Manny Pacquiao has indeed come a long, long way.

 

In the extra issue of The Ring magazine, regarded as the Bible of Boxing, Pacquiao shared top billing with Oscar dela Hoya and Arturo Gatti where he was candidly praised and extolled for his boxing prowess and billed as one of the top fighters of his generation.

 

"American movie houses may never book his latest film Lisensyadong Kamao (A License to Punch), but American fight fans are beginning to understand why Manny Pacquiao is such a big star in the Philippines. With an animalistic fury that recalled the vintage days of Aaron Pryor and Roberto Duran, he thrashed Erik Morales in January, leaving no doubt that he is one of the top fighters of his era," Don Stradley wrote in the lead paragraph of his full length piece on the Filipino boxing icon titled "Pac-mania explodes worldwide."

 

Stradley also paid tribute to Pacquiao’s penchant for thrill, saying, "Pacquiao wants to be Mr. Excitement all the time. Even when he’s not at his best, he guarantees some thrills."

 

Only a handful of fighters even come close, he added.

 

That includes Gatti, the reigning welterweight champion, who has been the sport’s most exciting performer for a decade until Pacquiao came along.

 

While Gatti has been exciting against good but not great fighters, Pacquiao is exciting against future Hall of Famers. And that’s the difference.

 

"Pacquiao is more exciting than Gatti for different reasons," boxing historian Bert Sugar told The Ring. "Gatti is exciting only because he’s a blood-and-guts fighter. Good point. Nung simula siguro, people probably frowned on him saying "are you crazy?! you have to go to school, get good grades and work in an office or something". Now, probably the same people say "sobra naman na pera nyan, di tatagal yan, lalaki ulo nyan, wawaldasin nya pera nya, etc. etc."

 

Boxing is all he did period. I don't think Manny did boxing on the side and he probably didn't have a backup plan. In that sense he bet everything and went for broke and now he is reaping the rewards. He deserves every penny and should get more, IMO.

"The end really surprised me," Vazquez confided after the victory. "Larios is a good champion. He continued fighting even after the cut. I thought he would keep coming but the doctor determined it had to be stopped."

The two had first met back in 1997 when Vazquez (121) had scored a surprising first round knockout over Larios in the Arena Coliseo, Mexico City.

 

Adding to the intrigue of the contest, Vazquez's belt was not at risk after Larios rejected paying the IBF sanctioning fees. Larios did not attend a mandatory weight check-in by the IBF that mandates no fighter is allowed to gain more than 10 pounds following the weigh in and the morning of a bout.

 

The 3 to1 favorite before the opening bell, Larios, Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico got caught at the 2:33 mark of the 1st, as Vazquez drilled him with a rapid-fire three-shot combination. Bent at the waist, Larios froze from an instant and Vazquez, 27 nailed him with four more whistling uppercuts to the jaw.

 

The sudden explosion rocked Larios, and his knees buckled before dropping to the floor near the center of the ring. Vazquez appeared to have landed one final shot just as the WBC titleholder was hitting the canvas. Larios was up quickly at the count of three, as referee Tony Weeks administered the mandatory 8-count.

 

With 1:54 to go in the opening stanza of the scheduled 12 rounder, Larios, 29 landed with a solid right cross to the jaw. After a steady war of jabs, Larios unloaded again late in the round and caught Vazquez with a long right cross to the jaw and a double left hook to the side of the skull.

 

Vazquez shifted his attack downstairs in the 2nd; banging whipsaw left hooks and sharp right hands off the WBC titleholder's rib cage. However, with a 1:55 to go in the round, Larios drilled Vazquez with a riveting straight left jab between the eyes. Larios continued to circle to his left and shoot hard jabs at the IBF champion's face. Vazquez returned to cutting the distance and hammering away with a searing body shots, in an attempt to slow the faster moving fighter down. With 31-seconds to go in the 2nd, Vazquez clocked Larios with a scalding counter right hand flush on the jaw followed by two more hard hooks to the midsection. At the 14-second mark of the round, Larios connected with a sharp right hand to the face that drew "oohs and ahas" from the fight fans.

Both men continued to unload with scoring shots throughout the 3rd, as each fighter attempted to pick up what was all ready a very quick pace. With 1:06 remaining in the round, Vazquez scored with a crisp left hook that rocketed off of Larios' jaw. With 23-seconds to go in the 3rd, Vazquez dropped low and then connected with a short right hook followed by an arcing right cross to the face.

 

Both shots landed and the first blow ripped open a gash that ran almost the entire length of Larios' left eyebrow. Vazquez's second punch had the effect of using a can opener on the wound and blood began pumping from the wound. Seconds later, Vazquez stunned Larios with another two-shot combination to the face that drove the WBC champ back into the ropes.

 

Within seconds, referee Tony Weeks called time and halted the action as blood began curling down the left side of Larios' face. As Larios walked across the canvas to be examined by the ringside physician, blood began pouring down his face and dripping on the deck. Dr. William Berliner wasted little time in advising Weeks to call off the bout.

 

The diagonal slice appeared to go almost all the way to the bone and there was nothing left to do but to declare Vazquez the winner via a gruesome third round TKO.

Sister your question has nothing to with my previous post. I never questioned his exploits because he indeed made the country proud. Maybe there is something wrong with your comprehension ability. But i agree with lover bong you dont need to be a superstar to help or make your country proud. Just by paying the correct taxes and be a law abiding citizen.....nakatulong ka na sa bayan mo. Ikaw tax payer ka ba? di ka naman siguro criminal,right?
