Letang nets slick move in SO NYI@PIT: Letang beats Berube with fine move in SO

3/15/16: Kris Letang makes a beautiful move to his backhand and roofs it past Jean-Francois Berube in the shootout

PITTSBURGH -- In a game that had the intensity of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Pittsburgh Penguins took a step toward solidifying their playoff fate Tuesday.

Kris Letang scored the only goal in the shootout to help the Penguins defeat the New York Islanders 2-1 at Consol Energy Center.

Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who had 25 saves, earned his 30th win of the season by stopping Frans Nielsen, Kyle Okposo and John Tavares in the shootout. Islanders goalie Jean-Francois Berube stopped Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel but couldn't stop Letang on a backhanded shot in the second round.

"It's big [to get two points], especially against that team," Letang said. "I think we could've scored a lot more goals in that game. They pack it in pretty well in front of their net. … But I think for the most part of that game, we controlled the game."

Capitals win in OT, clinch playoff berth

Washington defeats Carolina, becomes first team to reach postseason

Ovechkin's game-winning goal CAR@WSH: Ovechkin fires it home to win the game in OT

3/15/16: Evgeny Kuznetsov finds Alex Ovechkin, who rifles the puck home to give the Capitals a 2-1 overtime win, clinching a playoff berth

WASHINGTON -- Alex Ovechkin scored 1:38 into overtime and the Washington Capitals became the first team in the NHL to clinch a berth in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs with a 2-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Verizon Center on Tuesday.

It's the fastest the Capitals have clinched a playoff spot since 2009-10. Washington has qualified for the postseason in eight of the past nine seasons.

"We know where we're at, and we knew the stats," right wing Justin Williams said. "(It's) something we're very proud of, our record so far. We've earned everything we've had so far."

They may be the first team in the NHL to secure a spot in the postseason, but the Capitals feel they still have more to prove.

"It's certainly unexpected with this many games left," Williams said. "It's a tribute to how we've played and we're proud of where we sit, but not proud enough to rest on our laurels. We're pushing forward and you'll see how good we can be."

The Capitals have 12 games remaining and lead the NHL with 105 points. Williams said there's still more work to be done.

Flyers move closer to playoff spot

Philadelphia defeats Detroit to pull within point of wild card

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia Flyers forward Michael Raffl admitted there were things off the ice that may have been affecting his play recently, but it certainly didn't look like anything was bothering him Tuesday.

Raffl scored two goals to help the Flyers to a 4-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Wells Fargo Center, moving Philadelphia (33-23-12) within one point of the Red Wings (34-25-11) for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference. The Flyers are 7-1-1 in their past nine games.

It was Raffl's second two-goal NHL game; his previous one came Oct. 25, 2014, also against the Red Wings. He has 12 goals this season; that's off the pace he set last season when he scored 21, but he has four in his past seven games.

That coincides with Feb. 28, when he signed a three-year contract. Prior to that, he had two goals in 21 games. Knowing what his future holds has raised his spirits, and his play.

Smith nets rebound for the lead TBL@TOR: Smith jams home rebound goal on Vasilevskiy

3/15/16: Ben Smith guides the rebound through the pads of Andrei Vasilevskiy to give the Maple Leafs a 2-1 lead in the 3rd period

TORONTO -- Ben Smith said it may have been his worst game with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he'll take it.

Smith's first goal of the season midway through the third period was the game-winner when the Maple Leafs defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday. Smith also had an assist.

Zach Hyman and PA Parenteau scored empty-net goals for the Maple Leafs, who have won three of their past four games.

"This is my ninth game with Toronto and to finally put one in the net felt good," Smith said. "It was probably one of my worst couple of games here as a Leaf. Overall, there were a lot of things I could have done better, but offensively it was my best game."

MONTREAL -- A visit to the dentist was a bigger priority than postgame interviews for Florida Panthers center Vincent Trocheck, who let his hot stick do his talking Tuesday.

Trocheck had a goal and an assist, and Jiri Hudler, Nick Bjugstad and Aleksander Barkov scored to power Florida to a 4-1 victory against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre.

Trocheck has two goals and eight points in his past four games, including a career-high four points in a 6-2 win against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

"He's playing very well lately," right wing Jaromir Jagr said. "He's skating and he's got a lot of confidence, and he's shooting the puck with a lot of confidence. He's a very underrated player. I'm glad he's underrated. People don't pay attention to him too much, but on the team we know how good he is."

Trocheck, who was named the NHL Second Star of the Week on Monday, scored his 21st goal in the first period.

SAN JOSE -- The San Jose Sharks appear to have recaptured their home-ice advantage, just in time for the NHL's stretch run.

Joonas Donskoi scored the go-ahead power-play goal at 6:37 of the third period, and the Sharks held on for a 3-2 victory against the Boston Bruins at SAP Center on Tuesday. San Jose defeated Boston three days after earning a 5-2 victory against the League-leading Washington Capitals.

"These are good tests for us," Sharks center Joe Thornton said. "Saturday night, they're one of the best in the East, and these guys are one of the best in the East. It's a good measuring stick for us, and we like the way we're playing. We like our home game again too. Everything's starting to come together nicely."

The Sharks are 9-3-3 in their past 15 games at SAP Center after starting the season 5-12-0 at home.

Donskoi scored on San Jose's third of four power plays. With Boston's Jimmy Hayes in the penalty box for a hit to the head of San Jose's Justin Braun, Sharks defenseman Brent Burns zipped a cross-ice pass to Joel Ward, who sent the puck from the left circle toward the net. Donskoi redirected it past Tuukka Rask for his 11th goal of the season.

"I just went to the net and put my stick on the ice," Donskoi said.

Byron's game-winning goal MTL@BUF: Byron banks puck off skate for game-winner

3/16/16: Paul Byron scores the game-winning goal in overtime on a shot that deflects off a defenseman's skate and into the net

BUFFALO -- The Montreal Canadiens found out Wednesday that throwing the puck on net, even indirectly, can pay dividends.

Paul Byron scored with 1:45 left in overtime to give the Canadiens a 3-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center.

Byron broke in 2-on-1 with Torrey Mitchell against Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian. Byron's pass to Mitchell went off Bogosian's stick and past goalie Robin Lehner.

"Just started on a controlled breakout and a great pass by [Nathan Beaulieu] to get it right on my tape in full speed, and 2-on-1 I saw Torrey [Mitchell's] stick and I was just trying to get it over to him and deflected right off the [defenseman's] stick," Byron said.

Flyers in playoff position after defeating Blackhawks

Philadelphia 8-1-1 in past 10 games; Chicago loses fourth straight

CHICAGO -- Simplicity is working for the Philadelphia Flyers, who moved into a Stanley Cup Playoff position with a 3-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center on Wednesday.

The Flyers (34-23-12, 80 points) fought back from two one-goal deficits to score the game's final two goals using defense, goaltending and skill in a win that moved them past the Red Wings (34-25-11, 79 points) for the second wild card from the Eastern Conference.

Philadelphia defeated Detroit 4-3 at home on Tuesday.

"We're just trying to keep it simple, not trying to play out of structure or anything like that," said forward Wayne Simmonds, who assisted on the game-tying goal by Brayden Schenn at 13:02 of the second period. "Simple is better for us. Every time we play simple, we manage pucks and don't try to get too fancy, the majority of the time, we end up on the better side of the scoreboard."

EDMONTON -- The Edmonton Oilers ended an extended slump with the man-advantage, scoring four power-play goals in a 6-4 win against the St. Louis Blues at Rexall Place on Wednesday.

Edmonton (28-38-7) was 1-for-32 on the power play in its past 14 games but went 4-for-6 against St. Louis (41-22-9), which had the second-best penalty-killing unit in the NHL (85.7 percent).

The Oilers, who had lost eight straight against the Blues, had a fifth power-play goal waved off in the second period.

"We were getting drilled and quizzed about the power play and we get hot all of a sudden and it goes in the net," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "I thought the power play, it had an all-time high as far as urgency went and it outworked the penalty k*ll. We weren't cute, we weren't fancy. We shot, we got the puck back, we scored on rebounds."

CALGARY -- Michael Frolik had a goal and two assists to help the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday.

Joe Colborne, Sean Monahan and Mark Giordano scored, and Joni Ortio made 28 saves for Calgary (30-35-5), which has won three of its past four games.

"We said in the room here that we want to finish strong," Frolik said. "Every game, we want to play hard, we want to be on the puck. Every shift, we want to play very hard. I think we were doing that the last couple of games and just want to carry on that in the rest of the season."

Drew Stafford scored for Winnipeg (29-36-5). Ondrej Pavelec made 17 saves.

"The few mistakes we made ended up in our net and it's a challenge mentally to stay with what you believe in and to stay with what you do," Jets forward Blake Wheeler said. "But we believe that doing that is going to pay off in the not-too-distant future, hopefully."

ANAHEIM -- Defenseman Kevin Klein had the first two-goal game of his NHL career and Antti Raanta made 22 saves to help the New York Rangers to a 2-1 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Honda Center on Wednesday.

Klein tied the game 1-1 at 3:11 of the second period, then put the Rangers ahead with 6:41 left in the third when he went to the net and deflected Eric Staal's pass behind Ducks goaltender John Gibson for his eighth goal of the season. He has four points in his past five games.

The Rangers (40-23-7) won the opener of their three-game California trip, which continues Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings. They regained second place in the Metropolitan Division, moving two points ahead of the New York Islanders, who have two games in hand.

Michael Stone had a goal and an assist, and Mike Smith made 27 saves for the Coyotes, who defeated the Sharks for the first time in three games this season.

Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose (39-25-6), which had two goals disallowed after video review and missed a chance to jump past the Anaheim Ducks into second place in the Pacific Division. Jones made 19 saves.

Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic left the game with 7:33 remaining after a collision with Doan. Forward Matt Nieto was injured in the second period.

San Jose appeared to take a 1-0 lead when Dainius Zubrus beat Smith from the slot at 12:23 of the first period following a Kevin Connauton turnover. But Arizona coach Dave Tippett challenged the call on the ice, and the goal was waved off after video review determined Zubrus was offsides.

The Coyotes took a 1-0 lead a minute later. Alex Tanguay settled a loose puck and set up Stone for a shot from the point that was deflected out high by Sharks forward Nieto and past Jones.

San Jose coach Peter DeBoer challenged the ruling on the ice, but Stone's fifth goal was upheld after video review determined Tanguay was onside.

Stone has four of his five goals and 23 of his 32 points on home ice.

The Sharks had 11 shots in the second period and appeared to tie it 1-1 at 6:29 of the second period when Chris Tierney chased a Paul Martin shot into the crease and had the puck deflect off his leg and past Smith. Video review determined that Tierney used a distinct kicking motion, and a second San Jose goal came off the scoreboard, leaving Arizona with its 1-0 lead.

The Sharks did draw even at 14:29 of the second. Joe Thornton set up Martin for a shot from the point. The shot never got to the net, but Hertl kicked the puck to his stick and beat Smith's outstretched pad for his 17th goal.

Smith, who made 44 saves in a 4-0 win against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday in his first game after missing 40 following abdominal surgery, had his shutout streak end at 106:03.

Reinhart's PPG opens the scoring BUF@OTT: Reinhart puts the Sabres ahead early

3/18/16: Sam Reinhart's initial rebound try is saved, but he flips another attempt off the glove of Craig Anderson and in for a power-play goal

BUFFALO -- Sam Reinhart showed there is another Buffalo Sabres rookie worth watching this season.

Reinhart scored his 20th goal and had an assist to help the Buffalo Sabres defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-1 at First Niagara Center on Friday.

Reinhart gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead 2:07 into the first period with a power-play goal. After Senators defenseman Dion Phaneuf was called for slashing, Reinhart put a rebound of a Zemgus Girgensons shot past Senators goalie Craig Anderson.

"I think we came out and really wanted to turn around our starts," Reinhart said. "As of lately, they haven't been the best and we've been better as the game's gone on. To get that first one early and that next one right after, that got us going on the right page and we followed that up. It was a good effort tonight."

Winnik finishes Kuznetsov's feed NSH@WSH: Winnik scores off dish from Kuznetsov

3/18/16: Braden Holtby makes a long pass to Evgeny Kuznetsov, who sets up Daniel Winnik for the game-tying goal midway through the 2nd period

WASHINGTON -- When Evgeny Kuznetsov goes behind the net, his linemates know they have to be ready.

"I don't think you get used to it," said T.J. Oshie, who converted a passout from Kuznetsov into what proved to be the game-winning goal in the Washington Capitals' 4-1 victory against the Nashville Predators at Verizon Center on Friday. "You try to get ready for it. But even when it does come, you kind of think to yourself, 'How'd he just do that?' I'll take them every time."

Kuznetsov finished with three assists and has 53 for the season, tied for second in the NHL. He leads the Capitals and is tied for third in the NHL with 73 points, and his creativity with the puck seems to be endless.

"He sees things that maybe only a handful of players in the League can see," Oshie said. "It's fun. It's nice getting those empty-netters."

3/18/16: Andrew Ladd scores his first goal against his former team as he taps home Jonathan Toews' feed, putting the Blackhawks up by three

WINNIPEG -- Andrew Ladd scored in his return to MTS Centre, helping the Chicago Blackhawks defeat the Winnipeg Jets 4-0 on Friday.

Scott Darling made 28 saves for his second NHL shutout, which ended a four-game losing streak for Chicago (42-24-6).

The Blackhawks, who won for the first time since March 6, are one point behind the second-place St. Louis Blues in the Central Division.

Ladd made it 3-0 in his Winnipeg homecoming after a trade to Chicago on Feb. 25. Ladd, who played 429 games with the Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise and became their captain in 2010-11, took a pass to the slot from Jonathan Toews and shot it past goalie Ondrej Pavelec 3:06 into the third period.
