Back To The 70's

Yap, also Japanese cagers with a surname of "Taniguchi", "Abe" and the man-mountain "Numata". Red China did not compete sa Asian Games because of the country's close door policy but when they did opened it up, many were stunned by their height (nuon yun) and raw talent. I remember when they visited the Philippines during the 70's, parang ang babait nila. Imagine, kapag nabangga nila players natin, they halt play and tried to help yung players nating bumagsak (diplomacy then). But now its different na.

I also remember MICAA (Manila Industrial-Commercial Athletic Association), the most dominant sa local tournaments.

Yco - Freddie Webb, Botchok delos Santos, Canent, Reyes, Tolentino

Yutivo - Melencio

Mariwasa - Sullano, Robinson, Rojas

Meralco - Presley, Arnaiz, Jaworski, Reynoso, Marquez, Mariano

San Miguel - Miego, Castello, Cuevas, Paner, Regullano, (forgot the long tom artist nila nun)

Squibb - Pribhdas, Otazu

ay forgot YSMAEL pala rival ng YCO....

backl were the days when 6'3 CENTER NA (ely tolentino) at 6'1 BIG BOY REYNOSO...hehehe

ed ocampo put on the shackles k shindongPa

"habahaba"- abarrientos, dunno relation k johnny A.

who could forget alejandrito miego? bulilit...

jake rojas and jesse sullano tandem

tembong melencio - one of the orig dirty boys of RP basketball, uso non ang duraan sa mukha

danny florencio - at 5'9 thrives under the basket

Estoy Estrada yun long tom artist ng SMB

Yco - Florencio, Jun Papa, Joy Cleofas

......long tom artist ng SMB

"Long Tom"...definitely from the '70's. Wala ng gumagamit niyan ngayon. I remember Emy Arcilla in the early PBA broadcasts (bata pa p ako nun..grade 1 yata) using this term to describe long range shooters. Extra points to those who know the history of the term (without googling or searching the web). Clue: originally refered to a WW II weapon.

thomson submachinegun?

another icon during 60s70s = narciso bernardo

I also remember yung lupain ng Ysmael sa Quezon City na meron malaking robot. or sa quezon city nga ba yun? cant remember. Di pa ako mahilig sa basketball, but naririnig ko na yung rivalry through Channel 11 nuon (cant remember the sportcaster then, matanda na siya nuon).

Yes, centers we have during the 60s and 70s, a fraction over 6 feet lang, Paner, Samson, Tolentino, Supnet, etc.

hahaha, Miego, yes, at napaka gulang. bulilit but kung meron lang 3-point shot nuon, ang daming long tom artists nuon, Mariano, Marquez, Cuevas, Marcelo (good thing nabanggit mo siya, last time i saw him was during the crispa-toyota reunion), botchok delos santos, herrera (who earns his points through screens of melencio during the Motorola days), Belmonte (kapag nag jumpshot, tumitiklop ang paa), bank shot artist Lucindo, etc.

Kung duraan sa mukha while attempting a layup, no one beats johnny revilla of crispa hahaha.

the twisting undergoal stub of Danny florencio.

Wala na talagang pure shooters. Puro undergoal stabs ngayon. Di puwede sa international play yun. Remember when South Korea defeated China sa Asian Games? It was their consistent outside sniping that won the Sokor the championship.

Nuon talagang NATIONALISM. You are god!!! pero now, kapag national team na, ang unang tanong, MAGKANO TATANGGAPIN KO?

........ang the list goes on.............................

I remember Dick Ildefonso said decades ago that 'long tom" was a kind of malaking kanyon used during world war II. It has long (dont know the term) "arm" for precision target.

Uso kasi nuon puro set shot but with the advent of the jump shot mid 70s, nag adapt naman silang lahat including the set shot artist, the late Adriano "Jun" Papa. Note that Crispa then has the top 3 bes shooters in the land, and probably (with the exception of Shin and Taniguchi) the whole of Asia....Adornado, Papa and Florencio.

Estoy Estrada has the longest "hang time" nuon, and can change his type of shot and palipat lipat ng bola sa kamay (reminiscent of Michael Jordan when he was airborne during one of his layup attempt).

Amateur "daw" kasi sila.

San Miguel is the only company nuon that does not employ "imports". Puro all-filipino sila mas sa reinforce league. Meron ding Invitational tournament nuon pero team from MICAA still bags the championship.

Sarap ng usapan dito. Sayang nga nasunugan kami sa Dapitan, walang natira. Dami kong clippings ng 70s players nuon. Batang bata pa si Jawo and Freddie Webb. sayang na sayang.

Correct on that one. The Long Tom is the nickname for the US Army's 155mm M1 field gun that was used during WWII (including in the Philippine campaign). The gun could launch a 95 lbs. projectile over 15 miles with deadly accuracy and thus the nickname and the use of the nickname for deadly outside shooters in the '70's PBA.

Used to hear D. Ildefonso and J. Cantada refer to some basketball stars as "CLUTCH players". Can't seem to figure out how and why.

Some players are called "clutch players" because they tend to take over the situation during tense moments like when the opposing team is leading by 1 or a small margin. Those players have "nerves of steel" so they usually deliver the goods. Clutch players sa NBA are the likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Jerry West (the original mr. clutch who made a 60-foot heave in the last second that tied the count in a championship game. Here, I remember Mariano, Botchok delos Santos, Arthur Herrera, Estoy Estrada as the clutch players of the 70s. During the late 70s, its Francis Arnaiz.

By the way, uncle ni Abbarientos of Ginebra si Haba Haba Abbarientos of Crispa nuon.

Wasn't JAWORSKI and REYNOSO Banned for Life for game fixing? which..was eventually lifted? I remember overhearing my parents to talk about it.

Meron bang nakakaalam ni details nito? or may nakakaalala?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong pero I believe Jaworski and Big Boy Reynoso were initially banned for life for kicking/attacking a referee. I don't think it was for game fixing. The lifetime bans were later overturned in the mid-70s.

It was the 6 players from 1973 Crispa redmanizers who was banned for life but was eventually lifted. They are rudy kutch, jun papa, danny florencio, rudy soriano, johnny revilla, and ernie de leon.

jawo and Big Boy were banned for life for beating referees Cruz and Obias. Saw this game live! it all started when Meralco, ayon sa kanila, niluluto yung game. After Big Boy Reynoso was assessed with a charging foul on Jun Papa, all hell broke loose. Mainit na nuon then all of a sudden, Big Boy slammed the ball into the face of Cruz then Jawo joined the melee and kicked and punched Obias. Tayuan ang buong benches and it took minutes to calm things down. When all calmed down, may nagtapon ng kuting (kitten) sa court at dun napunta naman ang attention ng crowd. Mind you, wala pang hag wire sa bleachers during that time so maski anong hawak ng tao, binabato sa court. Players were usually escorted sa dugout with securities holding umbrellas. Those were the days.

I remember when a jolly green rookie by the name of Edgardo Carvajal from JRC came into MICAA, he blocked most of the national team players during the time. Carvajal is only 6'6" at parang si Feihl maglaro. Tawanan ang mga to sa loob ng coliseum. Batang bata pero nakakasabay sa mga mature amateurs.

Mas matititindi ang mga outside shooters nuon....Marquez, Herrera, Borchok, Reyes, Miego, Marcelo, Mariano, etc.

Yung ysmael steel robot ata, yung nasa Aurora blvd. Parati kong hinahanap yan nuon kapag pupunta kami sa QC. Ganda kasing tingnan. Ang laki laki.
