Russia to buy $2.5B in PH agri produce

Russia committed to buy up to a staggering $2.5 billion worth of Philippine fruit, grains or vegetables during last Saturday’s bilateral discussions between President Duterte and Vladimir Putin, officials said on Sunday.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said the Russian side agreed “immediately” to a proposal for the importation of Philippine fruit and other agricultural products in the next 12 months.

This dwarfs the $80 million worth of exports the Philippines currently ships to Russia every year, he said.

“We were talking of what they could buy from us, especially agricultural products, but nothing was specified. But I understand we supply them with a huge quantity of bananas… and mangoes. With these kinds of discussions, these present more trading opportunities between us,” Lopez said.

Lopez said Putin also offered to help the Philippines through investments in energy and infrastructure.

Lopez said the Philippine leader’s bilateral discussion with Xi also bore plenty of fruit for the country.

“I took note of a report that a Chinese delegation recently closed a transaction for $100 million worth of fruit from the Philippines, primarily bananas. That involves 100,000 tons only for one transaction,” he said.

He said that was a huge deal considering the Philippines shipped about 700,000 tons of bananas to China every year.

I hope these deals do materialize. For a time China practically closed its market to Philippine bananas because as a soft retaliation in the West Philippine Sea dispute. Bananas exported to China were destroyed by Chinese authorities because they supposedly "did not meet quality standards". I just came from a banana producing province yesterday and my counterparts there told me the local producers are working to increase production considering China opened its market again to the Philippines.

And I hope Russia's commitment for the $2.5 billion worth of produce is not a limited offer for the next 12 months only. I'm not sure if the Philippine producers can increase production by 3000% in the next 12 months to meet the $2.5 billion threshold from a current export level of $80 million.

Foreign investors keen on doing business in PHL — PEZA chief

Foreign investors, including members of royal families in the Middle East, are interested in leasing lease land in the Philippines to be converted into Special Economic Zones (SEZs), according to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA).

PEZA Director General Charito "Ching" B. Plaza told a forum she discussed with Sheikh Al Thani of Qatar the establishment of a halal food processing hub in Davao.

A foreign group is also interested in developing a million-hectare agriculture land, with the Philippines getting a portion of the profits, Plaza noted in a statement on Tuesday. The group was thinking of building schools and putting in place social development projects in the area.

The PEZA official noted she has proposed a defense industry SEZ with Russa, China, Israel and South Korea to boost the economy and strengthen Philippine national defense and manufacturing capabilities.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) data showed foreign direct investment in the country registered net inflows of $5.4 billion in the first eight months of the year, up 71.1 percent from a year earlier.

I think you might be referring to DA, and not DAR...

ever heard of a famous term before na "noynoying"??

The term was largely used early in the term of PNoy but lost traction by the middle of his term. By the end of his term, he had an approval rating higher than previous outgoing Presidents and the economic growth of the country on the rise.

Again, it's all a matter of leadership style. PNoy aims before he shoots, while Du30 shoots from the hip. Both have pros and cons. The first is slow but more accurate, or quick with the higher likelihood of missing the mark.

Mahalaga na rin dito yung trade infrastructure like road, railways or by sea para maging efficient ang delivery system ng mga farmers.

As usual mukhang maraming seen zone na nanamn

Precisely. We need to accelerate building of infrastructure to speed up countryside agricultural development.

We need :

  • farm-to-market roads,
  • farm produce trading posts,
  • cold storage facilities for vegetables, fruits, and meat products,
  • drying and storage facilities for harvested grains,
  • provincial and regional farm produce database system and computerized farm-to-market logistics and distribution system
  • modern farming techniques education programs,
  • mechanization of farming activities
  • participation of higher-educated personnel in farming operations

Sec. Diokno has been advocating these strategies for decades. Now that he is leading the economic planning of duterte administration, we have hope.

Hindi ba parehong posisyon din ang hawak niya nun kapanahunan ni Erap? Same plans as well ... most if not all.

In other words, ano ang sa tingin mong "success factor" ngayon.

During his short stint with Erap, several significant agriculture programs were implemented, including setting up of the Carabao Research Center, distribution of genetically upgraded carabaos breeds to farmers, construction of farm-to-market roads, and introduction of new high yield rice and corn varieties.

In Diokno's initial six months as economic planner of Duterte nailalagay na sa budget ang mga yan. Basahin lang yung 10-point economic agenda, kung may time.

Agricultural production has already increased 3% last quarter and expected to grow further this quarter, compared to zero or negative growth during the same periods in 2015 under your idol abnoy.

Antay ka lang. Five years and six months to go pa.

Yung idol mong abnoy, walang nagawa for six years sa agricultural sector. Ni wala ding nangyari sa mga magsasaka sa Hacienda Luisita.

Duterte: PH open to foreign players in telecoms, power

Philippine companies be warned: President Rodrigo Duterte plans to open the telecommunications and power sectors to foreign companies to ensure better service for Filipinos.

"The only way to make this country move faster to benefit the poor is really to open up communications, the airwaves, and the entire energy sector. My decision now, at this moment is, bubuksan ko ang Pilipinas (I will open the Philippines for business)," said Duterte on Wednesday, November 24.

"It's about time we share the money of the entire country and to move faster, make competition open to all," he added.

He was holding a press conference after arriving from New Zealand, his stopover from Peru where he had attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting.
