Ovechkin's go-ahead goal ARI@WSH: Ovechkin scores to give Capitals the lead

2/22/16: Alex Ovechkin rifles in a wrist shot from the left circle in the 3rd period, giving the Captials a 2-1 lead

WASHINGTON -- Mike Richards was beginning to think he'd never score a goal again. When he finally did, he couldn't believe it really happened.

Richards' first goal of the season proved to be the game-winner in the Washington Capitals' 3-2 victory against the Arizona Coyotes at Verizon Center on Monday. It was his first goal in 13 months.

"I just figured with my luck, it'd be disallowed," Richards said. "I actually thought the goalie had it and the puck just popped out and it somehow ended up on my stick.

"Over the last couple of games I just started seeing the ice a little bit more, a little bit better, [had] more composure with the puck and when you have composure with the puck, you have more energy in the game if you're not chasing it. I've also thought that I might not score ever again."

Thornton's 3rd-period goal SJS@STL: Thornton beats Allen with a backhanded shot

2/22/16: Joe Thornton steals the puck in the Blues' zone and beats Jake Allen from the slot with the backhand shot to increase the Sharks' lead

ST. LOUIS -- Joe Thornton had a four-point game (two goals, two assists) and Logan Couture had two goals and an assist for the San Jose Sharks, who tied the NHL lead for most road wins with a 6-3 victory against the St. Louis Blues at Scottrade Center on Monday.

The Sharks (32-21-5) won their 21st road game, which tied the Washington Capitals for most in the League.

Tomas Hertl scored twice, Marc-Edouard Vlasic had two assists and Martin Jones made 25 saves for San Jose, which is 14-3-3 in its past 20 games and has scored four or more goals in four of the past six. The Sharks are 21-9-2 away from SAP Center.

The Sharks capitalized on the top penalty k*ll unit in the NHL by scoring twice, and Thornton benefited from another four-point game in St. Louis; his most-recent four-point game prior to Monday was at Scottrade Center, where he had a goal and three assists on Oct. 15, 2013.

Thornton has 39 points since Dec. 15, most in the NHL. He has 53 points in 46 games against the Blues.

WINNIPEG -- Jamie Benn scored twice in the final six minutes to help the Dallas Stars to a 5-3 win against the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre on Tuesday.

Colton Sceviour scored his sixth goal with 7:31 left in the third period to give Dallas a 3-2 lead. It was not initially ruled a goal, but play was stopped after video review determined the puck went in the Winnipeg net.

Benn scored on the power play 1:39 later to make it a two-goal lead. Mark Scheifele's 14th goal with 2:06 to go moved the Jets back to within a goal, but Dallas held off Winnipeg from there, and Benn scored into an empty net with 14.7 seconds left.

The game started a home-and-home set that continues Thursday in Dallas.

The Stars (38-17-6) ended a three-game losing streak (0-2-1) and moved past the idle Chicago Blackhawks into first place in the Central Division. The Jets (25-30-4), who are last in the Central, have lost four in a row and five of their past six.

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Frans Nielsen scored two goals and John Tavares had a goal and an assist to help the New York Islanders to a 4-1 win against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center on Tuesday.

Goaltender Jaroslav Halak made 30 saves for the Islanders (32-19-7), who have won the first two games of their seven-game road trip and are 6-1-1 in their past eight. They are three points back of the New York Rangers for second place in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders have two games in hand.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Wild and was their first loss since John Torchetti took over as interim coach on Feb. 13. Minnesota (27-23-10), which defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 6-1 at TCF Bank Stadium on Sunday as part of the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, has lost nine in a row at Xcel Energy Center; the Wild haven't won there since a 3-1 victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Dec. 28.

Matt Martin scored for New York, which began a stretch of five consecutive road games against Western Conference opponents. Islanders forward Anders Lee, a Minnesota native, had two assists.

Athanasiou hits winner in SO CBJ@DET: Athanasiou gives Red Wings the win during SO

2/23/16: Andreas Athanasiou makes a pretty move, then rifles in a wrister past Curtis McElhinney to give the Red Wings a 2-1 win in a shootout

DETROIT -- Riley Sheahan and Andreas Athanasiou scored in the shootout to give the Detroit Red Wings a 2-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday.

Sheahan scored and Petr Mrazek made 28 saves for Detroit (30-20-11), which ended a four-game losing streak (0-2-2). Mrazek denied Cam Atkinson and Alexander Wennberg in the shootout.

"It's a big two points," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "Coming off of four games where we weren't able to get a win -- obviously we had points in the last two -- but at home here, we needed the two points. We're at that point of the season, you've got to find a way, and we found a way."

It was the first time Blashill used Sheahan or Athanasiou in a shootout this season. Sheahan scored once on three previous attempts; Athanasiou is a rookie.

"Sheahan hasn't taken many shootouts, but his numbers are pretty good," Blashill said. "We've obviously gone with the guys who have the best numbers historically and recently and in recent years, but it hasn't worked. It was a bit of a hunch.

"Sheahan had scored on the breakaway earlier. Athanasiou, I know, is a real, good shootout guy, having had him in (AHL) Grand Rapids."

Forsberg scores, nets hat trick NSH@TOR: Forsberg notches hat trick in the 2nd period

2/23/16: Filip Forsberg fires a wrister from the slot to score his third goal of the game, notching a hat trick and extending the lead

TORONTO -- Filip Forsberg had a natural hat trick and the Nashville Predators held off the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday.

Forsberg, who scored two goals in Nashville's first four games this season and then went 17 straight games without scoring, took over the team lead in goals with 23, passing James Neal (21). It was his first regular-season NHL hat trick; he had one during Nashville's Western Conference First Round series against the Chicago Blackhawks last spring.

"It was great," Forsberg said. "It obviously put our team in a great spot at 3-0 and it was all we needed for tonight."

Forsberg, 21, has nine goals in his past nine games. He said his struggles at the start of the season are a distant memory.

"I thought I played pretty good at the start, but the puck didn't go in for me," Forsberg said. "I didn't think about it too much. The Nashville media was kind and didn't remind me about it too much. Obviously I like this streak better."

Ward's great glove save PHI@CAR: Ward flashes the glove to deny Laughton

2/23/16: Cam Ward makes a terrific glove save on a two-on-one break to prevent Scott Laughton from scoring his second goal of the game

RALEIGH, N.C. -- With the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline next Monday at 3 p.m. ET, rumors suggest Eric Staal's tenure with the Carolina Hurricanes could be nearing an end.

So after Eric and younger brother Jordan Staal each scored in a 3-1 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at PNC Arena on Tuesday, the elder Staal sounded a bit nostalgic.

"You dream of playing in the NHL and you dream of playing on the same team and scoring goals to help the team win," Eric Staal said. "It doesn't get much better, to be honest."

The brothers have been trending in different directions during Carolina's push toward the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Eric's goal ended a 16-game drought, and Jordan has 23 points in the past 21 games.

"He's playing phenomenal hockey, the best I've seen his whole career," Eric said of his brother. "It's been really fun to watch him turn into the player I know he is. He's huge for this group and he's going to continue to be huge for this group down the stretch. It's been fun for me to see his game grow."

Cam Ward made 36 saves and is 7-1-4 in his past 12 starts for the Hurricanes (28-23-10).

2/23/16: Sergey Kalinin skates in all alone and beats Henrik Lundqvist with a sweet top-shelf shot to increase the Devils' lead to two goals

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils left wing Sergey Kalinin first learned of a Gordie Howe Hat Trick on the Internet growing up in Omsk, Russia.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound forward never envisioned he'd get one 57 games into his NHL career, but it happened Tuesday when he had a goal, an assist and a fight in a 5-2 win against the New York Rangers at Prudential Center.

"He's our Russian Gordie Howe," Devils goaltender Corey Schneider said.

Tyler Kennedy, Kyle Palmieri, Lee Stempniak and Adam Larsson scored, and Schneider made 17 saves for the Devils (30-24-7), who ended a three-game losing streak.

Kalinin assisted on Kennedy's goal in the first, fought Rangers left wing J.T. Miller in the second, and scored on a breakaway against Henrik Lundqvist with 2:44 remaining in the third.

Kopitar's power-play goal CGY@LAK: Kopitar slams it home on PP to regain lead

2/23/16: Anze Kopitar finds the puck and slams it into the back of the net, giving the Kings a 2-1 lead in the 2nd with a power-play goal

LOS ANGELES -- Anze Kopitar scored the go-ahead goal via the power play in the second period in his first game back from a lower-body injury to help the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-1 win against the Calgary Flames at Staples Center on Tuesday.

Kopitar converted a pass through heavy traffic from Drew Doughty into an open net at 17:27. Defenseman Luke Schenn scored and Jonathan Quick made 22 saves for his fifth 30-win season for Los Angeles (35-20-4), which won in its first home game after a 3-3-1 trip.

Joni Ortio made a season-high 35 saves for the Flames (26-30-3), who were swept in their Southern California trip and have lost five of six games.

Sean Monahan tied it 1-1 with a tap-in of a smooth passing sequence by Jiri Hudler and Johnny Gaudreau from behind the net on the power play at 11:56 of the second.

The Kings finally broke through against Ortio at 9:41 of the second, with their 21st shot. Schenn sent the puck on net from the boards and it went in far side with teammate Vincent Lecavalier providing a screen.

Ortio was tested early with 13 first-period saves in his first NHL start since Oct.30, and the Kings outshot the Flames 20-6 to start the game. He spent almost three months in the American Hockey League and was recalled when Karri Ramo was injured.

Calgary scratched Matt Stajan instead of Micheal Ferland because coach Bob Hartley reportedly changed his mind after the morning skate.

BOSTON -- Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask made a season-high 41 saves and forward David Pastrnak scored two goals in a 5-1 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins at TD Garden on Wednesday.

Jimmy Hayes and Landon Ferraro had goals for Boston (33-22-6), which was outshot 42-29 but won for the second time in its past six home games (2-3-1) and moved into third place in the Atlantic Division.

Tom Kuhnhackl scored and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves for Pittsburgh (30-21-18).

The Penguins outshot the Bruins 13-10 in the first period, but Pastrnak's penalty shot at 16:00 was the only goal. Pastrnak got behind Pittsburgh defenseman Derrick Pouliot in a race for David Krejci's pass. Pouliot hauled down Pastrnak, but the latter beat Fleury with a wrist shot low to the glove side on the penalty shot.

It was the Bruins' third goal in three penalty shot attempts this season (Brad Marchand has the other two).
