Hindi pa tapos ang mission...let's just evaluate after the call

Meanwhile, the team that will carry our flag needs all the support they need. Let's sink or swim with them muna!

Isn't it a better motivation for them that we magnify their 'positives' and hope that modifications needed aren't too late?

not sure about Lutz, though

if kailangan mag-vacate ng spot for Williams' entry, I say kunin nya ung kay Lutz

Lutz plays the SG / SF spot while Williams plays SF / PF slot, Lutz is a big loss if they will do that especially if SG would play a high speed offense and full-court man to man defense. I think there are available slots because of the exits of Rabeh, Jazul and Guevarra (due to the news that they applied for the PBA draft), it might also be better for Ababou and Sison to give way (no offense meant for them or any of their supporters) for the possible insertions of Williams, Taulava, and Douthit. Ryan Reyes may not be needed because of the current plays of Barroca and Casio, Tiu and Lassiter can double up for the point guard position if needed.....

the way i see it toroman likes players that would fit the system ke pro o amateur. nagiging issue na lang ang pagkuha ng gilas ng mga pros. if pwede naman and it would do good to the team why not let them join?

The problem before why this scenario doesn't taken place way back during the creation of the Smart - Gilas are the conflict of interests between the PBA (specially the teams' managements) and SBP. If I remember it correctly the main issue was the reluctance of the PBA teams (as well as the players) to commit their players to SBP's long - term basketball program, thats why the SBP had to resort to develop top collegiate players for the international basketball scene. Other side issues were Eala and PBA's unpleasant parting (bad blood)...

Very true indeed...

Politics is (and has always been) rearing its ugly head in our sports program and development!

Sana lang ay maalala ng ating kapitaga-pitagang mga PBA officials ang history na MICAA and PBA's claim to fame were their past success in international meets (World Cup led by Caloy Loyzaga and Asian Games Medal standings last I remember was the Silver medal finish coached Jaworski). Sayang nga those are the wonder years of the PBA nung nawala na sila sa medal standings ng Asian Games dun na nag-start and downfall and lost of interest ng general public sa basketball. If the PBA and the SBP wont work together on the SG program they will just die a natural death.

Maihahalintulad din dito and sudden surge ng billiard halls due to the international success of Efren Reyes and Django Bustamante (Fil/German na siya mga pre) and other pinoy cue masters, and our hottest sports as of late is in boxing mainly because of the international recognition Manny Pacquiao recieves.

International games success are the best market and advertisement PBA can get in order to revive their league. The best way to get that is to cooperate and help SBP steer SG to its goal.

"In shorts" ba pre, mali the PANTS are este problems are people just like YOU, instead of being part of the solution they are just worsening the problem by trying to bring down the current solutions to address problem and QUITTERS just like you.

Let me remind you that SG is a developmental national team, pag sinabing developmental eh they are being trained to improve and be competitive in the international basketball scene, remember they are just nursery kids compared to their rivals, underdogs. In pants hindi solution ang SG sa Phil basketball but a developmental solution, they are not expected to win their early games such as Stankovic but win in the Asian Games and Olympic Qualifiers which is their target. If you will just shut-up and carefully monitor Gilas you will clearly see their development, they finished 4th in Stankovic Cup with a depleted line-up and without a naturalized player unlike the other teams in Stankovic (except Chinese Taipe and Japan).

Can you dig this quitter? Quitters never win...

Top 3 ...Unlikely with the non PBA reinforced line-up:wacko:

Nevertheless, hat off to a Gilas Bandwagoner ... pagtapos mong laitin ang Gilas vs un pinakamamahal mong Powerade team. Now ur super optimistic naman

Smart-Gilas now wants James Yap, Arwind Santos

If Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman and team manager Frankie Lim will have their way, the national team to the Guangzhou Asian Games might as well be an all-PBA squad.

After announcing that they want former PBA MVP Kelly Williams, Ranidel de Ocampo and Ryan Reyes of Talk ’N Text, Asi Taulava of Coke and Sol Mercado of Rain or Shine to beef up its team, Lim added the two-time MVP winner James Yap and San Miguel wingman Arwind Santos to his wish list.

Lim said they are considering all options to make the team more competitive for the quadrennial Games since they will be ranged against taller and more experienced teams, mostly from the Middle East powers.

Lim assured, however, that the collegiate stars who have been with the squad since it was formed last January will make up the core although many find this assertion a bit ludicrous considering the superiority of PBA players over the collegians.

Yap and Santos were mentioned as possible reinforcements after Toroman indicated that the team needed a shooter (Yap) and a wingman (Santos).

“We’ll still discuss it. We’re considering all our options,” Lim said. “But the composition of the team will depend on what we really need.”

The team got a taste of PBA talent when 6-foot-9 Taulava, the 35-year-old PBA veteran and a three-time national team member, suited up for Smart-Gilas and helped the team to a fourth place in the recently-concluded FIBA-Asia Stankovic Cup in Beirut, Lebanon.

That performance had been their best since the squad was formed some two years ago.

The Smart-Gilas team’s improvement has been slow and the tournament results woeful and many are wondering whether having a national team with mostly college standouts had been a good idea.

Though SBP and Smart had generously bankrolled the team, it probably is only a matter of time before the team’s patrons start weighing whether it’s all worth it.

But before PBA players are pressed into service, team and PBA board approval are needed.

Already in the national pool are amateurs Dylan Ababou, JV Casio, Jason Ballesteros, Aldrech Ramos, Chris Tiu, JR Cawaling, Greg Slaughter, Mark Barroca, Mac Baracael, Japeth Aguilar, and Fil-Am Marcio Lassiter.

American Marcus Douthit, a 6-foot-10 center who is a candidate for naturalization, and Fil-Am guard Chris Lutz are also part of the pool.

However, Douthit and Lassiter must secure first their Philippine passports before the final deadline of submission of names on September 15 imposed by the organizing committee of the Asian Games, which is set November 12 to 27.

i agree 100%. grabe politics sa sports bodies dito sa atin.

everyone wants a piece of the cake. pag success ang program lahat nag aagawan sa credit, pag pumalpak, kanya kanyang turuan. punung puno ng sisihan at bangayan.

napakaming problema ng smart gilas. aside sa continous bickering ng bap at sbp, some players have left and entered the draft for what? for money and playing time? because of these the line up is depleted. some naman are in school. the pba has refused to lend players (thanks pba and coke for reconsidering for letting asi play), the team owners who doesnt want their players getting injured in international tourneys. even finding the right naturalized player is being criticized and its process of naturalizing a foreign player. these are just some of the problems why smart gilas growth has stalled.

sayang ang basketball program na ito. theres already a system. toroman is good but what good is his coaching kung hindi maiimplement ang system niya.

just look at iran, because they followed his system it went straight from being an unranked team to be the number 24 team in world and now headed to the world basketball championship this aug 28. and guess what? it took toroman and iran two years to accomplish that.

we can do better than that if the players, team owners, team officials get their act together. the glory is for the country not for an institution nor a sports body nor a team owner. i hope they wake up before the chance to be competitive is lost again.

^I agree that James Yap and Kelly Williams should be added but not Arwind Santos. Yap due to his outside sniping and KW due to his rebounding.

Arwind Santos has height / length ... talent-wise he is also better than some of the existing forwards on the Gilas team. Now if he is available and Gilas is already going the route of getting PBA players as reinforcement then why not consider him? Why limit the reinforcement to only 2 when you can have all 7 on the wish list?

Toroman is just milking the SBP. it's not the coach who wins the games. it's the players. and basketball is a sport where height matters.

c'mon wake up guys. basketball is here to stay yeah. i believe that. we Filipinos love watching basketball. pero hanggang ganon na lang tayo. spectators.

we're no longer the basketball gods in Asia, so dream on making it through the Olympics. even if RP has an iota of a chance to play in the 2012 Olympics, ano naman ang laban natin sa mga European teams, much more the USA Basketball team composed of NBA players.

just realistic here. we have lots of good players, maybe if we're talking individual skills, but calling ourselves the only professional basketball league in Asia is a joke. we can't even beat China (Team A).

mag focus na lang tayo sa boxing, billiards and bowling. then maybe football/soccer where height is not crucial to the sport.

that's why SG is a joke. i'm sick and tired of it. they just keep making excuses when losing games and in the tournament.
