's "Shockwave" is not translated correctly. The real name is "The Man Festival"

- At Shooto 3/18, Hansen threw his mouth piece into the crowd to celebrate his victory…and hit Caol Uno’s mom in the head

-At IFC 11, Rich Franklin vs. Aaron Brink was ruled a “no contest” when Brink got his leg stuck between the mat and the cage

- At ADCC, Jeff Monson stripped bare naked (in front of everyone) in protest to the judge’s decision to DQ him. You can use a can opener for positioning, but not as a submission, his opponent (pe de Pano, I think) tapped when he did it so they ruled it a submission attempt and DQ'd him. He maintained he was positioning.

Gracies:

- The Gracie family first got noticed when Rorion did a 1989 Playboy article claiming to be the baddest man on the planet and issuing the "Gracie Challenge"

- Royce was the Gracie chosen for UFC 1 for two reasons. They wanted someone smaller to prove a point, and Rickson and Rorion had a big falling out over Rickson teaching from his home instead of at the Academy.

- Rorion Gracie was the fight scene coordinator for Lethal Weapon 1 (triangle at the end)

- Due to his uncontrollable temper, Ryan was reportedly banned by the family from fighting until he got treatment and became more stable.

- Tito called out Renzo Gracie after becoming the >200 lb Champ

- Rickson does have an official loss. At the 1993 US Sambo Championships he lost to Ron Tripp via uchi-mata in 45 seconds. Rickson claims he was misinformed of the rules

- Although Rickson has long been considered the family Champ, Rickson says Royler actually has the best technique in the family and only beats him because of his size advantage.

- Rickson actually only has 2 wins by armbar (both Takada fights) “Rickson by Choke” would be more accurate

Other Talents:

- Dan Severn is also writer for Penthouse

- Aaron Brink is a former porn star

- Jeff Monson worked as a family and children’s counselor

- Matt Serra is the first American that the Gracie family awarded a black belt to.

- Gary Goodridge is a world Champ in arm-wrestling and claims to beat 1,000 people in a row in Japan.

- Egan Inoue was a World Champion Racquetball player before competing in JJ and MMA

-Pete Spratt led the NCAA in receiving yards one season while in college.

- Keith Jardine worked as a debt collector, bounty hunter, football coach and even a miner before fighting

- Mirko Filipovic, besides being a member of the Croatian Anti-terrorism squad, also served in the Croatian Parliament and was signed by the Croatian football team Cibalia.

- Phil Baroni won body-building competitions as a teenager

damn straight! very exciting Silva fight even if he lost that one

am i seeing this? bro, you gotta read my post again. no offense meant but you gotta read it again.or better yet, let me elaborate it.i said i find his fights boring. i didnt say he's not an exciting fighter. youre the one who said it. im amazed you interpret my post like that. its different bro, boring fights to exciting fighter? again, i said i find his fight boring. i didnt say he's not an exciting fighter. its my opinion. as a fan i think i have the right to say which fights are boring or not.no need for you to refresh my memory about his fights in pride. cmon man youre putting me in a spot here. i never said it bro. baka magalit mga silva fans. :D peace out.

check out what i quoted you on man, you said you find Silva's "fights" boring, so as much as the fights are boring the common denominator in those fights are Anderson Silva being involved, so please don't tell me i'm putting words in your mouth by me saying you don't find Silva an exciting fighter, because that's what comes to mind man.

but, hey, to each his own chief... you don't have to worry about some other dude saying your wrong or your right because everyone is entitled to their own opinion yeah? if you misunderstood what i posted a couple of days back, then what i meant was, the dude's got a lot of exciting fights man.

BTW mr corpsegrinder, yeah you can't use a can opener as a choke because it's not really chocking your opponent but more of "cranking" them and i believe that in no-gi or even in gi submission grappling cranking is a no-no

http://www.ocmma.net/mma-images/mma-mounts/guard-position/submissions-from-guard/can-opener-from-top_lg.jpg

can opener yep a neck crank alright, legal in MMA illegal in submission grappling

i think this is similar to the move that Abbott used on Steve Jennum way back 1995

Coleman used this on Masaaki Sataake back in PRIDE, too. I got caught twice, hurts like hell but funny when you look back at it.

UFC 119: Mirko 'Cro Cop' vs Frank Mir booked for Sept. 25 with 'Minotauro' Nogueira hurt

Looks like it wasn't meant to be.

The upcoming rematch between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir, originally scheduled for UFC 119 in Indianapolis, Indiana, has reportedly been called off after "Minotauro" was forced to withdraw from the Sept. 25 fight card due to an undisclosed injury.

Fighters Only brought word of the change in plans earlier today, and also reports that famed Croatian striker Mirko Filipovic is being tagged as "Big Nog's" replacement.

hey, read my post again. i clearly said i find his fights boring. i never said he's not an exciting fighter. thats two different issues. its totally different.

if youre saying that silva is the common denominator because he is the fighter involved then you got it all wrong. and you dont understand what i posted.

is it just because i never mentioned that hes a great fighter means hes not great fighter?

eto isa pang example. randy couture is a great fighter but his fights are boring. lagi lang siya tumutulak sa cage at dirty boxing at take down. all of his fights ganon lang. nothing new. he even got away with a controversial decision win over brandon vera. na eenjoy mo ba pag lumalaban siya?

si anderson silva lagi lang pasayaw sayaw sisimple ng suntok nakaka excite ba panoorin? hindi ba sumasagi sa isip mo na no match na mga kalaban niya sa division niya kaya boring na siyang panoorin?

and yeah to each his own. you say what you want and put words in my mouth. thats pretty fine. i still find his fights boring.

hey you might wanna read prior to his fight with sonnen, dana white isnt amused with his "exciting fights" especially ufc 112 (silva vs maia)

i'm amazed at someone saying Anderson Silva isn't an exciting fighter... check out his fights before he fought for the UFC, one good example is the Tony Fryklund elbow upercut finish in cagerage man and of course that flying knee VS Carlos Newton in PRIDE

maybe you mean he hasn't been exciting as of late? i'm not Anderson silva's biggest fan bro, but he does have exciting fights man

This is a forum. Everyone has a right to speak their mind let me just say this though.

What's boring to someone maybe exciting to someone else. In a spectator sport like MMA usually to a 'casual' fan, somebody who is not familiar with the intricacies of the game something such as range fighting (as what anderson silva does) or engaging in the clinch and dirty boxing (as what randy couture does) may seem boring. But to some people who actually practice and actively engage in training and competing in MMA it seems just as exciting.

People who haven't been there don't know just how much of a chess game the clinch is or just how much detail goes into counter striking and all that stuff that a general fan deems to be boring. Guys you have to understand that this is a forum and each of us who are here come from different backgrounds and thus view the sport of MMA in different ways. There are casual fans and then there are those who are really into it. There are those who are fans but have such a deep admiration of the game that they go out of their way to really analyze it and those who actually train in it. And mind you I am not talking about those posers who just drop by the MMA gym every once in a while to claim they're such badasses I mean those who really train in it, explore all the little details of the game and have even gone in the ring or the cage and know what it's like being in there.

So chill out guys. To each his own. and with that let me just say that I do not find Anderson Silva's fights boring... he may have played it safe a couple of times but heck 'flying knees', 'spinning elbows', that switch out he hit on marquardt before he pounded him out (when all the while marquardt was supposed to be the better wrestler), and how he finished Sonnen (though I was rooting for Sonnen) I would not call that stuff boring at all. You can gather a bunch of seasoned muay thai practitioners and ask them if they've ever even landed a flying knee in a fight and some would even say they've been lucky if they've ever landed a single one ever... while Anderson seems to be doing it all the time.

Perhaps people are just so tired of him being this dominant that's why they say he has gotten boring. Tell you what I would love to see Jon Fitch go up to 185 and take a shot at him... After what Sonnen just did to him I think Fitch has a legitimate shot at beating him.

love the mma facts bro CG!

Randy Couture has 19 UFC fights, 15 of them title fights. Since December 1997, only one of his UFC fights has not been for a title.

this really makes me wonder.

15 title fights?

while some fighters need streak of wins before they get 1?

if they were in a class i'd say he's the teacher's pet!

don't get me wrong, i love randy, but Toney's got a point when he said

"Man, what kind of [expletive] sport is this if y’all call a guy barely over .500 a legend?"

Hehe. well there have been instances where Randy had been given a title shot without getting in line or was only required to fight a couple of fights before being given a title shot. But mind you in these fights remember he wasn't expected to win, he was supposed to be the underdog.

Case in point after dropping to the light heavyweight division after losing the heavyweight title to Rico Rodriguez he was asked to fight Chuck Lidell (who was on a tear that time and nobody wanted to fight) and then Tito Ortiz. Nobody expected him to win either one of those fights but he did so and in exceptional fashion.

When he came back to heavyweight on the other hand, he was immediately granted a title shot by Dana against Tim Sylvia and again he wasn't expected to win but he did in a 5 round domination of the former champion. Yeah he might have been given somewhat of a pass at the title a couple of times during his illustrious career but I think it is due to the respect that he has earned over the years for always seeming to come out on top despite all types of adversity.

James Toney the way he keeps running his mouth I hope he gets schooled by the Natural come the next UFC.
