New York Knickerbockers

To the Knicks believers, am quoting someone's post at Knickerblogger.net site here :

Post #1 from Caleb :

Based on what we were saying yesterday, it seems about equally likely that the Knicks catch Boston, or catch Orlando. (3 GB Boston; 4 GB Orlando, but O-town playing worse and struggling with injuries). If Knicks have 10.8 percent chance for each, they have 20.5 percent chance for catching one of those teams.

The other huge game, obviously, is Milwaukee. If Knicks win that one, there's almost zero chance the Bucks can catch us. If Milwaukee wins, it'll be down to the wire, although the Knicks will have a game advantage and a slightly easier sked.

Of course, even if Knicks are mediocre and fall behind Bucks, Celtics AND Magic, they could make the playoffs as an 8-seed if Philly keeps slumping. We're tied with Philly now, and own the tiebreaker.

Post #2 from Grymm :

IF we get the 6th seed we'd most likely end up with Indiana– the Pacers are two games up on Boston with an extremely favorable home schedule.

Orlando just lost to Washington. Their best player has a back injury and could be a game-time decision every game moving forward. They're without their best offensive glue player for the remainder, and of course, that locker room may be in complete shambles (and that's a big deal in the NBA)…

They play 5 games against teams battling to get in the playoffs or get out of the 7th and 8th seed — four of them are on the road.

If they lost to Atlanta and the Knicks beat Washington, the Knicks will be 3 games back with the tie-breaker.

Orlando has to finish a game better than the Knicks, which really makes the Knicks two games back.

Orlando has two scheduled gimmies of their remaining 8 games — but they just lost a scheduled gimmie.

Can Orlando lose 5-6 of their remaining 8 games given their state? I think the odds are much greater than 5-10 percent of that happening. Going 3-5 wouldn't be all that bad considering where they are right now. Good teams go through 3-5 stretches all the time.

5 losses means the Knicks need to go 7-1. Sweep the homestand, and you've got a great chance of getting the 6th seed and facing the Pacers, a team the Knicks are better than ( at least have looked that way for 10 of the 11 competitive quarters they've played them)

That's the road this team will need to take to make an incredible run.

---

One can therefore conclude that the Knicks has a big chance assuming that they don't regress from the way they've been playing defense which is said to be 3rd in the NBA (recent standings) and from the fact that Chandler is a good candidate for defensive player of the year awards. Heck, they could climb to #4 although its a bit of a long shot based on the fact that Boston is playing so well also lately irregardless of the fact that they're playing their starters heavy minutes (barring any major injuries). However, they sure could move as high as #6 if Orlando plays like crap the way Philly is and the fact that Dwight is out with a bad back ala Amare. Go Knicks!

An ESPN Article by Ian Begley - Playoff picture: 6th still remote possibility

The Celtics clinched theAtlantic Division title with their win Wednesday over the Magic, but they leftthe Knicks with a small window to catch Orlando for the sixth spot in the East.

Orlando's loss left the Magic with a 36-26 record, three games ahead of the Knicks (33-29) with four to play.

Orlando's magic number to freeze the Knicks out ofthe No. 6 seed is two.

If Orlando wins twice, or New York loses twice, the Knicks will have no chance to finish in sixth. If the Magic win one oftheir next four and the Knicks lose one of their next four, New York can'tfinish in sixth.

But if both Orlando and New York finish with thesame record, the Knicks would win the tiebreaker based on head-to-head matchupsthis season (2-1).

New York plays at Cleveland (20-41) on Friday andat Atlanta (37-25) on Sunday. The Knicks then host the Clippers (39-23) nextWednesday, and finish with the Bobcats (7-54) in Charlotte the next night.

The Magic, playing without DwightHoward and HedoTurkoglu, finish with two back-to-backs.

Orlando plays at Utah (32-30) and Denver (34-28)on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, and finishes the year with a home gameagainst Charlotte (7-54) next Wednesday and a road game against Memphis (37-25)next Thursday.

Again, Orlando's magic number is two. So twoKnicks losses or two Magic wins -- or a combination of a Magic win and a Knicksloss -- would freeze the Knicks out of the sixth seed.

Wednesday's win kept the Knicks a game ahead ofthe 76ers in the race for seventh place. The Knicks also gained a game on theninth-place Bucks, moving 3 1/2 games up on Milwaukee with four to play.
