  1. Smart Gilas, just like Japeth Aguilar is One Big Hype.

    Exactly my point ....

Its not even the NBA but the CBA or the NBA Developmental League. kung si Giles would accept $15k a month to play here that means he get paid better here than in the US leagues.

In that sense, do you think japeth would play here if teams in the minor leagues would like to get him.

  2. As for Burger King, they are just like crying babies ... at this point considering Japeth have not signed a contract they have no legal basis to hold against him. What they currently own is his draft rights. In the NBA, if a player drafted can't agree on a contract with his mother team and forego playing with any other team for a year he can re-apply for the draft. Am not sure what the PBA has on its rules as to such case but seems like there is none at the moment thus BK is lobbying to the office of the commissioner for proper sanctions. Well dito natin makikita ang palabra de honor ni Japeth ... if he really meant what he says and that is to play for the RP team then no matter what sanctions would be imposed on him by the PBA for turning his back then he should stick by what he said. Otherwise, mukahang pera-pera na naman ito.

Have read in the papers that says that a player automatically becomes a free agent if he and the team can't agree 2 seasons after getting drafted ... With that, dapat pa bang humingi ang BK ng "special sanction"?

Ang sinasabi, the above only applies pag may di napagkakasunduan sa contract negotiations and apparently since the max was offered there should be nothing to be of disagreement.

  3. We all could only speculate what really transpired why suddendly Japeth had a change of heart ... whatever the main reason was only one thing remains certain... This is not for FLAG and COUNTRY as their press release states. If Japeth really wanted to play for the Gilas team / Country he would have not joined the PBA draft. As it is, his initial action can only refute what he is saying now.

I suspect, it has something to do with MONEY MATTERS. We all know that there is a standard salary scale for rookies. However, these players can get "EXTRA PERKS" which would essentially raise his total package (financial + non financial perks). Am sure we've heard that during the time of Paras, he was given the max salary + a Shell franchise. Most San Miguel top players of the past and present also have a SMC dealership ... Calma. Fernandez. ildefonso to name a few.

  4. SMART GILAS ... is this the answer? This is the question posed on this forum.

As what we've observed so far. some like me believe this is the way to go for RP basketball while some claims otherwise.

For me the best way to answer that is I guess WE ALL WOULD NEVER KNOW ... until the day comes. However, I guess this is a good start since there is one BODY taking full responsibility (the SBP) and has come up with a masterplan on how they intend to have it done. Whether they succeed or not is a different story. Lets not dwell too much on the players for the meantime... players do come and go. what is important would be the program to be in place and the execution to ensure continuity.

If you would look at other countries, it is not the major professional league that calls the shot for that country's basketball program but the country's NSA for basketball. A case for example would be USA Basketball where the NBA is merely represented in that organization and throws its full support + the NBA players, whoever chosen gives its commitment.

The PBA has been in the forefront of this undertaking since 1990 but restricted itself to ABC/FIBA championships only. In fact the PBA has openly said that they intend to let the SBP take the lead and will just throw its full support. By such, then I think it is clear that even the PBA acknowledge that they can;t take full responsibility for the future of Phil Basketball because they have a different mission/objective as an institution. If they are true to its word, then probably the best thing they could do is to assist the SBP is whatever ways they can.

  5. they still have not developed that tendency to "show boat" or play for the crowd. That is why most of the teams that do well in international tournaments are teams that execute and pass well.

  6. 2 ISSUES:

First, I definitely agree regarding exposures to international tournaments ... this is one of the training methods for them to familiarize with the FIBA rules as well as international brand of play.

Second, should we rethink of sending PBA players again if we fail in the 2011 FIBA? ... I just want to point out that the PBA/Pro players have been representing the country in the ABC/FIBA meet since 1990 and have experimented on various formula but so far none has work out quite well too. As we've all know the performance has deteriorated since that 2nd place finish.

I just think it is quite unfair that the SBP & Gilas Team (the system and the players) would be given an "ultimatum for them to prove its worth in a single attemp. At this point I think the most we could aspire for is a final 4 and no guarantees to earn a slot in the 2012 Olympics. In fact while I bat for the Gilas team, I am conceding that chances of this team in the next FIBA maybe slim to none. But ofcourse as Filipino, I wish I could be proven wrong.

What am saying is that let's give the SBP being the local basketball governing body a free hand on how to shape up RP basketball in the future. And looking at where we at now, don't expect an immediate major turnaround. It definitely would be a long way back.

  7. Only China have a professional league... Yung Iran maybe all of us know na mhirap yung country due to trade embargo. Or nagpupunta sa malapit na bansa to play.

would you care to expound on your statement? Are you implying that IRAN has no professional league at all which is counter to what have been presented a few post before or you are saying that this professional league no longer exist?

  8. Ex-Los Angeles Lakers CJ Giles has finally signed a one-year contract to play as import -- and possibly a naturalized player -- for the Smart-Gilas developmental team preparing for various international events next year.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala said on Saturday that Giles, an athletic 6-foot-10 center, is expected to come to the Philippines on September 1 to start training with the rest Gilas squad under Serbian mentor Rojko Toroman.

"We're really excited to have CJ in the line-up," Eala said yesterday.

The SBP is now in the process to naturalize Giles, 24, through Congress with the help of Rep. Robbie Puno, who heads the Youth and Sports Development committee.

Eala refused to divulge the exact amount of Giles' one-year deal, but he mentioned that it is close to the salary of a PBA import, which is approximately $15, 000 a month or P8.64 million spread over one year.

The SBP has also the option to extend the contract depending on the performance of Giles, who recently played for the Denver Nuggets during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas where he averaged 7.2 points and 7 rebounds.

According to Eala, the contract of Giles also includes a service car and a house, "and he can also bring in his brother and three-year-old son."

Giles actually played as import of the Gilas in the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia several months back, where he played alongside amateur stalwarts like Mark Barroca, Dylan Ababou, JV Casio, Chris Tiu, and RJ Jazul. Waylon Galvez - Manila Bulletin]

I'm just wondering what will be the reactions are.

If you will ask me, well I guess it is a good move in terms of strengthening our national team but I dont think that most of Filipinos will agree for us having so much pride to be rescued by an American the second time around.

Using naturalized players in general as a means to strengthen the team is an acceptable practice under the guidelines set by the FIBA. However, as to the issue of "PRIDE" on the victory gained through such, its a big debate.

Liberals will say as long as it is within the rules, there is nothing wrong specially other country also have the same practice. On the other hand, PURIST will say that the victory is diminished for reasons very obvious.

Again even with a naturalized player in Giles, realistically I still don't like our chances of a final 4 finish in 2 years time for the 2011 FIBA Olympic Qualifier ... worst I think only the top 2 would qualify. However, I still hope for the best and wish to be proven wrong.

  9. Good intention, but bad idea.

The BEST athletes will still gravitate towards whatever sport/league that will pay them the most. And players are on a very strict timeline. They have a an expiration date.

Just re-invent the PBA, to accomodate the current realities of basketball in Asia (and the current rut the PBA is on). Being "nationalistic" is what will save the PBA!

"The best athele will still gravitate towards who will pay them most" ... I AGREE, example would be Rico M., Ogie Menoe and Japeth A whol are all being recruited for the Gilas team but decided to turn pro. Again, basketball is a means of livelihood for them thus money/pay is important. Di natin alam kung ano ang naging offer sa kanila ng Gilas Team but my guess is that it could be less than what they potentially could earn in the PBA. Now dito masusubukan din un NATIONALISM ng player. Willing ba siya to forgo some income for the flag? Some of them would ... others won't as the case.

  10. Boss:

I agree that they can play the way they want to. But even if you employ the system you want, you can't see the fruits of it playing in the PBA. Ang problem lang is the competition they will be seeing in the PBA is still so different from what they will be seeing in international play. I wasn't around during the NCC days, so I have no opinion on that. But today, why risk it? You have an international-style team in the Smart-Gilas team. Why risk them developing the bad habits that you wanted them not to in the first place?

I also agree that its the most inexpensive way to develop chemistry. But, should that be a hindrance? I am not saying that they should live in the states or in Europe. Join 2-week tournaments here and there. Play exhibition games here in the Philippines against top-quality international teams (Qatar, Lebanon, etc.). Hopefully, MVP/Smart has allocated a lot for the Philippine team.

Re: your comment on the confidence level of these players. These players are young, I agree. But, I do not think that these are greenhorns that you have to cradle as well. These players signed up to the program, understanding that its a long-term project. Why would there confidence be shaken if they lose early? And if it does, I'd rather we find out now so we can replace them this early. No point in training if they are of weak heart and character.

    Good discussion. Keep it up.

In basketball you have what you call OFFENSIVE and DEFENSIVE patters. These are basic patterns you try to establish for the team irregardless of who the opponent would be.

Kung ang systema sa opensa for example is that a player should not have more than 3 dribbles and there should be at least 3 passes before shooting the ball then it will be the system no matter what. Now kung ang players will stick to that system while playing in the PBA then it will become 2nd nature to them when they play internationally. In that sense that would be the dividend they get while playing in the PBA.

Sa defensive patterns naman, it will depend on whether the PBA will allow the national team to use Zone which is not allowed in the PBA. They could practice their full court or half court press if they so desire. On half courts, they can make use of honing their straight man to man defense or the man-zone defense.

Again, going back to the 80's since the PBA use professional rules when the NCC team played as a guest squad, coach Ron Jacobs often employ the man-zone as well as the press.

As to gaining chemistry while playing I think there is no argument about this, it all boils down whether do we play internationally or locally. Am not suggesting that we forget the international competition. What I am saying here is we hone our skills by playing locally in the PBA then test our skill levels/improvements by joining international tournaments. The PBA battle should do them more good since it will be better than just scrimmage ... eto actula game situations wherein players tend to experience real game situations and will eventually learn how to react accordingly. As they say there is no better teacher than experience.

Finally,as far as loosing is concerned that would lower the confidence level of the BOYS ... I didn't think I said that but here's my thoughts ...first and foremost, the intent to join the PBA if allowed is not only to be the training ground but also to win. Ofcourse winning would be secondary as long as the team would be able to achieve the more urgent agenda they have for participating. Will loosing affect the confidence of the boys? Well, I don't think so ... coz most of these players look up to the PBA players. As such I see is as more of a WINNING situation. Why? Well dito pa lang sa thread na ito we all agree that talent wise the PBA players would be up and above the Gilas Team diba? SO in that sense, bakit ka madidismaya if you know you lose to a better player. Now hindi maiwasan na may pagkakataon na ganyan nga ang maging pagiisip ng players lalo na un hindi pa mature, then this is where the coaching staff should come in and continue to MOTIVATE these guys. On the other hand, assuming they would be able to go toe to toe with the PBA teams ... hindi ba isang malaking moral booster ito?

China has their "professional league" called the CBA. They also have the CBL which is a division 2 "minor league" which can be parallel to our PBL.

Iran has the Iranian Basketball Super League.

I guess the way to view your query is that it is no longer a distinction whether a league is deemed as professional or amature specially with the advent of OPEN BASKETBALL. Before kasi, pros can not represent their country in international competition thus they try to maintain their amature status kahit na binabayaran din ang mga players. Ofcourse they use different terminologies for the money received calling it an allowance instead of salary.

  12. Boss:

if you let them play in the PBA, they would develop PBA-brand habits (reliance on one-on-one, too much dribbling, little ball movements, too much post-ups), which would be detrimental to their development in terms of international play. They should join the Euro League or something. Or just follow the Iran/China teams around. If the Iran/China teams play in a given tournament, sali den tayo. Mukha tayong saling-pusa but there's no better way to get better than playing with the right type of competition.

Wel that would be the case if coach RAJO will adapt the PBA style of play ... however, the Gilas Team can actually play the system they intend to develop while playing in the PBA.

NCC joined and won a conference in the PBA, I don't think they adopted to the PBA system of 1 on 1 plays then. On the positive note this is an inexpensive way to build teamwork in a competitive scenario.

  13. I dont think ceiling is would be the issue for the Gilas team. As it is, Gilas is actually taller than most PBA teams.

What they do lack is experience, cohesiveness and court sense...sa madaling salita, gulang

I do think that they're on the right track.

Im not sure if Norwood, Aguilar and/or Dillinger's current home teams have given the green light on them joining the Gilas team, not with the recent statements of Toroman (and SBP) and Guiao (PBA)

I guess by international standards, this Gilas team will be small since our PG and SG are mere 6'0 or less. our wings are at least 6'2 and the froncourt players at least 6'5. China I believe boat of a line-up that has no player standing 6'3 below. Add to that a frontline standing at leat 6'7 not to mention the couple of 7 footers.

Nevertheless, while height is might, its not the only factor. Surely we have this problem as one of our weakness but it is really up to the coaching staff to find ways on how to offset this.

  14. good point by peithe...

hmm, for the nation, i guess smart gilas should get SOME players from PBA.. like norwood dillinger and i think sol mercado..or whoever they think could help them win..

    what do u think guys?

I doubt if papayag ang ibang teams na may additional draft pick na kapalit. But I think its part now of the mother team's moral obligation to the flag whether they will or will not agree to lending the players being requested.

  15. used to listed on 918 every 11 am during saturdays, un program ni Aida G. Guest parati dun si Danny Espiritu. He gave an update on the Gin Kings and mentioned that hindi pa na finalized un composition ng team. menk for example is expected to be retained but have not signed a contract. I think that team manager Samboy as well as Allan C are still in the US for some exhibition games of the PBA Legends ... Baka by next month pa maayos ang official line-up.

what I know so far is that Cabatu, Pacana, Escalona, Se, Lanete are some of the Gin King players that have been release/trying out with other teams.

Sa new additions, I think Mark Isisp has joined them.

  16. The most logical proven formula to date is still the NCC masterplan ... it started with theRP Youth and the core of this team remained intactfor the ABC Tournament, with some changes along the way to include new promising players. I think this is what the SMART Gilas team is trying to emulate.

As I have made my stand in the other thread, the POWERADE PBA-backed team may be the stonger team talent wise but it may not be the most prepared one. The PBA first and foremost objective is revenues and "commercial exposure" to its shareholders. Yes the PBA adjusted its schedule to allow its players to play for the country during offseason but do you honestly think that they would be able to fit in the min 3 international tournament each year. Aside from this its not only a matter of playing together in tournaments, these players will also have to train/practice together whole year round.

Sad to say, the Powerade team for example hardly could come up with the complete rooster when they practice at the time the PBA is still on-going since they would not dare pullout the players whose team are still in contention. So most of the time the players of Burger King were asked to attend in order to have enought players for the scrimmage.

I am all for the Gilas Team playing as a "guest squad" in the PBA but are qualified to win the championship ... this was mababatak talaga sila ng husto and the PBA players can't play it loose against them since there is something at stake.

  17. Bat naman napasama pa si Bondying Enricups???

Puro bangkong atenista ang pinagkukuha a! Alvarez, Bugia, Kramer, Escalona... pasalamat si Intal nakakascore siya against ROS last time.

fyi, Escalona has been released and is trying his luck with COKE. Its unlikely though that he'll get the nod.

  18. how about jay jay helterbrand? is he still in line up. ang tulin ng bk na ito. sana 100% n si caguioa. I miss his attitude and mindset...

I think The SPARK is expected to be in game shape upon the start of the season.

  19. puro nman tiamba pnalo ng LASALLE eh!!!!

ung sa ADAMSON & UST, nkalusot lng cla!!!!

ang 22o nyan eh dpat 2 lng pnalo nla!!!

    dpat 2-5 cla ngaun!!!!

    .

"chamba" ... well that still counted as a win since its unfortunate that the other team did not play hard enough to win right?

Ateneo won last night ... kudos!!! Still am happy for DLSU despite the loss since who would have thought that it will be that close. needing an OT to win. The "veterans" of DLSU so far have a lousy season ... its the rookies and sophomores that have been stepping up.

d pa ba siya nilaglag sa line-up? dami na kasi nila players and only a handfull can be place sa "injured list" otherwise pwedeng kunin ng ibang team. As it is MArk and Junthy is there na last season.

  21. Hay ...

Anyway, I think OK naman ito ... we got younger sa big in RICO, Paolo and RICH palit kay Raffi. Artadi with his greatly improved plays at BGK from how he played then with Purefoods will surely be miss. Timberlake had a good finals for Harbour Center which won him the Finals MVP but I don't think he's real good. In fact he's just the back-up at HC.

Overall, we're deep pa din sa guards with JJ and Chico playing the major minutes. Then celino may provide veteran experience at crucial moments plus dyan pa din si pacana. Sa 2 guards we have Caguioa, Tubid, Junthy, Cyrus. I expect Tubid and Junthy to play more of the 2/3 positions coz mahina tayo sa wing ... well dyan pa din si Sunday.

Mukhang reunion ng mga taga Ateneo itong BGK now, they have around 5 ex-Ateneo players.

  22. Sometimes you wonder ... teams like red bull and burger king kept on unloading their top players to other teams for less quality players and maybe draft picks.

Sa totoo lang, if they would only kept these players in their fold, they could be consistent champion teams na. But sadly, nagiging negosyo. The team may be trying to cut payroll cost by unloading high salaried stars and in return stay competitive in the rebuilding process by getting quality players from the draft.

Heard from the grapevines that hindi lang player + draft pick ang naging kapalit ni arwin. SMB did also shell out a lot of moolah
