Floyd Mayweather Jr. freed from jail after arrest

LAS VEGAS Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been freed from a jail in Las Vegas after posting bail on a felony theft charge stemming from a domestic violence complaint by his ex-girlfriend.

The 33-year-old Mayweather said nothing as he left the Clark County jail Friday after surrendering for booking on a grand larceny charge. Bail was $3,000.

Mayweather's lawyer, Richard Wright, says the charge stems from an allegation that Mayweather took an iPhone from Josie Harris, his ex-girlfriend and mother of three of his children.

Harris made a police complaint and sought a protection order Thursday from a Family Court judge.

She claims Mayweather hit her during a confrontation at her home in Las Vegas.

Wright denies Mayweather committed any crime.

LAS VEGAS (AP) Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been arrested in Las Vegas on a felony theft charge stemming from a domestic violence complaint by his ex-girlfriend.

Mayweather, 33, was booked Friday on a grand larceny charge at the Clark County jail and held on $3,000 bail, Las Vegas police Officer Bill Cassell said.

Mayweather's lawyer, Richard Wright, said Mayweather is accused of taking an iPhone from Josie Harris, his ex-girlfriend and mother of three of his children.

"He surrendered," Wright said, denying the allegations against Mayweather.

"He did not commit any grand larceny," Wright told The Associated Press. "Josie can't find her iPhone. We're attempting to find it or replace it. We'll cooperate in the investigation. We expect to get the matter resolved."

Harris made a police complaint and sought a Family Court protection order Thursday alleging Mayweather pulled her hair, punched her in the head and twisted her arm while she screamed for their children, ranging in age from 7 to almost 11, to call 911.

Police said Thursday that Harris was treated at a Las Vegas hospital for minor injuries.

"Please order Floyd Mayweather to not try and contact me," Harris wrote in an application for a protection order that said the couple separated in May after living together for seven years.

"Floyd has threatened to have other people do harm to me as well and if (there) is a way I can be protected from that please help me," the document says.

Mayweather is undefeated as a professional fighter and is considered one of the sport's top performers, with a record of 41-0 and 25 knockouts. He goes by the nickname "Money" and earned more than $20 million in May from his fight in Las Vegas against "Sugar" Shane Mosley.

Mayweather has also been arrested several times over the years on battery and assault allegations.

We're told Harris is going to court today to get a restraining order against Mayweather.

In 2003 Harris accused Mayweather of punching and kicking her inside a Bentley in Vegas. Charges were filed but dismissed in 2005 after Harris testified she lied to cops because she was angry that Floyd had left her for another woman.

UPDATE: A man who lives near Harris tells TMZ ... this morning at around 5 AM he awakened after hearing "a blood-curdling scream that sounded like someone was being murdered." The man tells us he then saw someone in front of the house and then noticed two cars speeding off.

Mayweather jailed in Las Vegas

By AP (The Philippine Star) Updated December 19, 2010 12:00 AM Comments (0)

LAS VEGAS – Floyd Mayweather Jr. spent a night in a Las Vegas jail before his release Friday on a misdemeanor battery warrant stemming from an allegation that the boxer poked a security guard in the face last month outside his home.

The second arrest in three months for the undefeated prizefighter drew allegations from his lawyer that police and prosecutors overreacted to a minor criminal accusation and that the 33-year-old Mayweather was getting “unequal punitive exaggerated treatment.”

“This is a misdemeanor,” attorney Richard Wright told The Associated Press. He noted that police usually write a ticket for a misdemeanor, or issue a court summons at the jail.

Wright accused District Attorney David Roger of “going out of his way to treat (Mayweather) differently than anyone else.”

Roger didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment.
