I tried both, from my experience doing it softly, slowly makes it harder and more hurtful. On my recent breakups I always tell my partner personally, straight to the point no sugar coating " I am in love with someone else and I will pursue her. I know you are hurting or angry, I am really sorry I gave up on us"

 

If I dont see that person with me in my future then I will be fair, admit that its me giving up then stop wasting their time. Cut if fast, cut it clean and dont go backsliding. Wish and pray her/him the best, that person was my partner and was a part of my life afterall. Wounds will heal eventually and hopefully someday if its ok with them, we can be genuine "Just friends".
