Penguins use big second period to defeat Rangers

Pittsburgh scores three times in 1:39 against New York

Penguins score two in 21 seconds NYR@PIT: Crosby, Malkin net goals 21 seconds apart

3/3/16: Sidney Crosby gets the Penguins on the board in the 2nd, then Evgeni Malkin scores 21 seconds later to give the Penguins the lead

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins used a late surge in a contentious second period to defeat the New York Rangers 4-1 at Consol Energy Center on Thursday.

Following a slow first period, the crowd ignited 6:17 into the second period when Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist dropped his stick and shoved the net off its moorings. Lundqvist was visibly upset after a collision with Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh and was called for delay of game, giving Pittsburgh a power play that Penguins forward Phil Kessel cut short with a slashing call 1:09 later.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said he doesn't believe Lundqvist's injury to be serious. Lundqvist experienced neck spasms stemming from the McDonagh collision, which caused New York to pull him following the second. Vigneault said he thinks Lundqvist shoved the net in an attempt to get the referee's attention to inform him of his injury.

"I don't know if the signals didn't cross or whatever, but obviously the referee didn't pick up on it," Vigneault said. "And he wasn't feeling right at that time, so he decided to stay in but couldn't finish the game. … I didn't know [Lundqvist was hurt]. Nobody knew. I don't think [Lundqvist] made it very clear to the referee either, at that time. So, we knew that when we came in from the second that he was having issues with his neck there, but at that time, we didn't."

Chris Kreider snuck a wrist shot between goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's blocker and the right post to give New York (37-21-6) a 1-0 lead with 3:10 remaining in the second.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Anaheim Ducks tied a franchise record with their 10th straight victory, 5-1 against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Thursday.

Corey Perry assisted on goals by Jamie McGinn and Rickard Rakell on Anaheim's first two shots, 46 seconds apart in the first period. He scored his 28th goal and fifth in the past three games to cap a three-goal second period for the Ducks.

3/3/16: Brent Burns picks up the puck and wrists one past Ryan Miller to score a game-tying goal early in the 3rd period

VANCOUVER -- Trailing by a goal heading into the third period Thursday, the San Jose Sharks didn't have to look back too far to know they could come back against the Vancouver Canucks.

Defensemen Brent Burns tied it 43 seconds into the third period, and Patrick Marleau scored the go-ahead goal less than five minutes later to help San Jose to a 3-2 victory at Rogers Arena. It was the Sharks' second win against the Canucks in Vancouver in five days, each coming after trailing by a goal entering the third period.

"We have done it a few times now, so we know we can do it," Marleau said. "You don't want to be toying with it that many times. We play a certain way we know we are going to get our chances. It's just a matter of burying those chances and sticking with it."

Kopitar's goal opens scoring MTL@LAK: Kopitar opens scoring on deflection

3/3/16: Alec Martinez fires a shot which is deflected by Anze Kopitar that enters the back of the net, putting the Kings up 1-0 in the 1st

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Kings were working for the weekend.

Anze Kopitar , Tanner Pearson and Dwight King scored and the surging Kings defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 at Staples Center on Thursday.

The Kings (38-21-4) won for the fifth time in six games to retain first place in the Pacific Division. Los Angeles and the Anaheim Ducks have 80 points entering their game Saturday at Staples Center; the Kings are first because they have three more regulation/overtime victories.

"It's going to be the biggest game of the year," King said. "Everybody knows that going in, obviously. Everybody knows what's on the line. Everybody's aware of that. So it's going to be, pretty much, playoff hockey."

It was the seventh one-goal game in the past 10 for Los Angeles, which scored more than two goals for the first time in six games.

"It's a step in the right direction," King said. "Obviously the win is the only thing that matters. As long as we've got everyone building more confidence [with] 20 more games left or so heading into the playoffs."

Power play carries Canucks past Sharks

Vancouver had lost twice to San Jose earlier this week

SAN JOSE -- The Vancouver Canucks had lost two games in six days to the San Jose Sharks, wasting third-period leads each time, before facing them Saturday at SAP Center.

The Canucks again failed to hold a third-period lead against San Jose, but this time, they recovered for a 4-2 victory.

Linden Vey, Daniel Sedin and Dan Hamhuis scored power-play goals, with Hamhuis breaking a 2-2 tie midway through the third period. and backup goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves for his 10th win of the season. Forward Alexandre Burrows, playing in his 750th NHL game, scored an empty-net goal with 2:06 left, helping the Canucks (25-27-12) end a three-game losing streak.

The Canucks went 3-for-7 on the power play; the Sharks were 0-for-3.

"I thought we hated these guys a little bit more tonight, disliked them, wanted to bring the battle to them," Burrows said. "Battling hard, I thought. That's how you've got to win against these guys. If you give them too much respect, too much time and space, they're so good they're going to make you pay. I thought special teams were good. Our PP was really dynamite tonight. The PK did a good job."

Tanguay nets his second goal FLA@ARI: Tanguay deflects home his second goal

3/5/16: Alex Tanguay deflects Antoine Vermette's pass past Al Montoya for his second goal of the game, giving the Coyotes a 4-1 lead in the 3rd

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Alex Tanguay was itching to play his first game with the Arizona Coyotes, particularly linemates and fellow Quebec natives Antoine Vermette and Anthony Duclair, but a sore knee pushed his debut back 48 hours.

He more than made up for the delay.

Tanguay had two goals and an assist, and his new line combined for nine points to help the Coyotes end a seven-game losing streak with a 5-1 win against the Florida Panthers at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

Vermette tied career highs with three assists and four points, Duclair had two assists, and the Coyotes, who played without suspended forward Max Domi, controlled the final 40 minutes thanks to their new French connection.

"I hope it keeps going. It was fun," Tanguay said. "Anthony's got a lot of speed, a lot of skills, and he's going to create a lot of open ice. … And Antoine is a very smart player. He plays well in both zones, he wins a lot of faceoffs, he's extremely smart with the puck, and tonight he made a lot of great plays."

TAMPA -- Alex Killorn scored with 42.5 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Tampa Bay Lightning their franchise-record ninth consecutive victory, 4-3 against the Carolina Hurricanes at Amalie Arena on Saturday.

Killorn raced down right wing, beat Hurricanes forward Joakim Nordstrom to the net and swept across the crease before lifting a shot over goalie Eddie Lack for his 13th goal of the season.

"I was trying to figure out how to make a play … just ended up skating up the ice," Killorn said. "They called me off [the ice], but I knew one of the guys who was a forward was playing defense so I just had to step on him and took it wide of the goalie."

Ondrej Palat scored twice and Tyler Johnson had the tying goal with 6:18 remaining in the third period for the Lightning (39-22-4), who are 7-1 in 3-on-3 overtime. Ben Bishop made 24 saves for Tampa Bay, which plays at the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday.

Niskanen's overtime winner WSH@BOS: Niskanen rips one past Rask to win it in OT

3/5/16: Matt Niskanen buries a slap shot from the high slot past Tuukka Rask in overtime to give the Capitals a 2-1 victory in Boston

BOSTON -- Matt Niskanen scored 2:36 into overtime, Philipp Grubauer made 33 saves, and the Washington Capitals started a four-game road trip with a 2-1 win against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Saturday.

Niskanen beat Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask with a slap shot from the high slot after a pass from Andre Burakovsky.

"I just got on the ice, and a lot of times that we do 3-on-3 like that, we start interchanging and crisscrossing, trying to free up some space, and that's kind of what happened," Niskanen said. "[burakovsky] did a good job getting the interception there. I had just enough room to get a slapper off from up top, and I don't know if it went off their defender's stick or not but somehow it found its way in."

Washington (48-13-4) became the first team in the NHL to reach 100 points this season. The Capitals, who have 17 games remaining, are the only team that hasn't lost consecutive games in regulation; they lost 3-2 to the New York Rangers at Verizon Center on Friday.

Scheifele completes hat trick MTL@WPG: Scheifele scores empty netter for third goal

3/5/16: Mark Scheifele races down the ice and smacks in a goal on an empty net to collect his first career hat trick

WINNIPEG -- Mark Scheifele had his first NHL hat trick to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 at MTS Centre on Saturday.

After Montreal tied Winnipeg twice, Scheifele drifted in front of the Canadiens net and deflected Drew Stafford's long pass to the slot past goaltender Mike Condon with 6:59 left in the third period. Scheifele finished the hat trick with 29 seconds remaining, outracing Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban for an empty-net goal.

"I tripped up on [an earlier empty-net] opportunity, so I was pretty determined to get that one," Scheifele said. "To play against a good team like them on 'Hockey Night in Canada,' it makes it that much better. It was a hard-fought game. It got frustrating at times."

Scheifele, who has taken over as Winnipeg's No. 1 center after Bryan Little (vertebrae) was injured Feb. 18, has a Jets-high 20 goals, five in his past two games.

"It's huge for me," Scheifele said. "With [Little] going down, I wanted to be that guy that stepped up and give a little more. I just want to continue that."

3/5/16: Rickard Rakell's wrister deflects off Jakob Silfverberg's shoulder and into the back of the net to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead in the 3rd

LOS ANGELES - The Anaheim Ducks have climbed the mountain, but say they're not done yet.

That was the common theme in the Ducks' dressing room after Jakob Silfverberg scored in the third period and Anaheim won a franchise-record 11th straight game with a 3-2 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Saturday.

David Perron and Ryan Kesler also scored for the Ducks (37-19-8), who took sole possession of first place in the Pacific Division after they were 16 points behind the Kings on Jan. 12.

"That's the position we want to be in and we're not satisfied being there right now," Rickard Rakell said. "We just want to keep going. ... the team's coming together and we have four lines that play solid hockey. It must be tough to match up against us."

Anaheim is 18-1-1 since Jan. 17 and has the best record in the League (25-4-2) and best road record (12-1-2) since the Christmas break.
