JackieM
Huhuhu Quote Link to comment

Comrade , the University of the Philippines is a state university and therefore is open to all those deserving and qualified regardless of socio-economic status. Sad to say the economically disadvantaged students wanting to enter UP may also be hampered by poor schooling , poor parental support , lack of proper diet and a host of other ills. This maybe the BIGGER PROBLEM which sad to say cannot be addressed by the University in setting up the passing standards. As I wrote in an earlier post UP tried to address this and the experiment failed. Re the cases that you mentioned no system is perfect. I hope you agree that cases like the ones you mention not only in UP but in other educational institutions as well. RE your nephew from Don Bosco and the scion of a Senator there will always be rumors like these but they are best rumors unless proven true. Posts like this throw undue shade on the institution . This is a public forum and it may do well to post responsibly. 1 Quote Link to comment

It all about job qualification , competence and experience. Siguro kailangan munang patunayan muna na may Pilipino na may equal qualification , competence and experience who was denied the job for your point to make sense. Quote Link to comment

I stand pale before all the experience and friends and acquaintances you mentioned. I will not even dare mention mine because after all that is not the point here is it ? Re UP issues again the University is not perfect and SOME of its faculty and administration not totally guiltless. Again as I have said it happens. The greater thing to consider perhaps is that the University on the overall maintains its integrity and academic standards. Quote Link to comment

Pero I see your point that being foreign doesn't always equate to being better. Goldwyn Monteverde's UP team beat the Tab Baldwin led Ateneo. As in sports though it is a team effort . Goldwyn Monteverde may have had a better team in that best of three series. Edited May 20, 2022 by FF Quote Link to comment
macbolan00
Funny thing, I know Miro Quimbo, his brother Rudy, and Mike Defensor. Chandra (with an 'r') Shahani was my classmate in one subject. I even used to hang out with Kiko Pangilinan in one tambayan (kung saan madaming maganda) but he won't remember me anymore, I guess. Thing is I see no relevance. Quote Link to comment

All the experiences and friends cited must have a bearing on the post otherwise its fluff and may just cloud and obscure the issue altogether. There will always be the lesser and greater of among us. And since we hide behind MTC handles there is pretty much no way to vet personal claims. So i usually rely on the quality of posts ( as we all do ) to paint the picture of the poster. My point to the poster is that in my 12 years in the UP system ( two in elementary / four in high school / six in college ) I had personal knowledge of just one case of faculty trangression. Add that to the fact that to this day many of my friends still remain within the system and we freely share amongst us their past as well as present experiences in the University. Still I agree that transgressions may have occurred. However proving it in a forum by citing proof and evidence is the crux of the matter. Edited May 20, 2022 by FF Quote Link to comment

Miro the lawyer who handled the "359 or 379" case of the controversial Pepsi promo and son of Romulo (to whom the house of Miro at Tierra Pura Subd was named to hide it from the public), his mother-in-law is the former secretary of DOST, Secretary Alabastro. Yes Mike and Miro are good friends and fact is Mike was the one who recommended Miro as CEO of Pag-IBIG during the time of GMA. Miro is also close to Manny Maliksi. Not Chandra but Chanda Narciso Ramos Shahani (this is how he introduced himself to me when I together with my friends helped managed the campaign of her mom in Cotabato & Maguindanao Province). macbolan00
Ako na magsasabi sayo. Before he was into campus politics, masayahing tao. Nothing special. Pakanta-kanta lang to woo the girls. He had a good singing voice, maybe one reason he managed to woo Sharon. But after a while, he became more aware and joined campus politics, became chairman of the student council. He was admitted into law school and did his time. Nothing really more to say about him. Oh, and Miro's WIFE is Dr Stella Alabastro, who also became congresswoman. Among the summa cum laudes from UP, she's my favorite. Quote Link to comment

Kun matalino, dapat meron alternate system that will sustain both livelihood and intellectual pursuit. In Germany, because they suffered from warfare, many are poor and displaced. The solution is to create a parallel system where people can shift between classroom or scholastic, and technical or factory/industry systems. If you are poor, the best way is to work in the technical system but allow public acknowledgement that will upgrade level of credentials even at work. Should a person attain financial independence or funding comfort, then he can shift to a scholastic system and attend classes formally. Quote Link to comment
macbolan00
Technical schools as an option to formal "liberal arts" education will work only if you have a local or regional economy that will accommodate you. As a kid in the '70s, the Philippines was a modestly industrialized country. We used to go on field trips to factories within the metro and OH, you had shoe factories, candy factories, factories for soap, textile and garment factories, various kinds of metal works, even electronics factories. Well, all of those have moved out of the metro or simply died out. Broadly, a fresh graduate's option now is either the local service-utilities field or seek employment abroad. For either option, a bachelor's degree is the best bet. Quote Link to comment
