Marlou Aquino on possible Robert Jaworski comeback with Ginebra: 'Naku, mas dadagundong ang mga coliseum'

Former Ginebra star Marlou Aquino pointed out that Robert Jaworski won several championships while coaching against the likes of Yeng Guiao, Chot Reyes, Norman Black and Tim Cone - coaches who still rule the pro league to this day. "'Yung style naman ng system namin noon, nasubukan naman namin against those coaches. Nag-champion pa nga kami, di ba?" he says. Jerome Ascano

AS soon as news of Robert Jaworski's possible return to the PBA circulated, one of his former players, Marlou Aquino, had just one piece of reminder for the present crop of Ginebra players.

Better shed your superstar mentality.

"Hindi naman sa nagbibigay ng advice sa mga players ngayon, kasi baka sasabihin nga tao, 'Iba noon, iba ngayon," said the 6-9 center out of Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan, who spent the best years of his career playing for Jaworski under the Ginebra banner.

Walang superstar-superstar," he added.

Asked how it would be like for Jaworski if he makes a PBA comeback amid news that he is in talks with San Miguel Corp. big boss Ramon S. Ang on a possible return to Ginebra, Aquino could not help but compare the style of Ginebra players during his time and now.

Kasi naglalaro kami noon para sa mga fans," said the 40-year-old big man.

'Yun kami noon, walang injury-injury. Laban kung laban," Aquino added.

The many-time All-Star also declared that Ginebra's brand of game back then was so physical that it would put the tough play of current PBA toughie Rain or Shine to shame.

"'Yung style ng laro namin nun talagang physical. 'Yun naman nakilala ang Ginebra eh. Parang Rain or Shine ngayon, kaya lang mas matindi pa," he said.

Aquino's longtime teammate, Bal David, said a lot of things are bound to change at Ginebra if and when Jaworski is asked to take over the reins again.

Aquino believes that Jaworski still has what it takes to lead a team to a championship, even if coaching and basketball technology have greatly evolved since the last time the 'Big J' coached 16 years ago.

Aquino also pointed out that Jaworski won several championships while coaching against the likes of Yeng Guiao, Chot Reyes, Norman Black and Tim Cone - coaches who still rule the pro league to this day.

"'Yung style naman ng system namin noon, nasubukan naman namin against those coaches. Nag-champion pa nga kami, di ba?" said Aquino.

And how it would be in the event the 'Big J' returns, he was asked.

"Naku, malaki 'yun. Maganda 'yun. Ang ganda nun, kaya sana matuloy," said Aquino.

"Sasabog talaga ang mga venue ngayon. Mas dadagundong ang mga coliseum," added the 1996 Rookie of the Year awardee.

The PBA great also has no doubt in his mind that a Jaworski-led Ginebra team can fill coliseums as big as the soon-to-open Philippine Arena, reputedly the biggest domed arena in the world with a capacity of 55,0000, in Bocaue, Bulacan.

"Oo naman. Eh noong nag-champion nga kami dati, nag-motorcade kami sa Metro Manila, para kaming Manny Pacquiao," he said.

Dont get me wrong...i love the BIG J...but im abit apprehensive on his coaching styles....before ok yun style nya eh...pero ngayon daming style na ng mga plays...among the batch of coaches now who went to war against big J..only tim cone black and yeng G are left...

Pero pag nde pwede si big J...yeng guiao, tim cone and norman black would fit ginebras system and players....but im still looking forward to jawo returning to the PBA....not only to Ginebra...

Napakalakas ng line-up ng Ginebra, tamang coach lang ang kailangan, ok na sana si Chua kaso dahil sa pulitika sa San Miguel Corp./management naalis s'ya bilang head coach at naging coach nila ang bopols na si Agustin, tapos si Sauler who steered DLSU in his first try, I don't know what's up with the players but they have to do something about it.

ok nman yung Freeman last game... wla lng talgang naging suporta masyado sa locals

For some reason or another nawala 'yung aggressiveness ni Japeth na nakita natin noong 1st conference, dati me slam dunk na at me medium range jumper at tres pa, ngayon parang pigil ang laro at maski ang jumper tila me pag-aaalinlangan pa

Freeman should be able to compliment yun twin towers....kung pagsabayin sila....tamang tama sa 3 ilagay si freeman....

pinagsasabay pa nila urbiztondo at tenorio!

Hayyy wala talaga ...its not the never say attitude ang problema....its the walang alam and paki attitude ng coaching staff and management....from the monster team with twice to beat advantage nun all filipino ..nde nakapsok sa championship...hanggang ngayon na pinilit si rodgers matagal bago pinalitan...nde na naman nakapsok...mas alam pa ng mga fans ang mga problema eh...INUTIL na coaching staff and management!!!!!

What I don't like about MC47 is that tweet s'ya ng tweet when there are times na me fault din s'ya that contributes to their lost

The management's decision turned out to be BAD:

1. Gabe Freeman has been measured a shade above 6'5" (the height limit for the next conference)

2. In crucial game/s, a strong import (Howell et. al.) can impose his might and strength with a local match-up

3. Freeman is talented and has the right attitude alright, but the team's cohesiveness was compromised

Sorry guys but I just lost respect and interest with Ginebra. It's been years since i supported this team. Players, coaching staff and management do not care about the fans anymore. I just hope Caguioa gets traded or any of the 3 expansion teams avail the services of Jaworski. Wherever they go, i'll go.

Sinabi mo pa sir, bingi ang management sa clamor ng fans, gone are the days na nagmamadali akong makauwi pag me laro ang Ginebra para lang mapanuod ko sa TV now iba na

Inutil talaga. If only they can implement the defense of Rain or Shine and the offense and passing of TNT.Kayang kaya ng team gawin yun.Barangay has all the materials.

aside from the incompetent coaches na napapansin natin, nakita ko din kagabi na wala na masyadong ginebra fans na nanonood. mas marami pang bakante na upuan kaysa sa nanonood. management should already be concerned about this and act fast. bihira na ngang sumigaw ng gi-ne-bra!! gi-ne-bra!!! o wala na kasing sisigaw...wala na yung 6th man ng ginebra. to ato and company, mahiya naman kayo...delicadeza na lang. tender your resignations. you guys can't even maximize all the talents that you have. si japeth binangko nung 2nd half nung RoS game...yung 4th overall pick nakaupo lang sa bangko...butas na nga yata yung shorts kakaupo. only #7 can bring out the best and fighting spirit of the players.

Has the Ginebra coaching job been offered to Tim Cone understudy Jeff Cariaso?

http://contents.spin.ph/image/San-Mig-Coffee-DPeralta-042414.jpg
Jeff Cariaso played for Tim Cone during the glory years of the Alaska franchise and later became one of his deputies when the multit-titled coach moved to San Mig three years ago.Dante Peralta

WILL Jeff Cariaso be the next coach of Barangay Ginebra?

Possibly, says a source.

Word has reached Spin.ph on Thursday that Cariaso, a former player of multi-titled Tim Cone and now his chief understudy at San Mig, has been offered the Ginebra coaching job after the team's disappointing finish in the PBA Commissioner's Cup under Juno Sauler and Ato Agustin.

According to the source, the offer was made to Cariaso on Wednesday and negotiations are underway for his move to Ginebra from sister team San Mig.

"Nag-usap na sila kahapon. Negosasyon pa lang 'yan, pero mukhang siya talaga ang ina-eye," said the source. "Sa ngayon, wala pang formal deal kasi nag-uusap pa sa kontrata and all."

Spin.ph tried to contact the 15-year PBA veteran, but he has yet to respond to calls and text messages.

Team insiders said Cariaso already has the blessings of Cone, who coached the Fil-American guard during the glory years of the Alaska franchise and later took him in as one of his deputies when he moved to San Mig three years ago.

The news came at a time when Ginebra fans are salivating over the prospect of PBA legend Robert Jaworski returning to a team he helped turn into the most popular in the league behind the never-say-die spirit his teams personified in the eighties and early nineties.

Sources said the Ginebra offer to Jaworski has been on the table for a while now but there has been no movement in the negotiations since.

Another source said Jaworski, 68, is still in the US.

As it is, Sauler, who acted as 'active assistant' during Ginebra's failed campaign in the Commissioner's Cup, is already out of the running since he is set to focus on De La Salle's varsity squad, which he led to a UAAP championship last season.

If ever, it would be no surprise that the next Ginebra coach would come from San Mig, clearly the most successful among the three teams under the SMC umbrella.

While San Mig has won the last two league championships, Ginebra's title drought has now spanned six years while San Miguel has not won a title since the 2009 First Conference.

DISGRASYA!!! ano ba itong pinag-gagawa ng management sa team? i have nothing against cariaso as a player...but head coach of ginebra?

sorry OT but i'm rooting for air 21...this team personifies the old ginebra never-say-die.

IMHO, Coach Jawo can obviously bring back and lift the "Never say Die Spirit" of Ginebra. No doubt about his charm to the fans, but does he still able to adopt the system of playing in the PBA today? He's off for many years and I think his a little bit rusty with a solid big heart in basketball.

but Legend speaks for itself, Coach Sonny is one the best coach in the PBA history...

Futuristic Idea?

I would like to see Coach Guaio giving instructions to Ginebra Players someday. Hell No for Cariaso!!! :ninja:

I think Coach Sonny would be effective as Ginebra Head coach...

and this is with all due respect to all comments which says that Coach Sonny's old coaching style

might not be effective today...

here's my point:

* First, a lot of us were able to witness what a short pep talk from Coach Sonny could do to this team...

(then now imagine what could a 3-hours practice,or any number of hours, depending on how long do

our team usually practice, could do to our team) I bet majority of us believes that if not for that

dug-out appearance by Coach Sonny, BGSM-SanMig series could have ended even more earlier (Game 6) Coach Jawo is a great motivator... just take a look at our last champion team which was held by him...

Marlou (who happens to be a lot more slower than Japeth), Feihl (who unarguably lacks talent than Slaughter), Hizon (whom i think is as deadly as a shooter as Baracael), Locsin (who is as hardworking as JR Reyes), David (who is as quick and intelligent as Tenorio), plus Jarencio / Gayoso / Ong / Cheng (now we have an improved team with Ellis, Mamaril, Helterbrand, Ababou), and oops i almost forgot...

they have Dodot Jaworksi (man, we have Forrester, 100% better, right??)

a great coach, kaya i'm sure makaka-adjust sya... ska hello???? do you have to still play basketball

to be a great coach??? wala ba silang TV sa bahay para hindi na makapanuod si Coach ng mga games?

si Yeng Guiao ba naglalaro??? si Norman Black ba naglalaro pa??? i'm sure in his own ways

kailangan ng BGSM yung coach na magpapakita ng authority, someone they look up to...

if coach Sonny was able to do it before, he can do that again today...

:ninja:

with all due respect sir... i am not here to argue with anyone, i'm just stating my point/opinion...

and i would rather take the risk of having Coach Sonny as head coach than to watch Coach Ato waste

a lot of talents...

dun sa pangalawang question mo boss, try mo lang mag-back read... hindi man directly nabanggit,

some comments implied that since matagal nang wala sa basketball scene si Coach Sonny eh

baka daw, hindi na sya makasabay...

salamat!

No to Jeff Cariaso for replacement....

kung ako tatanungin, i'd rather not...

Point taken. Having Coach Sonny on the bench of Ginbera is a huge crowd impact. Yes, I think he's a little bit short of style today compared to his glorious years in the PBA.

Iba ang nagmomotivate sa nagcocoach...i love the big J.....jawo is hands down a really really great motivator...if not the best motivator....but coaching before vs coaching now is very very different also....you cannot keep on comparing marlou with japhet, feihl with slaughter etc....since during their time the talent pool and quality of teams are vastly inferior compared to todays player...dati rati one on one lang ok na eh...kaya nga napagiwanan tayo ng mga ibang bansa dahil sa one on one plays natin...

Now look at the different plays being used...from gilas dribble drive to san mig all dependable triangle defense...sama mo narin yun kay black , trillo and of course RoS...thats why im implying that maybe jawo will be behind sa coaching style...tama sinabi ng isa dyan ....ganun ba kadali magadopt si jawo??? .....iba yun nagpep talk sa nagcocoach na...pero syempre mas maganda kung magaling magmotivate and magcoach at the same time...SA NGAYON HA!....compare mo sina yeng and trillo...then kay cone and black....mas magaling mag motivate si yeng kesa kay trillo...pero si cone magaling magmotivate and coach pa....NOW ...will cone out motivate jawo sa mga players? Of course not....but will cone out coach jawo??? ...perhaps ....sa ngayon...

Yes we all agree na kelangan palitan ng coach ang ginebra...but dont get our hopes too high that the BIG J will instantly bring the GINs the championship trophy

Leo Isaac on Jaworski's motivational power: 'Maski ikaw 'pag kinausap ka, malilimutan mo pangalan mo'

http://contents.spin.ph/image/isaac-jaworski-42514.jpg
Blackwater Sports coach Leo Isaac, a former Ginebra player, says he regards Robert Jaworski as one of the best situational coaches the pro league has ever seen. Jerome Ascano

ROBERT Jaworski is one of the best situational Filipino coaches the pro league has ever seen.

So said Leo Isaac, the likely coach of PBA expansion team Blackwater Sports who played the best years of his pro career under Jaworski under the fabled Ginebra teams of the eighties and early nineties.

“Iba ang dating ni coach Sonny. Kasi in almost every situation, alam niya kung ano ang dapat gawin. Kasi most of the time, galing na siya sa ganung sitwasyon,” Isaac told Spin.ph.

The former Mapua star recalled how the Big J would always give the team motivational lines to lift the players’ spirit especially whenever they are down.

“'Pag 'yung Jaworski ang nagsalita, ibang-iba. Makikinig ka at talagang titibay ang loob mo,” said Isaac, who was thankful to get the breaks at Ginebra starting in his rookie year in 1986.

“That time, Great Taste nag-draft sa akin nung 1985. Fifth overall ako, kaso di ako pumirma kasi limited lang playing minutes ko dun. The following year, kinuha ako ni coach Sonny. Dun na nagsimula lahat,” said the Ginebra shooting guard known for clutch shooting and tough defense.

During the Big J’s stint with the league’s most popular team, Isaac said scouting and video viewing were still not part of game preparations.

“Laro lang talaga kami noon. Pero 'yung Jaworski, alam niya ang gagawin. Kilalang-kilala niya ang kilos ng kalaban at mga players ng kabila,” said the 6-foot-2 guard from Project 6, Quezon City.

“Individually, scouted niya 'yung mga players, 'yung mga kalaban.”

Asked if Jaworski can still match up with the new breed of PBA coaches in the event he attempts a comeback with Ginebra, Isaac quickly replied, “Oo naman. Kaya niya. Maraming tatalunin.”

[see Marlo Aquino on possible Jaworski comeback: 'Mas dadagundong ang mga coliseum']

Tignan mo yung Gilas,” said Isaac, referring to Jaworski’s pep talk to Gilas a few days before last year’s Fiba-Asia Men’s Championship where the national team finished a surprise runner-up.

“Maski ikaw 'pag kinausap ka, malilimutan mo pangalan mo dahil magaling mag-salita at mag-motivate. May charisma,” he said. “May pinanggalingan kasing basketball pride si coach Sonny.”

Eighteen years after playing for Jaworski, Isaac admitted trying to emulate the Big J’s motivational power and coaching style.

“Yes I try to be like him on some occasions, especially when our team is down,” said the current Blackwater Sports coach in the PBA D-League. “Was it my inspiration when I led Blackwater Sports to the championship of the last D-League Foundation Cup? I can say yes.

[see Has Ginebra coaching job been offered to Jeff Cariaso?]

Apart from Blackwater’s upset of powerhouse NLEX in the D-League Finals, Isaac also pulled off another Jaworski-esque title conquest during the 1998 season of the defunct Philippine Basketball League (PBL) when he steered underdog Dr. J Alcohol to the championship over pro-bound Tanduay Rhum.
