Who Is Into Scale Modelling?

Zvezda. I never brought an AFV kit from that brand yet. Probably my subconscious is still recoiling from the memory when I got their Russian WW2 infantry set way back in the 90's, damn, they were so crappy! Spent my whole time cleaning seam lines and the fit of equipment was horrible! Reminded me when I got my 1st ESCI kit of SS troops! Awful, I was a teenager that time but I knew then that it was bigger than 1/35 scale, actually it might be bigger than 1/32! :thumbsdownsmiley:

Sorry for the rant, my kits are mainly Tamiya then dominated by DML. I've been contemplating on getting a Trumpeter kit. Reviews from Missing Lynx, Armorama and PMMS are quite okay, might try their KV series.

Ahhh so you also do 1/35 figures! I cut my teeth on the old Academy clones of the 1970s Tamiya kits. Not too bad but I really didn't know how to fill in seams and always thought that more is better when I was using the old Duco Cement in the tube. I still have a lot of armor kits in the stash, around 400? Tamiya, Academy, DML, Italeri, Trumpeter, AFV Club, the odd Heller and Zvezda kits, unfortunately I have no Finemolds or Gunze. I'm starting to build the difficult ones although I was surprised at the quality of the Zvezda Panzer I, nice detail but a bit too over engineered, too many small parts.

Going to Lil's later to shop for serious plastic, like some of those 'premium editon' DML kits. Why do I feel like I'm going to a porn shop?

Did the Mrs notice the latest addition to your collection?

Was in front of Lil's yesterday, but was able to resist the temptation  to enter.

Actually she did, but she was too busy counting the 10K I gave her to get some new dress/makeup/shoes or some other trivial thing. I was chatting with a newbie armor modeler who brought his wife with him (typical noob mistake) when he noticed my stack of DML kits being arranged in a box. Turns out he's a surgeon. He says he is as precise with assembling his kits as he is with an operation. I can imagine him positioning the parts within a millimeter's tolerance. Me, I'm just happy if I can actually finish a kit.

Oh and you are made of more sterner stuff than I sir.

Gents,

Check out the IPMS-BA Exhibit now on-going at the basement, Robinsons Galleria.

Just checked it out this afternoon. Mostly 1/32 and 1/48 aircraft and some nice 1/35 choppers. So how come there are only 6 1/35 armor models???? Unfair!

BTW just a suggestion, if the IPMS-BA guys aren't busy with something, maybe they should chat up the people who look at their exhibits, especially one who takes time to really look at the models. I saw an adolescent examining the F-4s really closely and I'm sure he had lots of questions on his mind.

Sorry for the late reply, Doc. Was out of town almost the whole week.

Im glad you saw the exhibit. I was there yesterday and Saturday. I think you saw only the Philippine armor entries. There were other 1/35 armor kits, in fact.

Thanks for the suggestion. Its a valid one, and Ill tell the others about it.

Next stop: Nationals this November.

:)

I'm glad I caught it too. I wish I could have seen the other 1/35 AFVs but I'm sure a lot of modelers will join the November nationals. I don't know how many times I've said this but if I could finish one by November... fat chance. Congratulations to the IPMS-BA for helping promote the hobby.

Manhivin,

Yes, we do. You can find Hasegawa kits at all Lils outlets (Quad, MegaMall and Trinoma). Old Revell (US) kits are pretty hard to come by these days, but newer (and better) Revell Germany kits are available at JMNs in Harrison and Hobbies and Comics in Makati Cinema Square.

Special Toys and Hobbies sometimes have the new Hasegawa kits as well as some old Revell, AMT, ERTL and Monogram kits but they are scattered among the shops in Manila, like SM City North, Festival Mall and in Greenhills.

For plastic scale models, I'd suggest acrylic paint. It dries faster than enamel, and it's easier to clean the brushes and tools.

For airbrushing, I would go with Tamiya acrylics. They are readily available, most of the stocks are new, they come in a very wide range of colors and finishes. Mr. Hobby colors have very smooth pigments, but the choices and supply is very limited. For brushpainting, I find Tamiya enamels, which is a 'hot' paint, meaning the base solvent eats into the plastic, are better at coverage than the Tamiya acrylics, which seem to thin to properly brush on in one coat. However, the acrylics brush on better if you apply a base coat, like a spray lacquer. For washes, I use thinned oil paints and for drybrushing, almost always with oil paints.
