Globe slams Smart for ‘predatory pricing’

GLOBE Telecom Inc. has asked regulators to stop a promo of its two main rivals, which it claims will create a “virtual monopoly” in the mobile phone service market.

Globe Telecom asked the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to put an end to the “All Day Texting 258 Call+Text Promo” being offered by Smart Communications Inc. and Pilipino Telephone Corp. -- both owned by Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), itself a telephone monopoly until the early 1990s.

“In implementing these promotional offerings only between the two, [smart and Piltel] are acting in concert to corner the market and thus create a virtual monopoly,” said Rodolfo Salalima, Globe senior vice president for corporate and regulatory affairs."

“The charge of predatory pricing is not only unmeritorious but is outright absurd in the light of the facts that are fully disclosed to the Honorable Commission and even the public in general,” Smart’s lawyer Ivy Plaza-Cortez said in her reply to the NTC."

SEEMS LIKE GLOBE IS ACTING LIKE A CRY-BABY BECAUSE SMART IS CORNERING THE MARKET SHARE THROUGH THE LATTER'S PRICING SCHEME. INSTEAD OF WHINING, WHY NOT BRING THEIR PRICES DOWN AS WELL. EVEN SMART ADMITS THAT EVEN WITH THE LOW PRICES, THEY ARE STILL MAKING A PROFIT.
