1. Speaking of "signature" shots, ginagaya namin noon yung mga players who have a distinct way of shooting free throws. For example, si Jawo, hold the ball right above his forehead, right palm over left, then flicks the ball using only his palm. Or at least, for us, that's how it looked like. Si Adornado, he puts the ball over his right shoulder, both arms touching each other. Si Cleofas, palms on opposite sides of the ball, puts the ball right behind his head. Pag kami na gumagawa, hindi pumapasok yung bola. Hehehe!

And...ang uso nun kapag free throw...right foot forward for balance habang tumitira ng free throw. Signature shot? I remember Sullano of Mariwasa na ang style niya releasing the ball right hand malapit sa kanyang kanang ear. Martirez used to shoot with both hands also with dave Regullano. Style ni Bogs, kaya siya nabansagan na "double blade", ang landi kasi ng form niya. Another player who puts the ball behind his head while shooting was Manny Paner. Jake Rojas also of Mariwasa owns the most accurate hands, usually starting with 5 for 5 shots then 8 for 8 and who would not forget his "jack knife" layout-both hands while doing the layup. Si Belmonte (the balding player of San Miguel) who jump shoots while flicking both his feet behind. Delikado kapag hinawakan ng kalabang player. Si Mr. Pektus....Jimmy Mariano, who shoots left handed with great accuracy.

  2. Well, very few among today's players can still shoot from long range like with the same consistency as Jawo, Arnaiz, Atoy and Bogs, Hubalde or even Webb, Lim Eng Beng, Bilbao, Mariano, etc. in their prime. After the Caidic/Magsanoc/Jarencio era, we now have Yap, etc. (pero hindi pa rin eh?) but mostly, everyone seems to want to take it strong to the hoop ala MJ which is fine for local, perhaps even regional tournaments but virtually useless for international competitions where we have to play against much, much taller teams.

Style dati, run-and-gun. That's why there is a premium on shooting and passing accuracy especially for long passes on those fastbreak plays. Scores commonly reach the 100s. Until Tommy Manotoc came along and started preaching defense. Now, it became more of a half-court game. Yung ginagawa nila Arnaiz noon na during a fastbreak, instead of driving to the hoop, titigil just before the arc para tumira ng tres, di na uubra sa mga coach ngayon yan! Although I also can't think of any player right now who can still do that, make the shot and get away with it. Or yung during a half-court play, libre naman, aatras pa si Atoy Co para bumira ng tres instead of taking the higher percentage shot and be happy with a two. But the thing is, they did it because they know they can sink the shot even from the parking lot! Kung ngayon gawin yan, automatic, lalabas na yung player at bangko na yan for the rest of the game.

Exactly. Di puwede sa internatinal ang "buhat buhat" sa ilalim ng goal (not unless you are totally all alone under the basket). The very reason why South Koreal won the ABC title years ago against powerhouse China is that they have players who can accurately shoot from afar. And, flashback, the very reason we won consecutive ABC championship back then was that we have players who can shoot high percentage from the outside, Herrera, Mariano, Marquez, Botchok, Reyes, Marcelo, Miego, and lately, Freddie Webb. A glaring example was Alvin Patrimonio. Kapag locals ang kalaban niya, he can score at will but when he became a member of our national team, wala na! Pinapayungan na lang siya. We can see our players now from PBA na akala natin ang gagaling, what with those magical moves, pero in reality, bulok ang style na yun when it comes to international play.

  3. Speaking of Jun Papa, he often did something we seldom see today: the running jumpshot. And with much accuracy. Another thing we seldom see today is the the stop-and-shoot-on-a-fastbreak, which Atoy Co did time and time again, especially against Toyota with Fernandez defending the paint. And we no longer see the kind of fastbreaks that Jawo and Arnaiz used to run. Those passes by Jawo to Arnaiz often sent the Toyota crowd wild.

Oo nga, before Jun Papa developed that running jumpshot, he's the best sa "set shot" and he can put in that ball much farther than the 3-point lines of today. Siguro, kung meron 3-point shot nun, Papa would easily surpassed the 50 point barrier. But of course, he's in the company of other Asia's great scorers with the likes of Bogs Adornado and Danilo Florencio. Atoy Co is the owner of the most beautiful fade away shot and again, maski nasa 3 point area. Hirap nun. Being a player once during my younger years, fading away from 25 feet out takes lots of body balance for that scoring accuracy.

The tandem of Jawo and Arnaiz naman, the best sa fastbreak but the man responsible sa receiving end was Ompong Segura.

  4. I remember the MICAA days when the Cleofas brothers, Rene Canent, and Freddie Webb played for YCO. Jawo was a Crispa player for a while because he had played under Coach Baby Dalupan when he was still with UE. The Crispa guys then were Bogs Adornado, Danny Florencio, Papa, Rudolf Kutch, and Ed Carvajal.

If I remember right, Jimmy Mariano played for Concepcion. Paner, Martirez, and Regullano played for San Miguel.

I hope that someone comes up with a book on the history of Philippine basketball. That would be awesome! :thumbsupsmiley:

    ====================

Jaime Mariano played for Meralco before the team was disbanded following the ugly incident wherein Jawo and Big Boy Reynoso molested and ganged up on referees Cruz (my dentist at Sampaloc) and Obias. He transferred to Concepcion with another sweet/streak shooting forward Arthur Herrera (na hindi nagugusot ang buhok sa kapal ng pomade during that time).

Sana nga magkaron nga ng book about Phil.basketball. I used to have volumes of clippings during the 60's and early 70's of different MICAA teams pero nawala yun when our house was razed by fire sa Sampaloc. Also, sana rin may reports on nasaan na yung mga imports nun, the likes of Cowart, Robinson, Oliver, Scranton, etc. Buhay pa kaya sila?

  5. Maybe it was South Korea you were referring to. They had the legendary Shin Dong Pa as their top scorer. He was a fine shooter and the only Filipino player who was able to minimize his effectiveness was the late Ed Ocampo.

Jawo also was effective in guarding the great Shin.....limiting his output to just 7 points, was not able to recall which tournament was that. Dave Regullano of San Miguel Beer, when he donned the national colors, also limited the scoring sock of Shin same with another scoring great, Taniguchi of Japan, the other half of the Taniguchi-Abe tandem. That was during the time when our players have nationalistic senses unlike na, sobrang ingat kasi baka ma injure, sayang ang multi-million peso contract nila.So much fan watching the likes of Paner, Samson, Cleofas, Regullano, Jawo, Mariano, Marquez, Miego, Botchok delos Santos, Tolentino, Canent, Marcelo, Martirez, Adornado, Papa, Florencio, atbp. giving their all in the name of our country.

  6. back in the 70's the only building visible in Ortigas was the St. Francis Church and the San miguel building

Ako nga, naaalala ko lang, parang Meralco building lang ang napapansin ko nun. kapag nagpupunta kami sa Angono Rizal na puro grasslands pa nun

  7. Since North Korea is all over the news, was it in the 70s when the national teams of No. Korea and the Phils. squared off in the basketball court at the Rizal Memorial (or was it Araneta?). I remember the Nokor team then played rough vs. our finest players led by Jawo.

Oo nga, I remember that game na nakadapa sa Jawo in front of the North Korean bench tapos may sumipa sa kanya, biglang nagka awatan. Now, North Korean owns the tallest basketball player sa Asia....standing 7'7"

  8. Hindi ba siya in the movie Capt Barbell before?

I think lumabas siya superman na may bigote hehehe. After that he was quoted as saying "SA IKAKAUNLAD NG BAYAN, BISIKLETA ANG KAILANGA"....may na offend...dont know why....he was arrested and pinagbunot ng damo sa Crame...sang the national anthem and panatang makabayan early morning....and was released.

  9. Has anyone here attended

    BIVUOACs in ROTC

Ah yes, we had BIVUOACs at La Mesa Dam park. The really scary thing during those years, kasi ka ma Martial Law lang nun, are our officers (the real military ones) that drunk before sundown and fired their guns kapag madilim na. Then came the night navigation competition. I was an MP then and manning the entrance to the "war zone".

  10. '79 first showing ng THE CHAMP sa Delta Theater. Naka splatter sa labas ng sinehan ang life-size poster ni Jon Voight nasa fighting stance. So, at first glance akala namin ng barkada ko Action to-its ala Rocky siguro! Karga muna kami sa tsekot ng "lagkitan". Bili na kami ng ticket with matching hot dogs, popcorn and drinks (foodtrip!) pro bago pumasok namimigay ng libreng Kleenex. Aba, mas ayos ah!

Yun, pag labas namin ng sinehan mas mapula at mas maga pa ang mga mata namin sa kaiiyak when we first got in.

Kaya pala namimigay ng Kleenex! Crying trip ang pinasukan namin! :( :P :D

And there's GALA THEATRE and STA.CRUZ THEATER. Exciting! hehehe

  11. Anyone here remember

    YCAP

    Youth Civic Action Program

A mandatory 120 hours of civic service for all youth

OO nga, YCAP, ginawa namin to accumulate 120 hours, magtanim araw araw ng mga gulay at prutas. Tapos magpapapirma sa barangay chairman sa hour credits. Pero masaya naman, we do harvest the goods and took it home para lutuin. Pero come to think of it ang ganda ng kapaligiran, mas green kaysa ngayon (well, count in din na hindi naman overcrowded ang Manila during the 70s). Meron pang the CLEAN AND GREEN na competition per barangay (nanalo kami nun)

  12. As a Beatle fan, Lennon's murder dashed any hope of a true Beatles reunion. It would have been great had John been around in the mid-90s when Paul, George, and Ringo finally set aside their differences, reunited, and came out with the Beatles Anthology series of DVDs and CDs. That would have been something else, right?

Personally, Lennon is a huge influence not just on my political views but also on how I lead my personal life. I will leave it at that. :)

You are absolutely right, sayang nga. Failed to buy that Anthology CD, saan kaya makakabili ngayon nun? Super busy ako then kaya wala akong napanood sa TV-5 nuong mga araw na yun, although I have seen the MTV of FREE AS A BIRD, kinda nakakakilabot..parang trip through memory lane na in real time........we miss you John

  13. That was Dec. 9/80 in Singapore with my folks when we heard about the assassination. I just thought to myself that the Beatles reunion every fan was praying for was not really going to happen after all. That was a sad day to

    pop culture. :(

I heard of the assassintion when i was still at the stairway of our house sa sampaloc (wala na, nasunog na yung house) when my mom broke the news. I was stunned and could not believe it at first. But that was in the 80s when the networks are not full of tsismis, press releases sa showbiz etc. so I accepted the news as really that true (well, basta hindi tungkol sa politics during that time). Hurriedly, I went up and turned on the radio and TV and, there it was, the news all spread out in Special Editions. I almost cried and hatred filled my heart on whoever did that darn thing. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE was the theme song of the day and the first filipino who aired a special about the event was the late Bobby Ledesma together with some interviews with the rock legends of the time.....Pepe Smith, Mike Hanopol, the APO, etc.

  14. I remember My Sweet Lord lording it over the airwaves back in "74 - it was really such a monster hit. Every radio station that time seemed to be playing it every hour! :D

I still have George's Cloud Nine album both in LP and cassette format :P Great tunes there, with super artists like Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne (of ELO), Ringo Starr, Elton John all lending their contributions...

The record label George Harrison established when he went solo was very apt. George Harrison was always the Dark Horse in the Beatles lineup :P

    cheers, pare! kitakits uli!

The album included the number one hit single "My Sweet Lord", over which Harrison was later sued for copyright infringement due to the supposed similarities to the 1963 Chiffons single "He's So Fine". Harrison denied deliberately stealing the song, but he lost the resulting court case in 1976. In the ruling, the court accepted the possibility that Harrison had "unconsciously copied" the Chiffons melody as the basis for his own song. Disputes over damages dragged on into the 1990s, with manager Allen Klein changing sides by buying Bright Tunes, which published "He's So Fine", and continuing the suit after parting with Harrison, and Harrison ultimately winding up as the owner of both songs. happy ending, pre

  15. Pards, tama ka. I stand corrected on that. He did hit No.1 a number of times during the 70s. I based my statement on an old Casey Kasem show I saw several years back pero I probably misunderstood the context.

And also may gf din siya before Linda.....maganda..si Jane Asher

  16. Yah im a newbie :D well I was born in the 70's but i didn't really experience the 70's atmosphere kasi bata pako nun e, I grew up in the 80's hehehe. But I remember my mom used to let me wear bell bottom jeans hehehe I think I was 5 yrs old then. Thanks for welcoming me Pare Cheers!!
