Backlund's go-ahead goal CGY@PIT: Backlund scores off feed from Hamilton

3/5/16: Dougie Hamilton moves deep into the Penguins' zone and gets a pass to Mikael Backlund, who deflects it into the net in the 2nd period

PITTSBURGH - The Calgary Flames fought back from two one-goal deficits to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 at Consol Energy Center on Saturday.

After failing to score on a double-minor power play in the second period, the Flames took a lead four seconds after it expired. Forward Mikael Backlund redirected a shot from defenseman Dougie Hamilton past goalie Marc-Andre Fleury's blocker to put Calgary up 3-2 with 4:14 remaining in the period.

The Flames went on the lengthy power play after Penguins forward Tom Kuhnhackl was called for high-sticking defenseman Jakub Nakladal with 8:18 left in the second. Nakladal remained on the ice for several minutes covering his face before being helped to the locker room.

Calgary coach Bob Hartley said there was blood in Nakladal's eye, but wasn't any serious damage and he expects Nakladal to be available within a few days.

Predators defeat Avalanche to extend streak

Score four goals in third period, 12th game in row with point

DENVER -- The Nashville Predators scored four times in the third period to defeat the Colorado Avalanche 5-2 at Pepsi Center on Saturday, their 12th consecutive game without a regulation loss.

The Predators (33-21-12) are 8-0-4 since a 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Feb. 9.

"You sum it up in the third period when you're going out there, you just have to win a period," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. "Don't think about the scoreboard or if you're behind. If you can just win the period you can win the game, you'll get to overtime and get a point. Sometimes those (afternoon) games are hard to get into, but I thought our guys were sharp right from the start."

The Predators, who scored each of their first three goals after an Avalanche turnover, hold the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference. They are six points in front of the Minnesota Wild; each has 16 games left.

BUFFALO - The Minnesota Wild extended their win streak with their first shootout victory of the season Saturday.

Jason Pominville and Charlie Coyle scored in the shootout and Devan Dubnyk stopped three out of four shots to help the Wild to a 3-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center.

Dubnyk made 30 saves for Minnesota (31-25-10), which has won four in a row. Robin Lehner made 28 saves for Buffalo (26-31-9).

Pominville beat Lehner to the glove side in the fourth round of the shootout.

"At first I was kind of laughing at the boos, but then kind of got focused and actually looked a little bit at what [Coyle] did because he's a righty," Pominville said. "I like to see what righties do; I just kind of changed the angle and it was pretty much the exact same as when he went and I thought there would be room there and I was able to find a hole."

The Wild are 1-2 in shootouts and have won eight of their past 11 games since John Torchetti replaced former coach Mike Yeo on an interim basis.

WINNIPEG -- Cam Talbot made 39 saves and the Edmonton Oilers won for the fourth time in their past five games with a 2-1 victory against the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 at MTS Centre on Sunday.

Talbot has won his past four starts. He has a .979 save percentage over that stretch.

"The result of him being a wall back there, giving us an opportunity to scratch and claw for wins, has been pretty impressive," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "If we can keep him up and running and healthy, not only this [season] but moving forward, we feel we've got a really good one there."

Patrick Maroon and Lauri Korpikoski each had a goal for the Oilers (26-35-7), who finished their four-game road trip 3-1-0. In each of their past four wins, they have allowed no more than one goal.

Clutterbuck's late goal gets Islanders past Rangers

Move within three points of second place in Metropolitan Divison

Clutterbuck's late goal NYI@NYR: Clutterbuck breaks the tie late in the 3rd

3/6/1: Cal Clutterbuck beats Antti Raanta by shooting the puck over his right shoulder to break the tie and give the Islanders a late 5-4 lead

NEW YORK -- A wild first period featuring seven goals. A game-tying goal with less than 10 minutes remaining. A game-winning goal with 88 seconds left.

Yeah, a New York-New York first-round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs would be just fine.

It's on pace to happen, but who would have home-ice advantage? The New York Islanders put even more doubt into that Sunday with a 6-4 win at Madison Square Garden.

Right wing Cal Clutterbuck's goal off an offensive-zone faceoff win by center Casey Cizikas with 1:28 remaining in the third period was the difference. Frans Nielsen tacked on an empty-net goal for the Islanders, who are 3-0-0 against the Rangers this season and trail them by three points for second in the Metropolitan Division. The Islanders have three games in hand.

Allen's terrific glove save STL@MIN: Allen stretches for fantastic glove save

3/6/16: Jake Allen quickly gets across to make a terrific glove save to stone Jason Pominville, keeping the shutout intact in the 2nd

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Louis Blues goaltender Jake Allen was nine minutes away from his sixth shutout of the season.

Then the Minnesota Wild made things interesting.

Allen had 30 saves, and the Blues hung on for a 4-2 win against the Wild at Xcel Energy Center on Sunday.

Jori Lehtera, Ryan Reaves and Patrik Berglund scored to put St. Louis ahead 3-0 entering the third period before Minnesota mounted a rally and came within inches of tying the game. Robby Fabbri scored into an empty net with less than two minutes remaining to seal the Blues victory.

"We made a couple mistakes on their first goal, and then we made a coverage mistake on their second goal. And then all of a sudden the track meet is on," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We're not making it easy on ourselves. We're playing some real good hockey, and then we're making mistakes that are kind of what I call 'coaching moments' mistakes. We can correct those on Tuesday with video and move forward."

Malkin's second goal PIT@NJD: Malkin notches his second goal of the game

3/6/16: Evgeni Malkin collects the puck from a fallen defenseman for a breakaway, sending his shot into the net for his second goal of the game

NEWARK, N.J. -- Evgeni Malkin continued his torrid scoring pace since returning from injury with two goals and rookie goaltender Matthew Murray made 17 saves to help the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-1 victory against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Sunday.

Matt Cullen, Nick Bonino, Bryan Rust and Scott Wilson scored for the Penguins, who won for the fourth time in the past six games.

Pittsburgh (34-23-8), which leads the Devils by seven points for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference, play the second of a four-game road trip at the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

Malkin has been on a tear since returning to the lineup on Feb. 27 after missing 10 games because of a lower-body injury, scoring four goals and seven points in six games. He has 56 points in 55 games and is on pace to finish above the point-per-game mark for the ninth time in 10 seasons.

"It's always good to score because it gives you and the team that confidence to keep going, and this was a good rebound after losing on Saturday (against the Calgary Flames)," Malkin said.

OTTAWA -- Antoine Roussel scored with 2:14 left to give the Dallas Stars a 2-1 victory against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday.

Crawford's 33 saves help Blackhawks defeat Red Wings

Chicago pulls away from Detroit with two goals in third period

CHICAGO -- A strong puck-possession game helped the Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup three times in six years, but the defending champions are learning how to win without the puck this season.

The latest example was the Blackhawks' 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings at United Center on Sunday, when they were outshot 13-3 in the second period and 34-26 overall.

Chicago goalie Corey Crawford made 26 of 33 saves in second and third period, and the Blackhawks swept the season series against the Red Wings after winning 5-2 at Joe Louis Arena on Wednesday.

"In some of those [games] where we're maybe not firing on all cylinders, we're able to hang in there and give ourselves a chance in a shootout or overtime or at the end of a game," said Chicago captain Jonathan Toews, who scored the second of two Blackhawks goals in the third period to seal the win. "We can focus and take pride in hanging in there and just simplifying when maybe the other team is really throwing everything at us, and then see what happens. When we're able to counter, then things will go our way."

DENVER -- Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves, and Matt Duchene and Mikhail Grigorenko each had a goal and an assist to help the Colorado Avalanche defeat the Arizona Coyotes 3-1 at Pepsi Center on Monday.

Varlamov was strong from start to finish for his first win since Feb. 17 against the Montreal Canadiens. He hadn't played since being pulled after allowing three first-period goals six days ago in a 6-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

"I felt comfortable and confident," Varlamov said. "I knew it was really important to start this game strong and make a couple good saves because last game was a tough game for me against Minnesota. I've been waiting for this game and working really hard to prepare myself mentally and physically."

The Avalanche took a 2-0 lead into the third period on goals by Shawn Matthias and Duchene, but two of their three losses in the previous four games came after taking a lead into the third.

Reinhart's shootout winner BUF@TOR: Reinhart goes five-hole for shootout winner

3/7/16: Sam Reinhart sends the puck past a sprawling Garret Sparks in the shootout for the eventual game winner against the Maple Leafs

TORONTO -- Sam Reinhart set up the tying goal in the third period and scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Buffalo Sabres a 4-3 win over Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre on Monday.

In the shootout, Reinhart cruised in, lifted his stick over the puck causing Toronto goalie Garret Sparks to move forward exposing his five-hole. Reinhart slid the puck under his pads for the winner.

"That was my second career attempt and they both came in our last two games," Reinhart said. "I did the same thing against Minnesota (3-2 loss on Saturday) and I hit the post. I'm comfortable coming in that way."

Buffalo (27-31-9) overcame two two-goal deficits including a 3-1 deficit in the third period.
