Fedor Emelianenko, M-1 welcome "superfight" with UFC's Brock Lesnar

by Dann Stupp on Nov 18, 2008 at 10:04 pm ET

In the wake up former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture's recent loss to Brock Lesnar, M-1 Global and WAMMA heavyweight title-holder Fedor Emelianenko have publicly stated their desire for a "superfight" between the famed Russian fighter and the UFC's new heavyweight champion.

M-1 today released the official statement of the proposed bout with Lesnar while Emelianenko granted interviews with select media members.

M-1 executive Jerry Millen and Emelianenko clarify that the fight would need to be a "co-promoted event between the UFC, M-1, and Affliction Entertainment" -- something that could be difficult given, what they argue, has been the UFC's "anti-Fedor policy."

Up until Couture's second-round TKO loss to Lesnar, Emelianenko and Couture had worked diligently toward their own fight. In fact, Couture cited his desire for the Emelianenko bout as one of the reasons he wanted to leave the UFC last year. The contract dispute lasted more than a year and culminated with Couture's loss to Lesnar this past weekend.

While Emelianenko is still open to fighting Couture, he and M-1 now also want to meet Lesnar. However, they don't feel it would be much of a contest.

"In a match between Fedor and Lesnar, we do not feel that at this stage Lesnar would be able to make it out of the first round," the statement read.

The full text of the statement can be found below. Additionally, stay tuned to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) for our interview with Emelianenko in which he discusses Couture, Lesnar and the Russian's upcoming "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" main event with Andrei Arlovski.

M-1's Official Statement on Brock Lesnar's victory

M-1 would like to congratulate Brock Lesnar on his UFC heavyweight title victory as well as acknowledge Randy Couture's return to active competition after a layoff that lasted over a year.

Couture and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko had publicly acknowledged a desire to fight each other multiple times over the course of the past year. While M-1 and Fedor remain interested in a match against Couture, we would also like to publicly state for the record that we would welcome a superfight between Fedor and Lesnar that would be held as a co-promoted event between the UFC, M-1, and Affliction Entertainment.

We've invited the media to speak with us today to not only make it clear we would welcome a Fedor vs. Lesnar matchup but to act in a preemptive fashion to address the possibility that UFC officials will try and position Lesnar as the No. 1 heavyweight in the world, much like they have tried to use a marketing ploy to brand Anderson Silfva as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

In the past, UFC president Dana White and Zuffa, LLC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta have tried to claim that Fedor was "overrated" and that his "record was irrelevant." They make these claims in spite of the fact that Fedor holds career victories over UFC champions past and present. While we have tremendous respect for the contributions Mr. Fertitta and Dana have made to this sport, we do not believe they are sincere in their statements.

It is the position of M-1 that the UFC has adopted an anti-Fedor policy because multiple attempts to sign him have not been fruitful. For a company that has tried to market itself as the number one promotion in the world, they are unable to accept the fact that the number one fighter in the world does not reside on its roster of contracted fighters.

We believe that the UFC has determined that it's much more inexpensive for them to use their marketing resources to use smoke and mirrors to brand a fighter as the pound-for-pound best as opposed to actually paying the pound-for-pound best what he is truly worth on the open market.

While Brock Lesnar is an accomplished athlete and a talented fighter, we do not consider him to be the number one heavyweight in the world. Until someone beats him, we strongly believe that Fedor should continue to be recognized as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. In a match between Fedor and Lesnar, we do not feel that at this stage Lesnar would be able to make it out of the first round.

For those who feel our statements in regards to Fedor are self-serving, we'd like to refer you to a video interview on the website RawVegas.tv in which at his UFC 91 after-party Couture himself acknowledges that "Fedor would probably tear Brock up at this point."

Brock Lesnar would get murdered by Fedor Emelianenko at this point in time IMO. I say get the Fedor/Randy Fight that everyone has always wanted first and then let Randy retire once and for all. Let Brock learn and let his MMA skills grow for a year or so first before engaging Fedor. Perhaps by the time Fedor's done with Randy Brock would be better suited to fighting him.

Fedor will destroy brock..

but if Fedor wants to fight brock, do it now.. mga 2 years baka halimaw na si lesnar

arrgghh.. i've been dying to see that fight: Fedor-Couture, sana matuloy na.

mali nga, thiago silva nga..i was watching a replay of the sokoudjo vs machida fight, kakabwiset tlga si machida hehehe i hope he gets his ass handed to him by thiago silva hehehehehe smile.gif

i want rampage, big nog & forrest to win smile.gif

machida, IMO is a thinking fighter. kumbaga sa giyera, he is an tactician/strategist. Unlike other fighters, let's say brock, in his fight against mir. he goes all out to destroy his opponent.

rampage, nog and forrest.. same here. go Noggie! :thumbsupsmiley:

he may be a tactician, but its irritating to watch machida fight, too much running & elusiveness, IMO kakairita talaga hehehe he should start engaging his opponent more often :)..

fedor vs randy or fedor vs brock would be awesome matches, any mma fan would salivate on the chance of watching these 3 fighters in any permutation fight :)..sana pumayag na si dana white & ufc, medyo madamot din kasi ufc, gusto nila sila lang makikinabang, dapat parang boxing din, golden boy promotions at si finkel eh nagjjoint promotion ng fights, dapat sa mma din :)

malamang ayaw mo din sa style ni Tim Sylvia ano? ^_^

i question the people who say that ayaw nila sa mga fighters who fight to win intead of fighting for fighting's sake.

in my opinion winning in a fight is supposed to be the goal after going into a fight

i mean you don't go into a fight thinking of ok lang kahit matalo ako, diba you always want to end with the longer end of the stick?

so i guess that is what Lyoto and Tim have in common, utak ang ginagamit plus their will to win ^_^

its too raw for fedor to fight lesnar at this point in time... given the fact that brock had won the ufc title it does'nt gain anything IMHO. it would only make fedor much less of a fighter since he wanted to fight big guys who does't have eough knowledge or experience (e.g hong man choi). brock is just starting to learn, why not fight randy instead since they wanted randy since 2007!..

If Im not mistaken WWE owns 20% share of the UFC. They offered UFC to some buyers months back but did not sell it. Maybe they were just testing if somebody's interested and for how much. Also now Lorenzo Fertita quit his post in the Station Casinos (which they owned) to work fulltime in the UFC's international expansion. And with $300million in revenues last year for payperviews, gates, merchandise and etc. The Fertitas and Dana White wont be selling anytimesoon. :hypocritesmiley:

I'm relieved to hear this! haaaaaaaaay

In hondacaptiva's world, anything is possible.

what do you mean in hondacptiva's world... is he a guy or some one else...

crocop's busy trying to become president of Croatia

Seryoso di nga ano na ba nangyari kay mirko, I looked up the ufc fighter list wala sya run saan nakaya si idol...

i still think its too early for lesnar to become the UFC HW Champ. i wanna see him fight gonzaga first...

I should be this way i guess...

1st fight lesnar vs. congo

2nd fight lesnar vs. gonzaga

3rd championship...

kaso it didn't happen that way Lesnar got away with the chickie herring... I'd be really happy if fedor will kick his ass and turn him into a pulp... But Randy should get the first shot against fedor first before the fedor vs. brock action!

Btw tried to do the hazelet rubber guard this past tuesday damn ang hirap!

and saw the opening of t.u.f. I'am abit unimpressed of nover... he kept kicking when he can use his hand for boxing... ano ba sya arm amputee... sorry I'm just abit unimpressed.

i don't know what you didn't like with Nover's match with Kaplan bro

i think it was wise that he finished the fight with a RNC instead of pounding Kapalan which may injure his fist...

anyways different strokes for different folks they say ^_^

i've got nothing useful to contribute to this thread :P except that my boys train @ Striking Unlimited

by Ken Hahn, Frank Mir, and other accomplished fighters

Frank Mir, as you guys are aware of, coaches the Mir Team of TUF, and Ken is assitant coach to Frank

outside of TUF, Ken actually trains Frank

no air about these guys...i didn't know who they were before i enrolled my kids there and still don't know

who's who in the TUF and UFC world...i only find out who they are from friends and my brothers.

The MIR team and some other previous TUF fighters train there (according to my brothers).

The guys are nothing like what I thought fighters would be, bulldoggish attitude.

Surprisingly, they're just all around nice guys.

my boys have learned so much within such a short time unlike their previous self-defense classes

they've been doing for years. and as a mom, i'm impressed at the self-confidence my boys now have since

training there. who knows, my boys might represent the next great Pinoy fighters of the UFC :P

the kids sparring is not to be taken lightly...these kids are fierce...out of all the sparring, the kids

sparring sessions generate alot of energy out of these seasoned fighters.

Striking Unlimited is a big gym in Vegas i believe so, and your kids are getting good training there if you ask me, i'd say it's comparable to Randy's Extreme Couture gym as well.

haha won't that be nice, being the mom of the next great Pinoy Fighter ^_^
