Started with various sub-genre's in metal (nu, alternative metal, mallcore lol -- IDGAF let's say eto ung gateway drug ko to my own personal heavy metal journey .. so i've never disregarded them) Pinoy Metal (Slapshock, Greyhoundz, Cheese, Wolfgang) -- Slipknot, Kittie, Korn, Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Coal Chamber, Rob Zombie, Disturbed, Fear Factory, Mudvayne, Sepultura, Pantera, and yes Linkin Park (lol)
Later, dug deep, discovering genres such as Power Metal (Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Kamelot, Persuader, Savage Circuys, Stratovarius, Nightwish, Nocturnal Rites, Unleash the Archers, 3 inches of blood, galneryus
Symphonic / Operatic / Folk - Therion, Leave's Eyes, Eluveitie, Epica, Within Temptation, Amberian Dawn, Lacuna Coil
New Wave of British Heavy Metal (iron maiden, judas priest, saxon, motorhead, ManOWar)
Thrash - syempre big 4 yan (anthrax, slayer, metallica, megadeth) , testament, exodus
Progressive Rock / Metal - Dream Theater, Rush, Circus Maximus, Queensryche, Devin Townsend, Polyphia, Gojira
Gothenburg / Melodic Death Metal bands - Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquility, Insomnium, Scar Symmetry, At the Gates, In Flames, Soilwork
Metalcore / Groove - As I Lay Dying, eariler trivium albums, lamb of god, Strapping Young Lad, Demon Hunter

So far, here the bands that i can think of on top of my head.
--- Caveat -- I may have interchanged some bands and their genre's pero most band crossover their style of music so you can't really encase / tailor fit them into a single genre only. And that is what makes modern metal more interesting.
