  1. recently sold my nikon d60

now.. am having a hard time getting a replacement camera

since i am no pro, even if i could somehow shell out the money, am not that 100% on the nikon d300

some say, get the nikon d80, hmmm.. its a 2 year old model, nevertheless, i was able to use one and i liked it. D90 is coming out soon.. should i wait for it?

so i ask, i want something better than the d80, a friend said, shift to canon and get the 40D, better than the D80 and not expensive as the D300.

    your take fellas?

Best to wait for a few more weeks. Photokina happens in late September, so by then you'll know what new models from all the manufacturers are coming out and when they'll be available. Best bet is that there will be a Nikon D90, Sony A900, and Canon 5DII announcement.

  2. guys tnx for the feedback, well i just want to take some pictures and see if it works for me, maybe more of a hobby. im sorry but what do you mean "prosumer?" is 30-35k enough to get me one of those cameras that i can start with?

Typical "prosumer" cams are the Canon S5IS, G9, Panasonic LX2, etc.

These cost anywhere from 18k to 29k.

Their main advantage is that they come with pretty good built-in lenses. They usually have faster lenses than the normal P&S cameras (F/2.8 on the wide end). They also have options for full manual controls. They're also really compact, so you can take pics nearly anywhere without guards hassling you.

The biggest advantage of a DSLR is the picture quality. You can go up to ISO 1600 on some DSLRs and still get something decent. The auto-focus is also much faster. The biggest complaint against DSLRs is the price of the good lenses and accessories (like a flash). It's a real money pit for a newbie. Choose wisely!

  3. It's kinda sad to see more new Corollas on the streets than new Lancers. If I had the money, I would definitely choose the Lancer over the Corolla. Mitsubishi is taking a big risk with the new Lancer with the aggressive styling and strong engine. That puts it miles ahead of the new Corolla in my book.

  4. Collections:

Comics (although lately, puro TPBs, Hardcovers, and Absolute Editions lang)

Toy Robots (Macross + Transformers Masterpiece Series)

Star Wars crap (although medyo lapsed na ako dito)

  5. Why not get an angle finder instead? Its cheaper and works on existing cameras rather than buying an expensive DSLR with "Live View"

DSLRs with "Live View" suffers on focusing when using it most of the time.

I tried using an angle viewfinder before, and while useful, it does have its limitations. I was recently at a product shoot and the photographer was using the live view and manual focus on his 40D. He let me try his setup in between layouts, and I have to say I prefer the live view with manual focus because you can see the cropping much faster than using a viewfinder. Also, your back won't hurt as much since you don't have to keep bending over.

In a studio setting, live view certainly has its advantages. Once you move into sports or event photography though, I really don't think its that useful.

  6. brainstorm muna tayo dito....eto topic ko .....WHY is MARVEL COMICS ouselling DC COMICS ?

Para sakin i think mas consistent ang MARVEL compare sa DC ( even though DC fan ako ) at maskunti ang flaws compare sa DC. maskina sa movie mas maganda compare sa DC. storylines much better. thats what i feel. kayo?

Probably because Marvel's been pirating most of the great talent out there...Marvel's got a really good line-up of writers and artist in their stable compared to DC. For the writers alone, you've got Ed Brubaker, Mike Carey, Warren Ellis, Mark Millar, Robert Kirkman, and Brian Bendis to name a few. Until a few years ago, these were the names that DC relied on for their titles.

Is Greg Rucka still doing Batman? What's Brian Azzarello up to now? Because aside from those two and Grant Morrisson, they're the only heavy writers I can think of in DC's camp.

Plus DC's choice of pencillers for their top titles is inconsistent...some of the art just doesn't look like it belongs in a major title like Batman or Superman....Marvel loves to attach recognizable pencillers to their major titles to help boost sales.

  7. I plan to buy a Canon 450D soon, but I got a bit disappointed when I was recently told that most DSLRs don't enable a live panel view of the image that one intends to shoot. Is this true?

If it is, then are there any DSLRs at all that offer such a view?

I guess to specify the question further, which DSLRs have this functionality and which do not? Thanks!

The 450D can focus with live preview, matagal nga lang. Pang studio shots lang puede. This goes for most DSLRs.

I think the Nikon D3 and D300 can also focus in live preview mode. The latest Olympus DSLRs can also focus in live preview mode (E3, E510, E420). Not sure which Sony cams have this feature though.

  8. im planning to buy a DSLR Camera just as a hobby. can anyone recommend a nice DSLR camera for a Hobbyist like me? and what do you think of the cannon eos 300D, 350D,400D and Pentax k110D? is it worth buying? what other cameras would you recommend? under Php25,000 if meron. Thanks!

The Pentax is a really good camera...unfortunately, you'll have a tough time getting good lenses at good prices. Maybe if you're in a richer country, this would be a good option.

Stick with either a Canon or a Nikon. There are a lot of users out there, so buying new or used lenses is easy.

Personally, I would go for a Canon because the 350D / 400D / 450D offer so much more than the Nikon D40 / D60. Canon's high ISO performance is much better in the entry-level DSLRs than Nikon's. The Canon also offers more focusing points and more third party lenses.

The problem is your budget...at that price, you might have to get a used camera. A used 350D kit is around 19K, a used 400D kit is around 27K. A used D40 kit is about 22K.

  9. Yeah, 1997-1998 really sucked for mainstream comics. I remember that was around the time I also quit because of the horrible storylines. Onslaught was pretty interesting for the first 3 or 4 issues. But after that, it was all downhill. And the Marvel storylines after Onslaught were just mind-numbingly boring. No direction whatsover (Heroes Reborn, Heroes Return, Operation Zero Tolerance....all rubbish!) DC at the time had some decent storylines, but the art was just pathetic. It was like they were intentionally getting sub-par artists.

I only started collecting comics again because of Grant Morisson's run on X-men and Alan Moore's ABC comics (Top Ten!). Thank God Marvel finally came to their senses and pirated DC Vertigo's best writers (Milligan, Morisson, Ennis, Ellis, Vaughan, Carey, Brubaker, etc.) I've been enjoying Brubaker and Rucka's run on the Batman titles, but suddenly DC f*(%$ things up with Hush, Infinite Crisis and 52. I'm hoping Grant Morisson save the DC Universe from itself and from its editors when he finishes Final Crisis. I've really enjoyed his work on All-Star Superman. But what I really want is for him to FINISH his long-delayed Authority.

1986, bro? Wow! That means you had comics in the Bronze Age (late 70's)? Those are the comics that I really want.. Especially Marvel stuff.. Ang gaganda ng mga storylines nun ng Spiderman, Daredevil at Xmen..

Well, in my case, I started reading them in 1983 (Grade three ako) and stopped at around 1987 (High School).. But because of budget constraints hindi madami ang comics ko.. And all are dilapidated, coz I never knew that comics (even imported ones) should be taken cared of because its value can escalate.. Kaya ayun, may mga pangalan at tape on the spine mga comics ko na binili ko when I was younger.. hahaha..

I collected them again voraciously in 1991 up to 1996.. And stopped at around 96-97 after I got tired of the "lame" stories in Spiderman and X-Men (e.g., Clone Saga and the Onslaught Saga of Marvel).. Even DC had stupid storylines like the Death of Clark Kent, the stupid Terminal Velocity in Flash.. Wala naman talagang major na nangyayari sa mga comics nun, when I stopped.. Kaya hindi ko nakuha yung Ultimate Spiderman at Ultimates.. Sayang coz the first issues of Ultimate Spiderman is really pretty expensive now..

I decided to come back when I saw Marvel's House of M.. I back-tracked a little bit to get some storyarcs like Hush, JLA/Avengers, Avengers Disassembled, New Avengers: Breakout, etc.. Nagagandahan din ako sa mga storyarcs ngayon eh, so I decided to stick around.. And boy! Masaya talaga ako sa nakikita ko.. except for the One More Day saga of Spiderman, which really broke my heart.. haha..

The Sinestro Corps, the Messiah Complex, even the Xmen's Fall and Rise of the Shi'ar Empire were wonderful reads.. This is the time to get excited for comics.. I just hope tuloy tuloy na ang mga wonderful storyarcs that matter at hindi maging puros art lang ang maganda (kamukha nung mid-90's)..

  10. Bose is grossly overpriced. I don't know why so many people insist that bose is the best...just because their models can play loud music without breaking up doesn't mean its good. My former boss had a Bose sound system in his office, while the guy in the office next to him had the Klipsch Pro Media system. No contest. He sold the Bose within a week. Even at normal volume, you could pick up the little details from the Klipsch that wasn't noticeable from the Bose. Tested it with a few Radiohead albums.

  11. Great photos, unfortunately iba ang subjects ko eh, astronomical.

    Anyway, i got a question.

What brand and model of digicam (SLR) can you recommend that has the following specifications:

    1) tag price of 10,000 to 30,000

    2) Infinity focus

    3) Manual focusing

    4) Interchangeable lenses

    5) Manual shutter control (I'm shooting from 5 to 15 minute exposures)

    6) At least 5 megapixels.

    7) Has repair centers all over Manila.

    8) ISO 3200

    Thanks in advance

Don't all SLRs have interchangeable lenses with manual focusing and focus set to infinity?

Anyway, the killer requirement you're looking for is ISO 3200...at that ISO, anything but the most expensive DSLRs will produce unusable pics for astronomic use. There's going to be too much noise. The only cameras I can think of with decent ISO 3200 capabilities are the Canon 5D, 1DMkIII, and the Nikon D3. All of which are several times over your budget.

  12. friend of mine is selling me his canon 30d... how much is a second hand cam of this type? is this a good cam? i am a COMPLETE ignoramus about this so any inputs will help...

    thanks guys.

its around 32 to 38K depending if there is a kit lens included and how many shots its taken...a DSLR unlike a point-and-shoot has a certain lifespan of clicks. In this case, the 30D is rated at 100,000 shutter actuations. Generally, anything less than 10K clicks is considered low mileage.

A few words of advice...if you're not sure about getting an expensive camera, then don't buy it. Chances are you won't be using it as much as you should. Plus, anybody who has upgraded to a DSLR will tell you that the camera is only the first thing you'll buy...next is the flash, next is a better lens, next is another better lens, and so on and so forth.

I'm not sure which shops in Hidalgo are participating in the promo, if there are any.

For what it's worth, the 24-70L was going for around 62K at Hidalgo several months ago. This can give you an estimate on how much the difference there is between Hidalgo prices and products from the official Canon distributor.

Personally, if I was going to get a telephoto lens, I would go for the 70-200 F4 IS. I'm not sure if Canon will extend the sale any more past Jan 31, since na-extend na yung sale since Jan 15.

Your best bet is Canon D-Zone MOA or Trinoma. Meron din Canon D-Zone sa North Edsa Carpark and Glorietta Level 4.

Walang kwenta yung Canon sa Megamall.

  14. hi masters....

what shop in hidalgo do you buy your equipment from?

i'm planning to buy a new lens and medyo kinakabahan ako kasi mahal...

    thanks...

mayer's and henry's usually...but if you're looking for a canon lens, i suggest you run to the nearest Canon D-zone or camerahaus because they've got a lot of lenses on sale until the end of January (dapat hanggang 15th lang, but they opted to extend the sale). The advantage of buying at Canon is the local warranty because some of the lenses bought at Hidalgo don't have local warranty...you'll have to return it to the shop you bought it from and they'll be the ones to arrange for it to be fixed.

  15. well, it cost you 7K because you had it fixed by the local distributor of the brand. i brought the cam to hidalgo in quiapo and i was told that the cleaning of the body and the lens together with the fixing of the shutter would set me back 1,300. its a nice deal for me. and i'm not having it fixed because of anything but sentimental value. anyway, thank you for your insight, and i am actually planning to buy another camera.

Actually, I was wondering why it cost so much, so I found the old receipt, and found out they had to replace the prism and several parts of the shutter assembly and something related to the internal metering, which they had to order from japan. it wasn't just simple cleaning, it was pretty much a rebuild / refurbishing. your old SLR may have survived the neglect in better condition than mine.

  16. i think you're beter off just buying a used film SLR. Having it repaired is going to cost about the same thing. I learned this the hard way....Had my old minolta cleaned and repaired by the local distributor about 5 years back. it cost about 7K then. Nowadays, that's the cost of a used film SLR with modern electronics, auto-focus, and light metering.

It would be my first time to post in this thread as I have been backreading... anyways, an uncle of mine bought a Yashica FR II in 1977 or 78, used it for a while and then forgot that it existed. My mom kept it in a dark corner of our house and when I found it, it was pretty f#&ked up. It looks like a sandstorm went through in there and wreaked havoc. It also has molds and oxidation inside the body and in the lens, the film advance lever is stuck, the timer lever is loose, the hotshoe is broken, and i'm pretty sure there are other things messed up in there. Any of you guys ever had a camera this f#&ked up fixed in Hidalgo? I'm hoping it still can be fixed so i can use it again, thank you in advance for any info on having this Yashica fixed.

  17. maganda fables! tapos na ata, di ako sure. di nako updated eh, heheh. tipid tipid...a different twist on our favorite fairy tales

Fables is still on-going, there hasn't been an announcement if it will end soon. Don't know the current issue though, I just collect the TPBs.
