  1. huh? Pasaknungan sa sta cruz?

    no no

    Pasaknungan is a violin ensemble that had imeldific as their benefactor.

    the group usually played when international dignitaries came over during the time of macoy, eg van cliburn, pope paul VI, etc.

    pag gustong magpasiklab ni koymax sa mga bwisita niyang international (also during imee's, bong2, irene's bday in malacanang, etc.), pasaknungan and pangkat kawayan were the ones, and the only ones, who were called to perform, no one else. this was during the 70s.

    =============================================================

    hehehe, i was referring to Mayor Lacson, whose status now stands in Sta.Cruz in front of Isetann.

  2. right!

    nang lalo nang tumagal: Ang Hayop sa Lupa

    hehehe

  4. Let me just make some correction..concubine is the proper label to describe her relationship with Dolphy. ..LOTIS KEY is ONE of the girlfriends who can lay claim to be one of Dolphy's the longest non-live in relationship - (9) years (she came AFTER Eric Quizons' Mom and before ALMA MORENO) ...She was the ONE Dolphy wanted to MARRY. Sa lahat ng naging serious involvement ni Dolphy dito lang siya HINDI nagkaanak..which was the reason why they broke up...and the wise decision of LOTIS not too have any...She is now happily married to a Pinoy and they reside in the Minneapolis-St. Paul. She works for an AIRLINE company as a Customer Service Supervisor. ..so if any of you happen to be in the Twin Cities area, at nagkaproblema sa airport..humingi kayo ng saklolo :-) Despite her popularity (and to some unfounded notorieity) she was never THAT showbiz. She was a family friend and was an "Ate" figure to me. She is even more beautiful IN person, and AS A PERSON...If she stayed, she would be a a good character actress playing mother roles in today's telenovela.

    ==========================================================

    Ummm, nice piece of trivia. Where does Pilar Pilapil comes in? I think she came ahead of Alma in Pidol's lovelife. by the way...BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TITO DOLPHY!!! Hanggang ngayon, no one ever comes close to you entertaining us.

  5. so you've most probably heard of The Pasaknungan?sabi nga. mayor's initials were AHL

    Ito ba yung baha during the month of September, I think its 1971? halos isang buwan na wala tigil ang ulan. Naalala ko pa nuon sa amin sa Musa St. Dapitan, Sampaloc. Ni minsan hindi kami inaabutan ng baha pero during the last day of the torrential rain....halos abutin na kami. I think two weeks atang walang pasok nuon. My late mom nagpunta pa sa burol sa Pampanga, namangka sa ibabaw ng North Expressway............and the hit song then was "starry starry night" by Don Maclain and "Got to be There" by The Jackson Five (ipit pa boses ni Michael nuon)

    =========================================================

    Thank you.....Sana nga may EB. one heck of "memory down the lane". Loved those years (70s). Teens....high school.....martial law (?).....discipline.....no chop chops......bata at naglalaro pa si osama bin laden......no congress......less politics....hehehe. joke lang.

  12. hehe naging malaking tsismis ito nung 70s.

    the story was the real Bongbong was killed in a fight with some European prince/monarchy that allegedly got Irene (or was it Ime?) pregnant. It was all hush-hush kunwari.

    And the Bongbong that appears here in Manila was actually a "cousin" who underwent plastic surgery to resemble the real one.

    Yung fake na Bonbong was maliit daw compared to the real one na matangkad.

    kalat na kalat itong balitang ito but since it was the height of the martial law years, people talked about it in whispers wary of the metrocom being around at baka madampot.

    This prompted ferdie to pass a law, or presidential decree called "Rumor Mongering"

    hehe those were the days

    ============================================================

    Jukebox king nuon was Victor Wood na naloko din sa politics nowadays. Meron ding rumor nuon na Bongbong shot Wood sa hita dahil sa selos.

  13. Yesss. Nakakaloko nga yung remote sa rotary selector. :thumbsupsmiley:

    Naalala nyo rin siguro yung gas rationing tapos biglang taas ng gas. Nagkaroon pa ng black market.

    ============================================

    I also remember rationing din sa bigas. There were times na hinahaluan ng corn yung biags nuon because of the shortage. Can't recall the cause of the shortage.

  14. SUPERSTAR channel9

    Joe Quirino channel13 (tikit awi Jow! - take it away manong Joe)

    rotary tv channel selector, then push button before the remote control.

    Thank God for the remote control !

    ==========================================================

    Nuon, when we got our first TV with remote control.....meron pang cable connecting the controller sa TV. hahaha. When turning the dial sa remote you can also watch the rotary channel selector sa TV sabay sa pag ikot mo ng dial ng remote. Tinakot ko pa nga yung pinsan ko. Di ko sinabi yung remote so when he watched TV nagtago ako sa likod then turned the remote, karipas ng takbo thinking meron ghost sa sala namin (madilim pa naman)

  15. Anyone heard of ROSENDO BALINAS?

    =============================================

    Rosendo Balinas......a great chessmaster....

    News Item:

    Chess Grandmaster Balinas Dies

    Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas, jr. (Sept. 10, 1941 -- Sept. 24, 1998)

    Grandmaster Rosendo ("Bali" and "Junior" to his fans and loved ones) Balinas died at 10:45 a.m. Philippine time at his residence in Antipolo city, Philippines. He had liver cancer.

    A six time Philippine open chess champion and considered Asia's best chess player during the '60's, Grandmaster Balinas (a lawyer by profession) first gained international prominence by winning international tournaments in Singapore and Hong Kong.

    He tied for 1st with Yugoslav GM Svetozar Gligoric in the 1968 Philippine open. Prior to that, on September 1967, Balinas, then a national master, was the only Filipino player to play GM Bobby Fischer to a draw in their individual match, in the "Beat Bobby Fischer Series" in Manila, Philippines.

    Balinas' uncompromising opposition to the unethical practices of Florencio Campomanes, then the Philippine chess federation and FIDE Asian representative, kept him out of local and international competition. In 1995, Balinas, then an international master, was allowed to play at the intercession of the Executive Assistant to the Philippine President de Vega, and returned with vengeance during the 1975 Marlboro Chess Classic International Tournament.

    Balinas' electrifying win against the world championship candidates and Danish champion GM Bent Larsen, beating his pet "Larsen opening" in a blitz finish when Larsen resigned under threat of forced mate, was one of the most memorable chess scenes in Philippine chess as players and spectators applauded both competitors at the end. IM Balinas also defeated Russian champion GM Lev Polugaevski in a classic ending and Czechoslovakian champion GM Lubomir Kavalek in route to a 5/6th place finish, 1/2 point short of the GM norm. In this same tournament, the Philippine chess star and Asia's first Grandmaster Eugene Torre placed 9th/10th place.

    Rosendo Balinas, Jr.'s chess pinnacle occurred during the 1976 Moscow Central Chess Club International Tournament, Odessa, USSR, opposing Russian chess stars world candidate qualifiers GM David Bronstein, GM Korchnoi (who pulled out at the last minute), absolute Russian champion GM Vladimir Savon, Moscow chess champion GM Lutikov and young stars Tukmakov, Lerner, Lev Alburt, Ignatiev and other foreign GM's Espig, Tringov, Plachetka, and Tarjan. IM Balinas shocked the chess world by winning the tournament and going undefeated against all his Russian opponents.

    During this period, IM Rosendo Balinas, Sr. was only the 2nd foreigner in 35 years to win an international chess tournament in Russia, the "land of grandmasters". The only other foreigner who won in Russia was former world champion Jose Raoul Capablanca. For his feat, IM Balinas was awarded the Grandmaster title outright.

    GM Balinas' continuing feud with the more powerful now former FIDE president Campomanes forced his semi-retirement from chess competition. Without support from government or private patrons, Balinas established the Philippine Grandmaster school of chess. Among his former students are the 3rd Philippine Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio, Jr., international master Rick de Guzman and a host of masters. The most recent is the youngest Philippine master (10 years old) Oliver Barbosa.

    Grandmaster Rosendo Balinas, Jr. was the Philippine's national treasure and unsung hero by his fans and faithful, an uncompromising lawyer who stood up for the ideals of fairness, and who promoted chess excellence and pride of the Filipino people, till his dying days.

    Prior Report: Subject: Grandmaster Balinas is dying of cancer -- former Philippine and Asian chess champion considered the Philippine national treasure and unsung hero for his contribution to the Philippines, and Philippine chess, Grandmaster Balinas is in his last dying days. Indeed chess was and continues to be his passion, even during his waning years.

    Being ill during the last few years did not keep Grandmaster Balinas from playing chess -- especially in the US, winning a number of tournaments.

    His distinction and legacy as a six time Philippine Open chess champion, top Asian player during the '60s and the 2nd foreigner to win a chess tournament in Russia (after Capablanca) is probably overshadowed by his uncompromising stand (for close to 30 years) against Campomanes and his cohort (and still with FIDE) Casto Abundo for their abuse of position first with the Philippine Chess Federation and then with FIDE.

    Grandmaster Balinas obtained his GM title despite Campomanes' efforts to keep him out of international tournaments. Ironically it was Polugaevski, Bronstein and the Russian Chess Federation who recommended strongly his Grandmaster title be award.

    This was after Balinas' tournament win in the Moscow Chess Club International Tournament in Odessa, Russia, going undefeated against the Russian players.

    Joe Balinas

  16. Nice going elrey.

    Torre studied in Mapua I supposed. Sayang si Fischer. He wasn't able to defend his title.

    I also remember Mr Enercon. I think he was the model of Asyong Aksaya by the great cartoonist, Larry Alcala.

    =============================================================

    Sayang nga si Fischer. Weird kasi dahil sa sobrang genius.

    I also liked the cartoon Asyong Aksaya. Ang galing! Ngayon, daming Asyong Aksaya! Pati yung commercial ng Metro Manila Aide - I think its Adeng ata name niya at si Aling Otik

    By the way, nasaan na kaya si 'Wonder Boy"? Yung "future teller" na may bip sound pa kapag may iniisip siya. I remember din he was the one who advised Apo for Bongbong not to ride on a place that later crashed. Dami pang "hula" nya na nagkatotoo including yung last hula niya before he was booted out of malacanan na ang susunod na presidente will be a woman. Nagalit and na disappoint si madam.

  17. Meron pa rin niyan sa lugar namin ngayon.

    Balik sa Basketball

    Magaling ang teamwork nina Canent and Webb together with Cleofas, Elias Tolentino

    I was for Yco in the MICAA then Crispa in the PBA.

    From Wikipedia:

    Crispa’s beginnings are rooted in the old Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA). In 1971, a Crispa team composed of Reynaldo Alcantara, Rudolph Kutch, Ernesto de Leon, Rodolfo Soriano, Danilo Florencio, Johnny Revilla, Adriano Papa, Jr., William "Bogs" Adornado, Virgilio Abarrientos, Danilo Pecache, Domingo Celis, Jr. and Rey Franco played and lost to Meralco in the MICAA championships. This Crispa team was the precursor of the professional basketball team that will dominate the PBA.

    In 1973, authorities discovered that six of the team’s players had conspired with gamblers to drop a championship series against underdog Mariwasa. These six players, including four of the five starters (only Bogs Adornado was found innocent among the starting five), were served lifetime suspensions. With their line-up depleted, manager Valeriano “Danny” Floro and coach Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan were forced to rebuild. They opted to go with younger player by bringing in Mapúa Institute of Technology hotshot Fortunato “Atoy” Co, Jr. and Colegio de San Jose Recoletos standout Abet Guidaben in 1973, and Jose Rizal College’s Philip Cezar and RP Youth Team players Bernie Fabiosa and Alfredo "Freddie" Hubalde in 1974.

    ===============================================

    Am for Meralco naman nuon. Actually di ko na napanood yung Yco/Ysmael nuon. Late na ako nagkahilig sa basketball. I just remember idolizing Meralco kasi I like the way Mariano, Marquez, Bauzon, Lucindo plays. Bangko pa sina Arnaiz nuon. Meron pa nga silang Ross but di kok na nakitang naglaro. Natatandaan ko pa yung import nilang si Presley (patay na daw), one of the tallest nuon at 6'11" blocking every penetration of Tom Cowart of Crispa. Meralco won that championship game nuon.

  18. Sorry for you pre. Ako naman I lost my 1st 50 issues of X-Men sa baha sa Malabon plus some of my father's and his friends' artworks.

    Webb won!!!

    ==========================================================

    nanalo pala si Webb nuon. Thanks for refreshing my memory. Kinda wondering who won talaga nuon :thumbsupsmiley:

    By the way, yesterday I went to Malabon, the birthplace of the Roldans, super baha, parang Manila Bay na na reclaimed. During the 70s ba, talagang bahain na yun? Cant recall kasi nuon bata pa ako na pinapasyal ako duon ng aking late dad. I remember lang nuon na nangingisda kami sa "Fish Fun" but cant recall na rin kung saan yun dun sa Malabon.

  19. For me the best sa ilalim was Philip Cezar. The fastest naman noong Micaa days was Freddie Webb. Magaling sa steals, interception, layups and assist. Magaling din sa loob si Rudy Soriano. Ang mala-Barkley noon ay si Jimmy "Iron Man" Noblezada.

    Dading was 60s pa pero yung Yoling either 1970-71. 1 month na walang pasok dahil sa blackout.

    ===========================================================

    I remember din that Panorama magazine ran an article about pitting the two...yoyong martirez and freddie webb on a 100-meter dash sa Rizal Memorial Track....and the winner was....(nakalimutan ko na huhuhu). Sayang talaga sa tons of clippings ko ng MICAA players of the 70s. Compiled pa naman sa notebook. Well, nasunog sila last 1997 together ng bahay namin sa sampaloc.

  20. If im not mistaken, magkasama sina Rene CanenT n Philip Cezar dati sa JRC in the glory years of the NCAA. :headsetsmiley:

    ======================================================

    Correct me if am wrong. Mas nauna ata ng kaunti si rene canent kay philip cezar. Teammates of Philip then sa JRC were Carvajal and his brother David. Survivor si Philip. Canent played with Yco and Philip went to Crispa, then to Shell, after which to Ginebra.

  21. rainy season- dati ok ang baha, nakikita mo ang tinatapakan mo- hindi kulay itim tubig kanal. may isda (gurami) pa na lumalangoy sa tubig baha. alala ko may naligaw na pagong pa nahuli namin.

    typhoon Yoling and Dading ba un?

    ================================================

    Naglalaro pa kami sa baha nuon pero ngayon may disease na galing sa urine ng mouse that causes death kaagad. Hay naku, iba talagang ang 70s back! I do recall nga na kapag umulan nuon sa amin sa Dapitan near Albert Elementary School, ang ingay ng mga "kokak" ng palaka. Now dengue na ang result ng ulan. Also, nuong 70s H-fever ang scary thing, same sa dengue ngayon.

  22. Let's not forget Freddie Hubalde. During his MVP season (1977), he was unstoppable inside. Really unstoppable.

    As for Carvajal, I believe he suffered an accident that left him in a coma. He hit his head on the board. At the time he was the tallest player in the country. I believe he played for Crispa.

    =============================================================

    Hubalde is really unstoppable (hindi nga lang buwaya kundi marami pa sanang MVP awards nakuha niya and kung hindi star studded ang Crispa nuon) especially those bank shots (traces of the old Lucindo of Meralco then Mariwasa)

    Before Carvajal, the tallest was "Big Ben". This monster of a Pinoy was 7'2" in height pero mabagal and a slow learner. Elizalde of Yco got interested in him and trained him for his team. he played in exhibition matches but was cut kasi nga, di talaga puwede. He went on appearing in movies and died in the 70s. Was buried at Manila North Cemetery.

    Iba iba ang lumabas na dahilan sa cause of death ni Carvajal. There are reports then that he hit his head while running towards the dugout sa Rizal Coliseum after a rumble. Alam naman natin ang baba ng player exit/entrance sa Rizal Coliseum. Dont know whats the latest about the man.
